Hi! Myself and my girlfriend are leaving for SA at the beginning of November and following pretty much the same route as you guys. It's been wicked to get first hand information abt what everythings actually like, you've given us sum great ideas and saved us sum time on skipping the bad places! Was shocked to read abt your crash, hope ur both ok. Will think twice before using a Bolivian bus! Thanks again for all the tips!

I see my original comment was a little pre-mature.. so that's what happened to the bus driver. Don't worry. I'm sure he'll be in a horrific crash and come off worse, although hopefully on his own. Some seriously scary stuff... but a gripping read. The prison sounds ace! I'm fascinated by prisons for some reason and I applaud your adventuring spirit! There is a prison here in a place called Sai Kung, you walk past the back of the wardens office during a hike to an amazing beach. You pass at a point where there are abandoned prison buildings all over the place and it's really creepy. The warden blasts classical music 24 hours a day to the prisoners through the speakers system and it is the most errie, lost esque craziness I've seen here. I took a video.... I'll stick it up soon! G..

Hello. I browse these blogs fairly often and had read a couple of yours previously, as I'm planning on a trip next year. I read the above and just wanted to say that I'm glad things ended ok - as in, no one was killed, as it sounds like an awful experience. Definitely one though that in years to come you will be able to silence a whole bar with by re-enacting! I was very pleased to hear you intend to carry on with the travels, as it would have been an awful way to end your trip. Hope you're both back 'on the road to recovery' soon ;) Nick

Love them! The cheaper the cachaça the better too. Sagatiba is the big brand name one you can get in the UK, but you can find Toucan for about 13 pounds an it's better. Plus has a picture of a toucan on it! My Brazillian friend, also called Camilla, gave me a bottle once. It was plastic and had a picture of a naked woman and a tiger on it. She said it was the stuff people in the jungle drink. It was the best stuff I've ever had! When you get back go to loft on Byres road and speak to one of the bartenders, Chris Grant. He's got very large spacer earrings and looks a bit emo. We've been bartending together for years and will make you the (2nd) best Caipirinha in Glasgow. Well, I suppose it's the first now that I've left. Tell him I sent you and get Dave to do his 'Get to the chopper' Arnie impression and you'll probably drink for free all night!
