My life for the past four years has been dedicated to teaching and traveling. After getting my teaching credential in California, I got my first teaching job in a middle school teaching English-Language Arts to 8th graders. Then I went to Gwangju, South Korea for a year and taught a hagwon. The whole year there was eye-opening and spectacular and made me want to travel even more. I came back to the states and moved to South Lake Tahoe, CA, where I enjoyed teaching 7/8 grade, skiing, and enjoying the pleasures of the lake. Now I'm living in Spokane, WA, but will be leaving to Manizales, Colombia in July to teach high school English for two years!!

My blogs are too infrequent to have a central theme, so here's a plethora of pictures of the past month or so. I know some of you back home wanted to see more pictures of exactly where I live, so I sort of cleaned the place up and shot a few. The rest just show the riot of buildings that touch the skies all around my apartment, which is only four floors high. Most of the apartments (there are no houses) are ten times taller than my place. I went upstairs to check if there was access to the roof, and I was in luck. Usually it's locked, but not today. The luscious green tree in one of the pics is my "backyard." Sadly, this is the first time I've ever seen it! As I strolled ... read more

Hello, goodbye, thank you and stop here! are the only Korean words I have learned in two months. I came here in June ready to master the alphabet in a week and move on to full sentences. Of course my arrogance bit me in the ass as I still only know four words/phrases. In fact, the lady at Paris Baugette, the best bread place I've found, enjoys laughing at me everytime I try new words. We have a love/hate relationship. So this blog is an array of topics and pictures, none of which relate, except that they are about South Korea. It's been a little over two months since I've been here. I remember arriving at the airport and feeling like my heart was going to explode because I finally followed through with traveling abroad. Immediatley ... read more

So last Wednesday was our going away party at Westfair (a local dive that is never busy, but has great drinks). The last four years in Bakersfield have been suprisingly interesting, and I have met some incredible people; however, everybody is now venturing in new directions, and it's about damn time. Recently Bakersfield was acknowledged in the newspaper for being "# 1 in Smog!" in the whole U.S....fabulous. I've read that the cities in S. Korea have horrible air, but I guess it will be just like home :) Stephanie and Staci, my burnette devil-angels (more devil than angel) are moving to the beautiful serenity of California's National Park. In the fall, they will be laying in sun filled, sandy beaches of Cali. Good luck ladies!! Even though my brother, Kevin, and I didn't get along ... read more

I will be leaving to Gwangju, S. Korea around June 12th, and I need advice on what essentials to bring and what I should leave behind. So far, I have gathered that deodorant, toothpaste, and other toiletries are very expensive there, and I should pack a year's supply...true? I've also been reading a lot of blogs that say the weather is very unstable...one day it's hot, the next day freezing. If I don't pack a lot of clothes, are there places that sell clothes at a decent price, or should I pack as much as possible? I don't have a lot of family here, so I am pretty much selling most of my things. I can get by with pretty little, but I also don't want to end up paying $20 for a simple product I ... read more
