So the adventure begins very early in the morning in Auckland as we catch the first flight to Christchurch. Well that is the plan anyway as we hear an announcement that says the flight is leaving but there is no guarantee that the plane will land as there is heavy fog at Christchurch airport. That would be an interesting way to start the holiday so I cross my fingers. Thankfully the flight is uneventful though I will highly recommend travelling with Air New Zealand as the service was fantastic and I had a yummy cupcake for breakfast. It was a half hour bus trip to our motel where we dumped our bags and headed into town to start our day. I am not sure if it was the weather but initial impressions of Christchurch were not ... read more

Having to work every weekend is turning into a trend so hubby and I decided that on Thursday we would go somewhere if the weather was nice...yes BEACH DAY!!! We had just recently been to the Cormonadel where hubby read up about Opoutere Beach. and it all sounded good so we decided to head there. It is a 2 hour drive from Auckland but that was not to defeat us. We had checked the weather forecast the night before so we were a bit dumbfounded as to why it was chucking it down with rain in the Coromandel while we were driving there. It was a bit disconcerting as well because we seemed to have left the sunshine back in Auckland. Anyway upon arrival at least the rain had stopped and the sun was attempting to ... read more

What a weekend!! Who would have thought it really as I had work both Saturday and Sunday mornings but managed to still find the time to celebrate some of Auckland's Anniversary celebrations. If you were ignorant like me it is yet another public holiday, the anniversary of the arrival of William Hobson. The New Zealand Government Gazette of 26 January, 1842 (Volume 2, 4th Edition) carried a notice stating "Saturday, the 29th instant, being the Second Anniversary of the establishment of the Colony, His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to direct that day to be held a General Holiday, on which occasion the Public Offices will be closed." On Saturday our destination was the Viaduct where the International Buskers Festival was being held. Even though we were late we did manage to see 3 performances ... read more

It's not all in the planning I am not often impromptu when it comes to planning trips but this turned out to be one of them. I had written Coromandel on our calendar from the beginning of January when I had gotten my list of shifts but that was as far as it went except for the occasional question of 'Are we going to the Coromandel?' which never really got answered. Suddenly it's Wednesday and I start talking out loud of what we can do on the weekend as I have just done a run of 8 shifts in a row and am looking forward to the time off! Hubby mentions the Coromandel and before I know it I am booking us into a hostel for two nights in Coromandel Town. I write up a quick ... read more

It's a sunny Sunday so it's time to head to the beach. I had actually written on our calendar "Day Out!!!" a few days back so we were doing something if it killed me. Yes the usual picnic was packed. We were only heading to West Auckland which meant less than an hours drive so that meant hubby could watch his football match in the morning first. Poor thing has been suffering actually as he has to get up early to watch his matches, he is and always will be a firm Inter Milan supporter! There are a few beaches in West Auckland that we want to check out and we decided on Bethell's Beach today. When we arrived at the carpark we were shocked to see that it was already full! Thankfully on arrival at ... read more

It is actually one of those days when we just did not happen to want to go the beach...OMG surprise yes it does happen! So I had heard from one of the girls at work that the botanic gardens were really beautiful and worth a visit. She has been fussy about a lot of things about being in New Zealand so I thought damn it must be good! So I said to hubby we have to find a day to go and this day was it. It was also not a very sunny day so we were not really missing a sunny day out at the beach anyway. I pack a blanket and our books just in case...in hindsight (don't you just hate hindsight, I mean you live and you learn right) I would not have ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Parnell January 11th 2010

So hubby decided that he would take me out to dinner for New Years and he was actually going to book the restaurant, I just had to help him choose. There were a few restaurants that we wanted to try but we decided in the end to stay local so the walk home would be relatively easy. Actually there are a few restaurant's in Parnell that we wanted to try and we chose Iguacu as they were doing a special menu with entertainment. We booked our table for 8.30. In the end they were fully booked so just as well. We were seated in the quieter side of the restaurant it appeared by staff all dressed up in different costumes. The idea was to vote on your favourite to enter the prize draw for some freebies. ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Waiheke Island January 11th 2010

So someone felt sorry for us being on our own for Christmas and hubby's colleague from work invited us to Waiheke Island for a day out! I love these days because again you get to go and do things that you probably would not do as just a tourist! Ferries at this time of year are pretty busy but thankfully they hold a lot more people than it looks. We were a bit worried at first as we were standing in a pretty long queue but it moved very quickly. Everyone was racing to sit upstairs or by a window and we were not so fussed and got ourselves a seat in the lower deck. The weather looked iffy in Auckland but I think that sun always seems to shine on Waiheke. What a difference being ... read more

Well it did not really feel like Christmas. We had no decorations in the flat as we knew we were only here for a year it was just too much of an expense and well we were happily spending the money elsewhere. Quite often with the type of work that I do I am working at Christmas time but now I had the Christmas free we were definitely not going to spend it stuck in our tiny flat on our own. Yes it would be a quiet Christmas with just hubby and I but it was going to be one to remember! When I finally managed to drag hubby to the supermarket it was the Christmas eve eve and we had just decided, well I decided that we would be cooking a turkey for Christmas Day. ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Islands » Russell January 11th 2010

So I have been trying for a bit to convince hubby that taking the Old Russell road home is really a good idea. He does the driving by the way so I understood that he was a bit tired of taking the long scenic routes. Thankfully at the B&B they said it would only add an extra 30minutes to the journey and he even recommended a place where we could stop along the way. Hubby=finally convinced! So after a satisfying lunch of yes you guessed it fish and chips and a cold beer off we head. The views were scenic and it was worth it! There are many places to stop along the way and every now and again hubby dutifully stopped for me to take a picture. Actually after a while it was me saying ... read more
