Boone and the Follower

Welcome!
My name is Andy Boone and I am hiking the Pacific Crest Trail with a good friend of mine Mosa Shayan. We are working our way from the Mexico/US boarder to the Canada/US boarder. There is about 2,600 miles of trail through the best mountains out west. We start in the middle of the desert and hike north 700 miles to the start of the Sierra Nevada. Then after 900 miles of the Sierra Nevadas we reach Oregon and the Cascade range that we follow up through Washington to Canada.

Washington here we come!

Well its been along time so it's hard to know where to start. First things first we are in central Oregon in the town of Bend and 1,960 miles into the trail. In northern California we had a great finish to the state. I was starting to wondered if the state would ever end but, it did just shy of 1,700. That is one big state. But we ended up hiking some of our most constant miles in northern California so it made the end pass by quickly. Once in the state of Oregon we felt like the trail was near complete although we still had about 900 miles to Canada. A couple of miles into Oregon we ran into a few hikers we knew. A man by the name of Billygoat, a 71 year old ... read more

Halfway Done

We finally reached the halfway mark a few days ago. The trail has been quite enjoyable since we got back on after our break in the bay area. It has been days since we have seen any snow, and the summer weather seems to have finally arrived. The good weather and clear trail have allowed us to put in 9 consecutive days of 30+ miles. We arrived at Old Station where Firewalker and Firefly resides on the 2nd. They have put us up and fed us incredibly well for the last day and a half. We will be leaving here today and anticipate we will be out of California and into Oregon in about 11 days. ... read more

Well after another long section with no internet available we have an opportunity to give you an update and upload some photos. Since Lake Isabella we have traveled over 500 miles bringing our grand total to about 1,2oo miles almost half way and out of California. The section we just finish was the hardest hiking of the trail. We encountered very high passes with more snow then we could ever imagine. We also had back luck with the weather, rain, sleet, or snow would blow in every afternoon and sometimes stick around all evening. There also was an issue of navigation due to the snow fields. There would be time when we would go hours without seeing the trail. This gave us many opportunities to get off trail and lost but we made it through and ... read more

It has been a long time since we left the Saufley's and last updated the blog. The day we reluctantly left the Saufleys, the trail led us to a water cache with a cooler full of soda, beer and water. The cache was set up by the Anderson family and came fully equipped with lawn chairs, shade, and delicious refreshments. There was also a note from the Anderson's encouraging hikers to stop by their house, and informing us they make taco salad and pancakes for all hikers who stay with them. This news resulted in a slight altercation of our plans: 23 miles after leaving the Saufleys, we were now going to stay with the Anderson's. After enjoying a beer and a couple sodas, we hauled ass for taco salads. Soon after arriving at the Andersons ... read more

The Saufley's

We have finally made it to the town of Agua Dulce and 455 miles complete. In this little town there is a couple whose house is known as Hiker Heaven and the name fits perfectly. We have a mobile home to stay in and each have our own rooms and a full kitchen. They also have a fleet of bikes to get around town. So this has been an amazing stay with The Saufleys and there huge family of dogs, cats, and horses. The next 180 miles of trail will be the hottest part of the trail. The only good part about this is that we are done with snow untill the high sierras. We also will be passing through part of the Mojave desert where the temperatures can climb into the hundreds. In these area ... read more

We are in the great town of Wrightood getting breakfast and resupply for our food bags. Again we had snow and hot weather to deal with. The second day after Big Bear Lake City we camped at a really nice hot spring. They had built small rock dams to create a perfect hot tube. So after a good day of hiking we soaked for while and felt as good as new. Once in town we went to breakfast had a great meal and some random guy we didn't even speak to bought our meal. So that as a nice way to start the day and feel welcome. We are now 370 miles into the trail now. That is well over half way through the desert and to my grampas house in Lake Isabella where we with ... read more

Well we had another great section last week. In this section we had some very different conditions. Once we left the town of Idllywild we entered a winter wonderland. The first 12 miles was solid snow drift. We both found the hiking fun but after a full day of breaking through the snow to your waist we were glad to be done. The next morning we just dropped down in the the low flats. These are the areas that the sun is just so hot. You just sweat so much but any little piece of shade feel so cool its amazing. We also put in a 32 mile day so we are starting to get our trail legs and that feels great. We are posting this blog from the town of Big Bear Lake City about ... read more

Well I am back on the trail again after four month's of working but a lot has changed. Adam moved to Berkeley to be with Anna. I decided to continue on with a good friend Mosa. So we are now on the pacific crest trail a route that extends from the California/Mexico boarder to the Washington/Canada boarder. We are both feeling great to be out on the trail. This is Mosa's first time doing long distance hiking but so far he is feeling great and glade to be out. He is learning some of the pains of long distance hiking and how to deal with them. There has been lots of other hikers out on the trail so that has been a lot of fun. We ran into a few hiker at a guys house right ... read more

Andy and I successfully completed the Appalachian Trail last weekend which brought our travels to an end for the year. We have now been home for a few days but laziness has prevented me from updating the blog in a timely fashion. When we last checked in we had just four days remaining on the trail. Those final days were difficult but with the southern terminus in sight, we pushed through the many miles of nasty weather. When we finished Mother and Abby were waiting in the state park after coming all the way from Iowa to pick us up, they are so kind. Now that we are home there is no more rushing around, no more miles to cover. As much as Andy and I enjoy racking up the miles, we are happy to slow ... read more

For whatever reason, Andy and I really enjoy getting ourselves into a big push to finish whatever trail we are traveling. And this hike is no exception as we left Damascus with 461 miles remaining on the Appalachian Trail. When we last checked in we had just completed the first day of our two week summit push. It was rainy but the trail was free of snow and we felt confident that our hike would be enjoyable. The next morning we awoke to freezing precipitation that we hoped would pass. Sadly it did not pass and we hiked in deep, fresh snow for two days. These bitterly cold, snowy days nearly delivered the deathblow to our summit push. We were beaten down and wanted nothing more than to go home. Then after our third morning of ... read more
