Until the 2014 Bixby History Trip!

After some much needed rest, I am finally getting to the final two days of our incredible trip. As usual, there is a lot to get to, so here we go! Day 7 began with the usual breakfast at our DC hotel. We had a typical departure time of 8:15 and headed into the city. There was a tropical storm that made its way into DC on Friday, but we pushed through and managed to have a great day. It was yet another way that our kiddos showed just how awesome they are! They never complained, had fun, and made the best of the day! Our first stop for the day was the Capitol Visitors Center. As we drove into the city, our tour guides impressed upon us the significance of the Capitol as the center ... read more

Due to some technical difficulties, our day 6 exploits are coming a bit late. It was another full day that began with breakfast at our DC hotel which consisted of the usual eggs, potatoes, fruit, yogurt, cereal, etc. There was lots of food and we would definitely need the energy! We departed the hotel at about 8:15 and headed for Mount Vernon, home of our first president, George Washington. It is still a working farm as well as a living monument and museum to one of our greatest founding fathers. We had some free time to explore the property when we arrived. Many visited the tomb of George and Martha Washington as well as many of their family members. There were several out buildings to explore as well, including those for: laundry, slave quarters, a kitchen, ... read more

Today was a whirlwind! We departed New Jersey and then drove through Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia! We began the day by saying goodbye to our New Jersey hotel and its delicious omelette bar. We hit the road for Philadelphia a little before 9. We were on the road for a few hours and refreshed our history by watching National Treasure :) Our first stop in Philadelphia was a great little restaurant and market area called Reading Terminal. Several of us enjoyed an authentic Philly Cheesesteak, which of course includes cheez-whiz! Pennsylvania is also home to a large Amish community, so lots of us enjoyed some delicious whoopie pies, cakes, and cookies! They were incredible! After lunch we headed to Independence Hall which is where the Declaration of Independence was signed and the Constitution ... read more

North America » United States » New York » New York June 5th 2013

Day four was incredibly full, so in lieu of a clever opener, I'm going to get right into it! We had a later start than normal because we got home so late after the Broadway show. The day began with a wonderful breakfast! Options included cereal, bagels, fresh fruit, and pastries. We even had an omelette bar! Needless to say, breakfast was a hit! As we drove into the city, Danielle and Donna pointed out several highlights, including the Meadowlands, home of the Giants and Jets. Our first official stop of the day was a cruise on the Hudson River. It ran a bit longer than scheduled, but we had an incredible view of Jersey City, NJ and New York. Our tour guide on the ship pointed out several highlights, including: One World Trade Center; Empire ... read more

North America June 3rd 2013

We are at the end of a very long day 3 and it was a great one! We began the day with a quick but filling breakfast at our hotel, got our luggage, and said goodbye to our Boston hotel. We hit the road at 8, thinking it would take about 3-4 hours to get to New York. About 5.5-6 hours later, we arrived! We ran into unexpected traffic in Boston, Connecticut, and at one point in New York, the entire highway shut down to tow a trash truck. Our lucky streak continues! Once we got into town, we got a very quick bite to eat. Our options included pizza, steak sandwiches, hot dog vendors, and a panini shop. It was very quick, but much needed! Our first big agenda item in New York was the ... read more

North America June 3rd 2013

Hello Spartans, family, and friends! It's been an exciting couple of days to say the least and there's a lot to cover, so I'm just going to get right into it! First I'd like to extend a huge thank you to all of the parents, chaperones, and students for making our departure run so smoothly. It went better than we planned it and it is because all of you did such an outstanding job of being prepared and on time. We can't thank you enough! Checking in and security were a breeze. Once we got to the gate, we had a few minutes to get breakfast before boarding the plane. We were delayed by about 20 minutes due to weather, but it wasn't too bad. The main group that went through Atlanta had some extra air ... read more
