So, some overall thought about the zoo: I really liked Micropia (a microbe exhibit). I loved the interactive bits too and there is a lot to look at. It's a completely different concept to any exhibits I have seen or even heard of before. Do any other zoos have anything like it? I wasn't sure what to expect really before going to it but it exceeded my expectations and I was very impressed despite the fact that there were no animals apart from a small fish tank and some ants. A very cool exhibit. In terms of the zoo overall. For the most part, what they have is done well I thought. The standard of the enclosures was good overall with notable exceptions being the lion and elephant exhibits which were awful and some rather small ... read more

I visited Weltvogelpark Walsrode on Thursday the 9th of July for the full day and for a few hours on the next morning as a stopping point whilst driving from Warsaw, Poland to the UK (where I will be for the next month before driving back again). I had very high expectations for Weltvogelpark Walsrode, largely based on the species list from Zootierliste and it didn’t disappoint at all. Weltvogelpark Walsrode is my favourite zoo that I have been to so far. Of course, the collection is very specialised, birds, birds and another helping of birds is all you will see there but what fantastic birds they are. The collection has a fantastic selection of rarities and I saw close to 200 bird species that I had never seen before (over 200 with the different subspecies ... read more

There is already a lot of information about Tierpark Berlin on line so I’ll just give my thoughts and opinions here. Overall, I liked it. Of course there are sub-standard bits, namely some of the enclosures in the Alfred-Brehm Haus and the sun bear enclosures – which are awful, but there are lots of good bits too. I liked the highland area because of the layout and the range of species and I thought the crocodile house was very well done. The vulture aviary and the gull aviary were really good too. There were lots of very nice birds in the pheasantry and I would have loved more time than I had to watch them. The free-roaming pelicans were another nice feature, as was the huge open area with camel paddocks, the nice wooded enclosures with ... read more

Poznan Stare Zoo is the far smaller and inferior of Poznan’s two zoos. Though Stare Zoo wasn’t all bad and nothing was really terrible, just not that impressive with rather too many domestics for my liking. The Stare zoo is a very old zoo and I believe the oldest continuously operating zoo in Poland and was Poznan’s main zoo before the tiny size of the facility necessitated a larger zoo to be built though they are both under the same management. As a result the zoo has a lot of history associated with it including former exhibits that would be considered unsuitable for the species that they were originally intended for but they have since been re-purposed for other species. The entrance to the zoo is free and I believe it is officially a public park ... read more

I visited Poznan Nowe Zoo yesterday (6th June 2015) and I spent the whole day from open to close there and I really enjoyed myself. The Zoo is just outside the city the zoo grounds is very large, according to Wikipedia 117 hectares but most of this is not developed into exhibits with areas of natural woodland and several very large lakes. The collection of species is very extensive in terms of mammals and gallinaceous birds and birds of prey but is lacking on other things (herps, fish and some birds were in the Stare Zoo which is run by the same group and I will post about that zoo - which I visited the next morning - separately). The nocturnal house is extremely extensive with a large range of species (including three species of bats). ... read more

Wroclaw Zoo is a zoo located in the City of Wroclaw in Southern Poland. The Zoo is a very large zoo and has recently undergone lots of development projects such as the Afrykarium. I really liked this zoo and if you count Afrykarium as one single exhibit than it is the best one I have ever seen. - As I just wrote, the Afrykarium is fantastic and is the best single exhibit I have ever seen. The building is huge and grand on the outside and inside including two fantastic pools for a fair sized group of cape fur seals and a huge group of African penguins (sharing with cape shelducks) but make their enclosures seem empty. There are lots of big tanks with freshwater and saltwater fish including a huge tank for sharks, rays, a ... read more

Dvur Kralove Zoo is situated just outside the small town of Dvur Kralove nad Labem in Northern Czech Republic. I stayed in the hotel that is in the zoo which I would recommend since it allows free access to the zoo after opening times. This was helpful for seeing some of the more elusive animals (though even with multiple visits, I missed the African Civet, seen it before in the wild anyway) though the indoor areas couldn’t be accessed after closing time. The main reason I visited the zoo was to see one of the last Northern White Rhinos. This is I’m sure the main thing that this zoo is famous for and I really had no idea what else there was, but there is a lot more nice stuff besides the rhinos. - The zoo ... read more

I’m just going to talk about what I liked, didn’t like and general opinions here. - I thought that the best bit of the zoo was Magic mountain/great rock. This is a sort of mock-rock mountain and the exhibits are on the inside. You come in past the exhibits for gorillas and orangs and go through a corridor with signs about evolution and species going extinct. These signs were almost all in Hungarian (not a complaint, I was in Hungary so it is only to be expected. After all, no zoos in the UK have their signage in Hungarian) so my appreciation of it was limited but I could get the general gist of what they said from pictures. The place was a sort of hybrid between a natural history museum and a small animals house. ... read more

Tiergarten Schonbrunn is a zoo located in Schonbrunn Park in Vienna, Austria. It was founded as a menagerie for royalty hence it is an old zoo. I really, really liked this zoo. There were no sub-standard enclosures and many excellent ones with the ABC animals along with many incredible rarities. I will be going through this zoo in the same way that I did Budapest Zoo with bullet point notes saying my opinions of it. - The setting and surroundings of the zoo were very nice. It is within a park so the area around it is very nice and well landscaped. Within the zoo there is a fairly large forest area with a suspended pathway through the trees with views over the whole zoo and large areas of the city of Vienna. There are also ... read more

Today, I did Ostrava Zoo. I will not be doing an exhibit by exhibit 50 million word review but I will be generally discussing the zoo – the good points, bad points and my general opinions. Ostrava Zoo is located in Ostrava (obviously) which is a city in the Czech Republic and fairly near to the Polish border. I’m going to be honest here and say that Ostrava is really quite a depressing city, it is an industrial city and the skyline is covered with the towers of factories, some are shut-down and rusting and some are still bellowing smoke. There used to be lots of coal mining going on around the city (though this has stopped now, I believe completely) and as a result there are lots of huge slag heaps and old railways for ... read more
