We have seen this display a number of times and always thought it was a repair shop owned by a man with an artistic bent. Yesterday we were nearby and decided to visit and take photographs of the artwork. As we neared the building we realized that this was no repair shop, it was a restaurant. So we snapped photos and shared a pizza. Hmmm, good. ... read more

Spring has come to the Sarka Valley. I went out early in the morning to take a few photos of blossoms. Looking out from the hill behind where our apartment is located I saw the beautiful sight of the Sarka Valley filled with the colors of spring. ... read more

If you visit Vienna be sure to tour the Treasury Chamber or the Schatzkammer. It really is much more than a chamber. The word chamber gives the idea of one room, but there are numerous rooms on the tour and surely you will find many of interest. While we enjoyed seeing the silver and the gold and the jewels we came away most impressed by the tapestry work in the final room. Tapestry Tapestries we have seen in other museum always have been hung on walls. This give a good view of the entire tapestry, but not of the needlework. In this museum tapestries are both on walls and in cases so that you can get really views close-up. The ones that we could get close to gave us views of the needlework that really 'knocked ... read more

Such a contrast There are so many ancient sites to see in Valencia and throughout Spain that many travelers miss or ignore one of the most beautiful complexes to be seen anywhere. The City of Arts and Sciences (Valencian: Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, Spanish: Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias) is a marvel of modern architecture. We were not sure we would be able to visit this complex of buildings. It was not close to the historic district where our hotel was located. One of the desk clerks told us which bus to catch. We decided to be brave and head out in a bus we knew nothing about for a destination which was 'somewhere' in this enormous city. After all, if it did not go where we wanted to go or ... read more

Buildings on our campus and their link to a tragic event in an evil era A number of buildings here date back to the 1700s. So it is not surprising there have been good eras and dark eras of sadness and tragedy. One of the darkest periods was WW II when these buildings were the headquarters of the GESTAPO. There is no question some very bad things happened. The events following the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the head of the GESTAPO in this region, can only be viewed as bad. An Evil Man Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich (7 March 1904 – 4 June 1942) is remembered as the Butcher of Prague. It could be said he was the butcher of the entire Czech nation and was instrumental in the deportation of Jews, Gypsies and others to ... read more

The outside of the Casa Batllo is as fantastic as the inside of the house. Curves instead of straight lines. Fabulous mosaics instead of brick, blocks or shingles. Colors everywhere mixed and matched dancing and almost singing. This house looks like something you might imagine in a dream. We read a note saying that "Materials from the region that were easily affordable were used throughout the house showing you can have something magical without importing foreign materials and without 'breaking the bank". But it is perfectly obvious you must have a genius designing the use of the materials and artists of the highest skill to turn these designs into reality. There is a perfect combination in this house of materials, designer and artists capable of making a dream come true. How wonderful it would be if ... read more

I am sure we did not see nearly all of the statues in Barcelona, but we did see many and took photos of a fair number of the ones we saw. I always find it amazing that a person can take a piece of stone and create a beautiful statue out of it. My hat is off to sculptors. You need to page or scroll down in order to see all the statues.... read more

Long walk The hotel desk clerk was circling interesting places to visit on a Valencia city map. He drew a circle and said, "The Sagrada Familia is very interesting. You will have to take city transportation. It is too far to walk." He was wrong. We walked, not only to the Sagrada Familia but also to a number of other spots during the day. By evening we guessed that we had walked seven or eight miles ... perhaps more. We were tired, but happy at what we had seen and we had no problems going to sleep. Still under construction Though construction on the Sagrada Familia began in 1882 it is still under construction. The projected completion date is 2026. A person could spend most of their adult work life employed on this one project. Antoni ... read more

Happy Birthday Bill Today was Bills' 71st birthday. He says, "At this age I am always happy to see another birthday. Think of the alternative." Five of the last six birthdays Bill has celebrated his birthday outside the US; four times in Prague and once in Costa Rica. All-in-all he has been outside the country for either 9 or 10 birthdays. He was in Germany two of his birthdays when he was in the Army. He was in Brazil when he turned 30. He may have been in Brazil on another birthday but we cannot remember for sure. We bought a birthday cake earlier this week and shared it with others at IBTS during the Friday morning coffee break. Anyone on campus is welcome to go to the coffee room for a free cup of coffee, ... read more
