Hello everyone, Today I am writing this entry on a very packed bus, and am trying really hard not to be a pain in the ass and take up loads of space writing on the tablet and keyboard in such close quarters. I am on a 6 hour bus ride to Vienna, and I am feeling every painful second of it – my body is used to walking and being in the great wide open, not in narrow spaces. Anyway, today’s entry is about both Munich and Bavaria, as yesterday was spent in the beautiful rural areas of Bavaria. We arrived in Munich a few days ago. I am finding it really difficult to remember one day from the next, calendar wise lately, so I am gonna maybe get things wrong, but I’ll try my best. ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague July 17th 2017

Good evening from Munich! My sincerest apologies that my entries are a tad delayed, but finding down time has been difficult on this trip - I'm normally on the go from early til late, and just feel like collapsing in a heap in the hotel room at the end of each day. However, I have started this blog with the intention of actually keeping up with it, so enjoy the musings of a knackered Kiwi haha. I've always wanted to visit Prague after seeing a photo of the Charles Bridge. That bridge seemed to a younger me to be the equivalent of the magical bridge as seen in the Thor movies (if you haven't seen that film, it is basically a fancy space bridge that sparkles and is really colourful and pretty). I was also keen ... read more

Dresden Ah, where to begin with this gem of a city! I realize this isn’t your typical call to mind place to travel to within Germany, but I was insistent upon coming to this city which is laden with history and filled with architecture of a scale which I found difficult to fathom. Interestingly, Dresden was nearly bombed to the ground during World War 2. The crown jewel of the city, the Frauenkirche, was nearly entirely decimated, but was rebuilt during the 90s. Upon entering Dresden and checking into the hotel right in the heart of the Altstadt (or Old Town), we proceeded to walk towards the eye candy, and by eye candy I meant the buildings and not men. Although, there were some rather good looking Germans around to be fair. We walked past the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin July 12th 2017

Hello one and all. So, I had previously written text for this entry, but somehow, as only I can do in all my glorious technical inability, managed to delete it all. I am now left with a blank slate - or Tabula Rasa, as Jean Jacques-Rosseau so eloquently put it, ready to spew some verbal vomit for you all to read. My memory is pretty unreliable at best, so let's see if I can remember all the frolicking gallivanting I did in this wondrous city! My first impressions of Berlin were initially: What a cool fucking TV Tower (excuse the crudeness, but I'm just being honest), as I was coming in on the train to Berlin. My second impressions were: Woohoo, the hotel is so close to the U-Bahn (Train). My friend and I arrived at ... read more

I am still on the train, and am going to attempt to bust out another entry for this rather nifty city. I must say in terms of the actual city, I wasn’t overly impressed by the majority of the architecture, most of it seems like many other generic cities, albeit with some old and impressive buildings interspersed with more modern buildings. My primary motivations for visiting this place were to see an old friend of mine, and of course to see the Cologne Cathedral. My kiwi friend, Erin had moved over to Germany with her German boyfriend of whom she’d met while she was living in New Zealand, and whilst he was travelling within New Zealand. She’s spent about 6 or so months living in a town called Euskirchen, not too far from Cologne. She has ... read more

MISSING July 12th 2017

It feels like a game of catch-up trying to write these blog entries. I am currently on the two hour train to Dresden from Berlin. I am also trying to write this entry on a tablet with a wireless German keyboard which sure is making this an interesting exercise. So, Brussels... Aside from London, this was the first big city I’ve encountered on this journey so far. Stepping out of the station and onto the city streets was quite a surreal experience. I couldn’t help but drink in the new sights and smells. Every street seemed to harbour new sensory delights. I experienced my first ‘wow’ moment upon entering Grand Place. I’d seen many nice photos of this particular square, but they didn’t quite prepare me for what I was to encounter. The buildings amassed around ... read more

Today's first full day of London included firstly, a massive sleep-in. Upon awakening, my family took me into London Central to see a show called Stomp which had been playing in theatres for years. I was amazed at the longevity of plays in London, various shows have played for years. Travelling on the train from Hampton through to Waterloo was quite interesting. Walking through Waterloo onto the main concourse area, I was overwhelmed by the sheer mass of humanity. Coming from little 'ole Katikati, this was indeed a culture shock. We took a few tube lines also which was rather an interesting (read: claustrophic experience). The efficiency of public transport there is awesome. I could find my way around easily with the signage and guides. The walk to the show included walking over several iconic bridges, ... read more

Europe July 5th 2017

Hi all, Finally have gotten around to updating my blog, courtesy of my friend's laptop in Euskirchen in Germany. I am going to pop in the blog entries I have written in my physical diary to cover up until this point. I feel as though I need to write about the horrendously long flight from New Zealand to Heathrow Airport London. I've always enjoyed the notion of flying and seeing all the massive airports . The uncertainty of what to do at the big airports was somewhat daunting, however. I must say that I went through almost painlessly..except for the security (second security check might I add!) at Dubai Airport. Upon alighting in Dubai, I was first struck by the blanket of humidity that hung over the place like an oppressive pall. Getting out of the ... read more
