Hi all, The teaching here is going well. The school I teach at is called Anna Mkapa Secondary and is about a 40 minute walk from the house. It's in a run down area of Moshi, and I regularly get swarmed by kids on the way who are forever shouting "Muzungu" (White person) and "good morning" to me, even if it is the afternoon. The school didn't have a physics teacher so thats where I fit in. I teach 4 classes in total, and about 13 lessons per week the largest having 87 pupils and the smallest 67. Teaching is made diffiult due to the fact there are no resources avaliable (meaning practicals are out of the question), the communication barrier (they speak Ok english but don't understand a lot of Science terms and its difficult to ... read more

Hi all, Had a 4 day weekend last weekend due to easter, so me Rou, and Jesse decided to do some traveling and headed down to Pangani and Tanga. We bought our tickets for the Simba Video Coach (despite its name did not have a tv on board) on thursday and left on friday. The trip down to Tanga took about 6 hours and the coach was packed, every seat taken and every space in the isle too. From Tanga we took a Dala dala (mini bus) down to Pangani, which again had no room spare, I counted 14 actual seats and there must have been at least 20 on that bus! (luckily I managed to hold on to my seat for the 2hour trip). We got to Pangani around 7pm and found a place to ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » North » Serengeti National Park April 1st 2009

Hi all, Last Fri to Mon I went on Safari. I went with the group I arrived with and we decided to go sooner rather than later to avoid the rains. All in all, we visited 3 national parks, the Serengeti, Nogorogoro Crater and Lake Manyara. We also stopped off at a Massai village on the way. There were 5 of us, a tour guide/driver (Ben) and a cook/spotter (Ottman). The Massai village was amazing, got to shake hands with the chief (who has over 30 wives and 124 children) and look around their huts. When we arrived we told most of the Massai warriors from the village were out hunting a lion that had just killed one of their calfs! It wasn't a totally traditional village (as was apparent by the Massai on the motorbike ... read more

Hi, Just managed to find an internet cafe in Moshi. The flight over was good, watched Quantum of Solace, but didn't manage to get any sleep!. The flight from Nairobi had really good views of Kilimanjaro and we landed right next to it. I was greeted at the airport by Venseculus, who works for i-to-i. The taxi from the airport to Moshi was pretty crazy to say the least, big culture shock. Cattle and donkeys in the road, Massai all over the place, women carrying baskets of bannanas on their heads and mud huts! I knew what to expect but actually being there is completely different. The volunteer house where I'm staying is nice, has a big balcony and chill out spot outside, satalite tv and the food is delicious. Just got back from the school ... read more
