"Here you have a man I learned about in school," said CJ, my 13-year-old London tour guide, as he pointed to a tall statue. "I don't remember what he did, but it's really important." A few minutes later my guide excused himself while he joined the other kids in Trafalgar Square to climb one of the lion sculptures that flank the statue. Wikipedia tells me this is known as Nelson's Column, which is in honor of "Admiral Horatio Nelson, who died at the Battle of Trafalgarin 1805." After conquering the bronze lion, CJ pointed out the corners we would be visiting. Way off to the left would be the London Eye and Big Ben, to the right was the National Gallery, and straight ahead (okay not really straight, but close enough) led to Buckingham Palace "where ... read more

So far our only mistake in planning this trip is that we didn't allow enough time for a stay at the Ring of Kerry, basically a route that goes around a bay. It's more than that though because you go through a variety of cinderella-like villages (all with their own distinct personality), through farms on steep hills (sheep can climb!), and mountain passes with views of emerald, blue and black crystal lakes. If we get the chance to come here again, we'll book two nights in the area so that we can take advantage of the hiking trails and local pubs. We fed stalks of grass to horses, ate sandwiches on a pebbly beach, crawled through a crumbling castle near a mud bog, and ohhhhed and aaahhhhed at breath-taking mountain vistas, some of which looked down ... read more

Every one is still sleeping. Birds are tweeting, Joe is snoring and the occasional truck or tractor rattles by on the road out front. In a few minutes I'll wake them all up because today we're going to the Ring of Kerry. We picked this day because it's supposed to be warm and sunny. Yesterday was one of my favorite days on this trip. Ericka and Tracy went to Ennis and a castle somewhere near Shannon (and got caught behind a fox hunt!). Joe, Kaylene, Kelly and I decided to stay closer to the cottage and hike around Ballina and Killaloe, two ancient towns (is there any other kind in Ireland?) divided by the Shannon River. I'm in love with these two towns. If I were to ever be able to move here, this is where ... read more

I'm sitting on a maroon, velvet victorian-era chair in the corner of the loft that overlooks our kitchen. When I look straight ahead I see an old spinning wheel, black wood beams and a bit of stone wall. The room is lit by daylight that comes through several sky lights. Lumpy chaise lounges woo me for a nap, but I just got up so they will have to wait. We've been here a few days now, but I've lost track of time. I think it's Wednesday, but who knows? who cares? I could live here forever. We're in rural Ireland near Lough Derg and the River Shannon. Yellow roses frame our front door, daisies and buttercups lace the hills behind us and mules and chickens greet us in the morning. In the distance cows are calving ... read more

Yesterday, we pulled into Kinsale, a brightly colored harbor village packed with fairy tale cottages, cobblestone allies, flower beds, stain glass windows and, of course, pubs and a steeple. It's where the Irish go when the sun graces them on a weekend, and they want to live their own version of a fable. Prior to Kinsale we embarked on a harrowing journey, which was our Ford Focus equivalent of sailing the high seas to unknown lands. Imagine being on a tiny road that looks barely big enough to be a one-way street, midway through it you realize a tour bus is coming right at you. Now, you have stone walls and parked cars on both sides. The bus keeps coming, and you can't back up because there are cars behind you. What do you do? Well, ... read more

Note: it's really hard to find wifi. Will post pics later. Just in case you didn't know, the Titanic was built in Belfast and just a few months ago the city opened a tribute to its workers and passengers. What we didn't know is that it took them 100 years to do this because the city was in mourning. Its people took every death personally. You see it seems the people here take tremendous pride in their work --- whether it's herding sheep to riveting the hull of a ship to being the lord mayor. The successes and failures are a collective thing. There's plenty of debate over whose to blame for this and that, but when something goes wrong or right it's everyone's bit to own. We were so incredibly lucky to be able to ... read more

You read about how green the "emerald isle" is, and you read about the rain and the friendly, accommodating people, and the pubs, and all that good stuff. But you fully don't know what any of that is until you experience it. We've done so much in the past few days --- all of which deserves its own blog entry --- and I wish I took the time to write about it all, but, well, you know I'm having way too much fun doing the holiday thing. So, here's a run down of it all: Day Two: Book of Kells, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Guinness Storehouse and Temple Bar area. Awesome, awesome and awesome. Both mornings in Dublin were spent sipping lattes on a busy cafe corner. Do you have any idea how cool it is to ... read more

Oh the joys of traveling long distances. We made it all the way to Dublin without any airport drama, and then kabam. Long story short Kelly's flights got a little screwed up, so he was switched to a whole different airline that landed in a different terminal without any way of communicating with us. You see apparently they can't just look stuff up at the Dublin airport and let us know what flight a passenger is changed to. Sooooooooooo, Kaylene and Joe stayed at the airport for HOURS until they all managed to find each other and make their way to the hotel, so all turned out okay. Ericka, Tracy and I went to our hotel, and after a little power nap, we went for a stroll to buy some soda and three or four hours ... read more

In case you haven't heard, we've been planning an awesome trip to Ireland. Forgive this boring entry, but I'm testing out the old blog to make sure it works. I've also discovered that it's tough to post via my iPad, so I'm testing to see if I can start it here and then add to it from iPad. okay, here goes...... read more

During Halloween weekend I learned that bats can brag that sun shines out their butts. Well, sort of. You see when they leave their caves to feed on our plants and cacti blossoms they bring back the sun's goodness to their dark, dank caves. While hanging out and chattering with their thousands of neighbors, they spackle the cave with guano (bat dung, I guess it has its own special name because it plays a major role in the life of a cave and its critters). The guano contains enough of the sun to nourish those that feed on it, including microscopic plant life. For those of you who don't know, about this time every year my exhusband spends a week in my house. Long story short it means a lot to our sons, but quite frankly ... read more
