Well everyone...that time has come, I will be home in 5 days! It is unbelievable how quickly my time here in South Africa has flown by, I never imagined a semester could go by in the blink of an eye. So, here it is - - one last blog entry to summarize my last few weeks, and some pictures to share. Since I wrote last our group had settled down for finals and last minute projects. I wrote 3 final exams, and had many-a-paper to deliver. I took my last exam this past friday and am now home free for the next week. Besides finals, Natalie's best friend from school who is studying abroad in Florence this semester came to Stellenbosch for her spring break for a week, so we had a great excuse to do ... read more

Hellloo again! I cannot believe how fast the month of September flew by! In just three days I will have completed my 14th week here, and only have 5 left - - the time has just flown by so incredibly fast. I will try and re-cap the past few weeks for you, which for once will be easy because it has been fairly uneventful in terms of extravagant excursions go. As soon as we got home from spring break we got swept into 2 straight weeks of birthday frenzy. Lex had her 21st the Monday upon our return, the twins had theirs the following weekend, and in-between those 4 of our South African friends had birthdays! All of these celebrations could not have come at a better time. Coming home from our crazy spring break, it ... read more

Hello again everyone! I have just arrived back in Stellenbosch after an absolutely incredible 10 days! It was our mid-semester break this past week and this will just be a brief blog to show you some photos of my adventures, as well as tell you about the ones that no camera's were allowed on. We left early Friday morning, our form of transportation for the week being a hop-on-hop-off bus, and headed off on our journey across the Southern coast of SA along the Garden Route. Our first stop was Wilderness, about a 4.5 hour drive from Bosch. We went to Wilderness for two reasons: 1-Beautiful beaches 2-I have a friend that I met in Res who lives in Wilderness, and suggested we stop So, we arrive..our backpackers lodge was amazing; it was positioned right over ... read more

September 1st 2009

Well hello again everyone! In true South African tradition, I am sitting here drinking a nice hot glass of Roobios Tea. It is..well, one in the morning now I guess, and I would estimate that 75% of this residence hall just made some tea to perk them up for the long night of studying ahead. It is mid-term week here at Stellenbosch University, or "writing week" as they call it. Almost all student have 5 days in a row of tests at 8am. It is run much like finals week at home would be. Besides that, here is the update on my past two weeks: First, just a little description of the first picture in this entry. That is the view, out one of the windows that lines the classroom (skatkarmer) in my Afrikaans class. It ... read more

Hi everyonee! I am sorry that it has taken me this long to update my blog, but I was waiting until I had some more interesting experiences to share with all of you! If I remember correctly, I had just started classes during my last blog, and was learning how to sookie. Since then, classes have started to pick up and the work is coming in quicker then I would like, but I need to remember that I am actually going to school while I am here in Stellenbosch. I wrote my first paper this past week on the underdevelopment in Africa and South Africa. We had to argue what we thought was the root cause of the under-developmental problem that the African continent is facing today is. I traced my paper back to the slave ... read more

Hellooo family and frienddss, I have officially been in South Africa for three and a half full weeks! It is absolutely amazing how fast the time has flown by! These past two weeks have not been nearly as exciting from a "blog worthy" perspective, but it is time for an update non-the-less. I started classes last Monday, July 20th, which I probably mentioned in my last blog so things have slowed down a bit since then. My semester course load consists of 4 IPSU classes, which are courses taught in English for the 200+ international students that are on class, and 1 mainstream course which is taught in part Afrikaans, part English. My classes are: -South Africa and the Literary Imagination (English Elective dealing with short stories written by black vs. white writers during the apartheid ... read more

Hello Everyonee!! I am officially in SA! I arrived in Cape Town on Monday, July 13th after 2 days of travel. On July 12th, I had a 10 hour lay-over in London and our friends the Robinson's were kind enough to pick me up for the afternoon and take me around London. We spent a nice afternoon in the city and I got to see Big Ben, Parliament, Trafalgar Square and the London Eye. It was a great way to start this adventure. If you are reading this, thank you so much Jim, Judy, Casey and Will for a great day - - you sure made my journey here much easier! Also, if you see your neighbor tell him that we will be spending the last weekend in August at Overberg within De Hoop Nature Reserve ... read more
