Its been a month, almost two actually, since I returned from Ethiopia and I've been avoiding writing a final entry as much as possible. I think I realized why I didn't want to write it (this also reflects my lack of a closure from my Italy blog)...I don't really want to accept that this wonderful, amazing experience I just had is over. I'm not in Ethiopia anymore, I don't get to see those awesome kids every day and it makes me sad. I cannot even begin to hope I made a smidgen of a difference in the lives of any of the kids I worked with at Onesimus, but they made an enormous difference in mine. I hope I can continue to be in contact with the organization and help them in any way that I ... read more

Selamnachu! This week, I want to tell you a little about what typically goes on daily at Onesimus. Everyday is truly an adventure, even though we do have a schedule, you never know what is going to happen. The majority of my time at Onesimus is spent with the drop-in center boys, the boys who are still sleeping on the streets at nighttime but come to the center Monday through Friday from about 8am to 3pm. I think of these boys, Amanuel, Befekadu, Besufekad, Endaweke, Abebe, Adonias, Yidenacachew and Esrael as my boys because I’ve spent so much time with them and have gotten to know them so well. Before Onesimus had any foreign volunteers, which is pretty much up until this January, the staff each had their own scheduled activities with the drop-in center kids; ... read more

Sopa! (Masaai for Hello) Last weekend I went to Nairobi for five days and spent three of those on a safari to the Masaai Mara. When I heard about the opportunity, I had to take it; I mean really, how often in your life are you going to get to go on a safari inAfrica. Honestly I was not excited about going to Nairobi. I had heard nothing positive from others who had been already and with a nickname like “Nairobbery” you would definitely be more wary of visiting. I was pleasantly surprised with what I found when I visited Nairobi. It was a very clean, colorful and western city. Although I did not spend much time in the city, all the Kenyan’s I met while on my trip were truly fantastic and really changed my ... read more

Selamnachu y’all, I have a new name to add to the list of alternatives the boys at the drop-in center call me; Alyska! I think this one might be the most creative yet. The boy who solely refers to me by this name, finally corrected my pronunciation of his name this week, just a little one letter difference. I found it wholly entertaining as it would be futile for me to even attempt to correct the boys after they’ve become so creative with the various manifestations of my name since I arrived. I feel like in the time I have been working with Onesimus there is now a regularly attending group of about 10 boys and most of them have really started to adapt and behave. To these boys who I see almost everyday, I am ... read more

Selamnachu! Its now week three, almost four of living in Addis Ababa and every day I learn something new. I started my first Amharic tutoring session this week so I will hopefully be able to communicate a little more with the kids at Onesimus and Ethiopians in general very soon. Amharic has its own alphabet which I know very little about, but it looks immensely complicated. I’ve found it is the most important to be literate when you have to get a minibus during rush hour, transportation here is kind of an art, it is quite simple in a way (and absolutely not in other ways). There are contract taxi’s which are regular taxis and the real adventure, are mini-buses or some people call them taxis which I find constantly confusing. Also available are ambasa buses, ... read more

Selam! Greetings from Addis Ababa! Its been six years since my year in Italy and now I'm back again with another blog! For those of you who followed my blog before, a lot has happened since then, so here’s a brief update: After finishing high school, I started college at UNC-Asheville. I studied abroad for a semester in Brazil, and another semester in France. I still managed to graduate in 4 years with a BA in International Economics. I am here now in Addis with Cherokee Gives Back, a great opportunity that I learned about from a good family friend. I am really looking forward to the next few months here. I arrived in Addis Ababa almost two weeks ago and every day since my arrival has been an adventure. I’m here to volunteer, but even ... read more

May 28, 2006 Ciao! It’s been so long since the last time I wrote. This month has been very busy for me, and I’ve seen so many new things. Around a week after coming back from Venice, I went to Rome for three days. Nine exchange students and a volunteer in one hostel room, yay, comfy! Haha. It was a really fun trip because our volunteer knew how to get the most out of our trip. I had a great time, even with staying in a room for 10 and sharing a 3 or 4 bathrooms with around 45 other people. For Easter I was very lucky to get permission to go to Florence and go meet my neighbors John and Linda. We stayed in a beautiful house near Cortona, there were also friends and relatives ... read more

Hey! Last week was exchange week for me. Exchange week is exchange between cities and gives exchange students a chance to see cities they probably wouldn’t have seen were it not for this wonderful idea. For my week I went to Venice! On Saturday I arrived and my host family came to pick me up from the train station. Before even going to the house, the two sisters, Silvia and Elisa, and I went to get some gelato, this family knows what I like! Silvia worked at the gelato place last summer and the owner was really nice, he explained the difference between ice cream and gelato to me, gelato has significantly less fat and is tastier. At night I went out for pizza with Elisa and her friends in Mestre which has a piazza that ... read more

April 8th 2006

Hey everyone! I guess its finally time to describe where I have been living for the past five months, Irsina. The locals call it a "paese" or "paesino". In Italian "Paese" with an uppercase letter means country, with a lowercase letter it means town or village and with the ending -ino its a very small town or village. I have a great urge to call Irsina a village, but in reality its more like a town. Irsina was once a very important place. Decades, more likely centuries before the birth of Christ there was Greek presence on Monte d'Irsi (one of the larger hills around for which Irsina is named after). Then came the Romans who built the cathedral and the foundations for the town. After the decline and fall of the Romans, Irsina came under ... read more

Skiing in Alta Badia(Southern Alps!!) January 29, 2006 Hey! Last week I went skiing in the alps! The mountains are so beautiful, a whole different kind of beautiful than the Colorado mountains. It was six entire days of skiing for me, didn’t do much other than that. The car trip was only about 12 hours, not bad. I’m not feeling inspired to write right now, I felt like saying the trip was great and posting some pictures. Have a great week! Alyssa ... read more
