Thanks for sharing how travel has changed you... looking back on your epic travels, which I started following about half way through, I'm amazed with your perseverance!
Hiking in the South Island This pic captures the ethereal feel of hiking through the beech forests of the South Island perfectly. Little wonder the Lord of the Rings films were filmed in NZ.
The first of five months! Oh, I do like your pace of travel! Free-camping, incredible beauty and such friendly people--no wonder you spent five months camping--best wishes on Trev lasting to the end! I once read that what you do on New Year's Day is a harbinger of the year to come, so here's to starting your days with a bit of the bubbly!
Impressive overland trip! We tend to travel for four or five weeks at a time, so I was interested to see how your one month itinerary for China panned out - sounds like you covered a really diverse range of places. Like you, we predominantly get Cantonese-style food in Australia, so I was intrigued by your hot fire bread soup! Excellent photos of the Great Wall :)
Congratulations on having overlanded from London to Hong Kong!!! It's an itinerary I hope to follow some day. Thus far I've only traveled east to west across northern China. I have to do north to south.
ZIG ZAG Having explored 16 provences in China I am amazed at how you did it in 30 days. From Inner Mongolia to Beijing, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Guangxi, Guangdong to Hong Kong with provences in between...wow. Quite a zig zag. And to think you did it by train. Wow!
Fast trains are the answer! Hi Dave, thanks for commenting, it's always good to see someone has read our blog!
it was quite a stretch to do this in 30 days but now China has built fast trains between most major cities it is possible. We would have loved to have spent more time exploring as we feel we just got a taster of many areas but unfortunately our visa restricted us to a month - just means that we'll have to return one day as there's so much we didn't see!
Excellent adventues! How fabulous that you explored the Gobi Desert--certainly off the beaten track! And camels, yurts and friendly singing people--what could be better? Well, maybe a shower and less mutton, eh?
Many lives in many miles What a wonderful trip you are having and many, many more miles to come. For some it would take many lives to dream...to even possibly achieve. The best is you can do it together. The stories and memories you will be able to share for many years to come...priceless!
Thanks Dave. We realise that some day soon we will have to get back to real life, but we will enjoy putting that off for as long as possible. Still some exciting miles to do.
Thanks! It's great to know people actually read our blogs (particularly people outside our immediate families!). We're just planning our next trip - overland to China. Should be an adventure! :-)
Hoppers! You certainly saw a lot of the island in your time in SL. I was born in Kandy but don't have many memories of it apart from the immediate surrounds of our house. I loved that you tried the traditional breakfasts. Egg hoppers with chicken curry and coconut sambal is my all time favourite Sri Lankan meal, but I don't think I could have it for breakfast :)
Spicy breakfasts We only spent one night in Kandy as we sort of ran out of time, but what we saw of it was good. Really pretty setting around the lake or "tank" as they seemed to be called in Sri Lanka.
I have to admit though we struggled a bit with the spicy breakfasts and on many days tried to find sweet "short eats" from local bakeries served with very milky coffee, which were very tasty. :-)
We loved our train travels in Sri Lanka. We were almost the only people on this train as there was a much more straight forward bus option available, but the train was much more relaxing and so much nicer. One of the highlights of our time in Sri Lanka has been hanging out of train windows watching the scenery go by and keeping an eye out for wild elephants. Very different to train travel in the UK!
A great ending! Great way to end--friendly people and curries, bits of history and beach, and fine relaxing before going home and visiting all your friends. A great, exotic ending.
Hello. We are Ross and Liz and on the 20th November 2013 (a wet and grey British winter's day) we finally set off on our long planned trip around the globe. We started our adventure in Buenos Aires, Argentina and have since made our way around South America, South East Asia, Sri Lanka and overland from the UK to Hong Kong, where we hopped over to Japan and then down to New Zealand. After five fantastic months camper vanning around NZ we are heading over to Australia for three months before finally heading home (via Thailand and Frankfurt).
We travel at a nice slow pace, visiting all the s... full info
