Today was my first day of sightseeing. I had hoped to get a feel for the country by taking a city tour of Johannesburg but the trip wasn't running. I opted instead for a full day's safari at Pilanesberg National Park and am so glad I did. I have had a fantastic day, have had a wonderful introduction to Africa and finally feel like my trip is starting. I woke at 7am and ran straight for my hot shower to defrost for the day. I walked out to the lapa to find breakfast and was soon sitting in the darkened interior sleepily looking out over the gardens munching on toast. I was in my room working out what to take for the day when the man from reception came banging on my door saying a taxi ... read more

I set off for Africa yesterday. I got through Heathrow fairly quickly although take off was slightly delayed. Our pilot was a very cheerful chap who chatted away to us over the loud speakers and gave us what was a cross between a guided tour and a weather report... 'now as we take off into the dark cloud ahead you'll be able to see Heathrow's new terminal 5...' As we finally took off and began the long flight to South Africa he kept it up... 'and to your left you'll see cloud and on our right is, well, more cloud, and rain, we're just surrounded by cloud now.' Eventually he gave up and moved onto the safety instructions including the rather humourous 'for safety reasons we do not recommend sleeping in the aisles'! The flight was ... read more

We had a leisurely start to our last day in Paris. We were to check out of the hotel by midday so decided not to leave too early for should we tire of sightseeing we would not be able to return to the hotel before having to travel homeward. We probably spent more time in our hotel today than we have the entire trip. We got up late and wandered down for breakfast. For once we had time to enjoy our meal, although the extra time meant I was able to eat twice as many croissants as usual which isn't necessarily a good thing!! Back in our room we lazed about, flicked through our photos on the digital camera, watched a film in French, cleaned up and packed and polished off as much of our extra ... read more

The weather wasn't much improved this morning but at least it wasn't raining. We breakfasted downstairs then headed off to the Eiffel Tower, taking the metro all the way to Bir Hakim again. The only problem with Paris is the sheer sprawling size of the city. Even the main tourist sights are miles from each other. Fortunately after a few stops we were able to get seats on the metro. We even got entertainment as two guys playing clarinets came onto the train and proceeded to busk right there in the carriage. We followed the signs to the Eiffel Tower which isn't exactly hard to miss anyway. It seems no matter where we go in paris we can usually catch a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower. When we reached the base of the tower we had ... read more

We set off for Versailles today despite the dark clouds gathering in the sky. Originally the de facto capital of France Versailles is now a suburb of the sprawling city over 17 kilometres from the city centre. We hoped we might be lucky with the weather and since we only have two whole days in Paris anyway we either had to go today or tomorrow. We'd been told at reception to leave by 8-8.30 but by the time we'd got ready, had breakfast and made a packed lunch it was a bit later than that. We took the metro to Bir Hakim where we could get the train onward to Versailles. Although our metro passes let us on to the station they weren't valid for the train so, not wishing to risk a fine, we walked ... read more

I struggled out of bed before six this morning and checked my luggage and tickets with bleary eyes. We arrived at the train station to find it deserted bar two members of staff and I grew increasingly anxious as we waited on a deserted platform with no sign of the train being ready to depart. Finally three minutes before departure the driver strolled up and let us on the train. We eventually arrived at St Pancras International, made our way through security (which is none too strict as I got through with a nail file shoved in my handbag). We bought some seriously overpriced sandwiches for lunch before boarding the Eurostar. It is the first time I've used it and I was pleasantly surprised. Very efficient - we were in Paris a couple of hours later. ... read more

Well it's been another one of those two-days-blurred-into-one!! The wedding celebrations began early yesterday morning. Shivali and I were woken by Arpit calling up the stairs. I grudgingly got out of bed - I think I was lucky if I'd got 6 hours sleep. Shivali went straight downstairs while I pulled the shutter open a crack to get some light. The village looked so peaceful in the early morning and the cool morning air helped me wake up a bit. I adjusted the clothes I'd slept in and tried to do something with my hair in the dim light before going downstairs. It didn't help that as I came down I was greeted by three of the guys who were all still tucked up in bed in the room below. I located Arpit and asked about ... read more

I woke at around 6.20 this morning as Shivali lurched out of bed and raced off to do something or other. I finally followed, sleepily trudging downstairs. A familiar face appeared in the kitchen doorway and called out a cheerful hello - Arpit arrived from Shimla early this morning after finishing his exams. I located Shivali in her bedroom with Anu and we all had a quick breakfast on the porch. I followed Anu and Shivali to the small temple down the road and then we returned home for the bangle ceremony. Shivali sat in front of a tray of bangles with a candle in the centre. Each of the women went forward one at a time to place a red and a green bangle alternatively on her wrists. I asked what the significance was and ... read more

Well what does any bride need to do before her wedding? Go to a beauty parlour for a complete pampering session of course! So we headed off into town today. After taking our breakfast in a sunny spot on the porch we caught the bus and were soon wandering the streets, stepping over the puddles and avoiding the local cows, in serach of lip liner and bindis. Shivali took me into a shop she knows well and we sorted through a box of lip liners comparing colours and then looked at a bewildering array of bindis. Shivali wanted to know which I thought suited her best but I only gave my opinion hesitantly, after all I'm no expert in the latest fashions! Our next stop was a clothes shop where we bought some cotton trousers for ... read more

Well yesterday hardly seems worth mentioning! While I thought the saga of trying to get a taxi north was over, it was in fact only just beginning. I awoke at 6.30am to get ready to leave. I called the driver on his mobile at 7am to confirm he would be there in an hour and then went out to buy some water and bananas for the trip. When 8 o clock arrived and the taxi hadn't I called Shivali. What followed was a hideously stressful four hours where the taxi driver alternatively 'hadn't been told the right time but would come in an hour' or 'couldn't find the hotel but was on his way and would be there soon'. After a lot of phoning between myself, the taxi driver, the hotel staff and Shivali and her ... read more
