I have finally made it to Swaziland!! Yesterday proved to be amazingly relaxing mainly due to the fact I woke up with a horrible cold and found the thought of sightseeing to be too much like hard work. I had a lie in and a leisurley breakfast and then asked in reception about my Swaziland trip. I was told there was no further news but maybe my pitiful sniffles did the trick as the second time I asked I was told everything had been organised. I spent most of the day shuffling around my room and the public lounge. I did walk to the supermarket for food but it was an uneventful trip as I now know the way and know not to trust the little green man! For the rest of the day I lounged ... read more

Today was the day we all finally parted ways. The others were all bound for the airport while I was due to leave for another hostel before setting off for Swaziland tomorrow. We had a last breakfast together and then I headed for the internet while the others went to finish packing. I got some bad news while I was in reception, not only were they unable to run the day trip of Pretoria I wanted to do but there was a problem with the three day trip into Swaziland as well. I went back to our room with the assurance they would sort something out in a couple of hours and arrived back in my own building to find there was no water and the others were complaining about not being able to get showers ... read more

Yesterday the rest of the group set off to tour Johannesburg and Pretoria. I wasn't interested in doing the same trip again and though I looked at other day trips I couldn't seem to find any enthusiasm for getting up before 7, throwing things in a bag and rushing off for a day of sightseeing. I did still get up early and joined the others for breakfast in the main building of the hostel, although we didn't see Carolina again. We helped ourselves to the breakfast buffet before returning to our room. While Em-J and Iris grabbed their things and rushed off to meet their driver I flung myself back on the bed and pulled out my postcards to write. Eventually I went over to reception to ask for directions to the town centre hoping to ... read more

I actually slept until 7.30 this morning and didn't wander up to the Lion park until later. I wasn't feeling dedicated enough to clean the lion enclosures when I didn't have to! I took the opportunity to walk around the campsite and take photos and then went up to the Lion Park and visited each of the animals in turn. The giraffe family were all together in the main camp and Georgina finally seems to be quite happy away from her old enclosure. I grabbed a bag of giraffe pellets and chatted to Gambit and Purdy over their breakfast snack before going to say good morning to the meerkats. I timed my arrival at the cub enclosures well as the cleaning had been finished but it was still really quiet. The visitors hadn't really started coming ... read more

It was my last day working at the Lion Park today. Since I spoke to Carolina on behalf of the rest of the group we have arranged a later pick-up tomorrow so we can have more time with the cubs, but today was our last day of work. I set of to the enclosures first thing this morning. The smell of lion poo in the morning is not pleasant and I have also noticed it is particularly bad if they've had fresh meat the day before... which they did yesterday. I hurried around the enclosure trying not to breathe. The cubs are quite filthy, which makes me wonde rif the staff ever have to give them a bath. A particularly filthy cub crawled onto my shoes and set about chewing my laces. I managed to disentangle ... read more

I was back to the usual routine today after my trip away from the Lion Park yesterday. I set off for the early morning shift and got to see the cubs first thing today as I now have enclosure cleaning duty. Glenn, Tara and I quickly located the things we'd need for cleaning the enclosures in the hovel and set to work. I soon discovered that our cute little cubs are quite revolting creatures. We walked around the enclosures picking up the mess they'd made in the night while the cubs trailed along behind us and every so often lept onto the bin liner, or stuck their faces into our scoops to have a good sniff. I left Glenn scooping out the pools, a job that would be completely unecessary if the plugs weren't completely blocked ... read more

I had a unexpected trip today. I was sitting alone in the cool morning air hands cupped around a mug of hot tea when Carmel joined me, not dressed in uniform. I asked where she was going and she said that she'd been talking to a tour guide who'd been telling her about Glen Afric, a game reserve nearby where they film the ITV series 'Wild at Heart' and when she'd expressed an interest in going he'd said he was taking a couple of people there today and could take her along too for a reduced fee! When I said I was familiar with the series she asked if I wanted to come too and said that she'd already invited Em-J. I decided that since practically everyone had had a trip away from the park yesterday ... read more

It's been a fairly quiet day at the Lion Park. The most excitment I had was at breakfast since Purdy was still loose in the camp. I was sitting on the bench outside the kitchen when a large shadow passed over the material covering and rippled over the wooden posts of the fence. I looked up to see a giant giraffe's head silhouette looming over me before she got bored and walked off. Glenn soon came to join me and as the two of us sat there Purdy returned. This time she managed to find the entrance to the fenced off area and took a few steps inside craning her neck right into the raise seating area where we were having breakfast and peering through into the kitchen. We managed to dissuade her from joining us ... read more

I had a new morning duty starting today - nursery! I wasn't too worried about it since the two cubs have gone to cub world. There was one morning after the cubs had a slight toilet problem followed by the realisation it's fun to slide in that I was exceptionally glad I wasn't responsible for cleaning it up! There have been days when we've been ready to throw up on entrance to the nursery and I've been glad I only ever had to grab a broom and run back outside to the trucks. The nursery seemed clean and relatively fresh smelling as Glenn, Tara and I walked in. No-one else was in nursery so we were a little unsure where to start. Since I have fed the meerkats before I decided I could find the fruit ... read more

It was my last morning on truck duty today. Glenn, Tara and I walked up and stopped in the middle of an empty car park, no trucks in sight. We successfully located the trucks in the staff car park by the nursery. I picked a truck and struggled to get in while holding the cleaning things and my own bag. Fortunately a member of staff spotted me futile attempt to get in the truck and ran to my rescue. I've obviously got the knack of cleaning these trucks now and finsihed the job in twenty minutes. Tara walked up to see the end of my acrobatic routine hanging upside-down on the seats and then we hurried down to the cubs to make the most of our free time. Although we were expecting the day to be ... read more
