This is a map one of my classmates put together showing where everyone in our class has been interning. The Moore School of Business certainly has made its mark on the world! http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=http:%2F%2Fspreadsheets.google.com%2Fpub%3Fkey%3DpoHdR_u5qzndQWR48sALvFg%26output%3Dtxt%26gid%3D0%26range%3DA1&t=k&om=0&ie=UTF8&ll=8.05923,24.960938&spn=126.642157,329.0625&z=2 If you copy this link and paste it into your internet browser, it should pull up a Google Map - you can click on the dots on the map to see what city it is and how many students from our class are studying there.... read more

Nearing the end...

Hello again from down under (or g’day as they say around here!) There hasn’t been too much going on lately - pretty much same old, same old… At work, I’m starting to wrap up my project - the beginning of the end, as they say. I’ve been finalizing pricing structure and introductory promotions to kick-off the product re-launch, and I drafted up a flyer for the re-launch that Lisa, one of the marketing staff, has created for me. I really don’t have much left except finalizing the marketing plan report, finishing the PowerPoint slides, and writing up notes to practice my 30-minute presentation. I’m starting to get really excited about the re-launch and will have to stay in touch to see its results on future sales. As for my free-time, I’m managing to keep that ... read more

The road trip this weekend was a success, and except for a short rain on Saturday afternoon, the weather was gorgeous! I left work early on Friday and made my way towards Lorne. It took a while to get through traffic and get on the other side of the city, and the road closer to the coast was pretty curvy (a lot like driving through the mountains back home), so I didn't make it to the hotel until about 8:00, a little later than I would have liked. But, I got checked in to my room overlooking the pier, got some dinner, and relaxed for the rest of the night. The hotel where I stayed, the Grand Pacific, was the first coastal hotel built in Victoria (late 1800s) and was originally only accessible by ship. ... read more

Not too much exciting going on at work last week. The big event of the week for me was a workshop I gave to a group of the office staff on the inter-company data system. The system is basically a relational database system that allows us to trace sales history, orders and inventory, whether sales are on track for the month or the year, etc. The system has been in the New York office for a while but is new to the Australia office. David e-mailed me before I came and asked me to get some training in the program to help them understand it better here. So, after a quick instructional overview in New York and playing around with the program for about three weeks here, I was asked to lead the workshop. It ... read more

Catching Up

Last weekend I went to a football game on Friday night with a couple of guys from the office. We took the train in, grabbed a burger and beer in the beer garden at Cricketer's Arms, then headed across the street to the game. This game wasn't as exciting - I was pulling for Melbourne, but they played horribly and lost to Richmond to give Richmond their first win of the season (after about 10 weeks of losing). Afterwards, we met up with a guy Dean knew from an ad agency he's worked with and went to the Richmond social club. Just hung out for a little while chatting - we missed seeing the players because they were just starting to come over when we had to leave to catch the last train out of the ... read more

Things are still going well down under. Last week I had a "progress report"-type meeting with Dean to go over where I was with the marketing plan and discuss any questions or feedback. He seemed surprised by how much I had gotten done in the first two weeks, but I assured him that the implementation would slow me down. After four years of psychology research and a year of reading Harvard business cases, analysis comes pretty easily for me - it's the marketing strategy and implementation plan that is gonna stump me. But, then again, that will also be the fun part - figuring out how to make people buy our products instead of the competitors' products, getting inside their heads and using my psychology skills to persuade them! I also got thrown a little ... read more

Had a great weekend! The footy Friday night was a lot of fun - I've got the basic flow of the game and the scoring down, but I'm still not real sure about all of the penalties. There were a few times they would stop the play, and I'd have to ask Frank and Lina what the penalty was (or sometimes, I could just discern from what the people around me were yelling at the umpires!!) haha - It felt a lot like a football game at home - same atmosphere, just a different game. By the end, though, I was following pretty well and was yelling along with the crowd when our team made a "mark" (part of the game, kinda hard to explain in writing) or scored! The teams I saw play were ... read more

I’ve successfully arrived down under!! Sorry it took so long to get an update posted - between getting settled in, working, and trying to figure out the best way to get internet at home, I’ve actually been pretty busy. Anyway, on to the update… My flight arrived with only a slight delay on Sunday morning, both suitcases arrived with me, and I had no troubles at customs (I had been a little worried because there was initially some confusion about what type of visa I needed - but they didn’t even ask any questions!) I’m staying with the logistics manager from the office (so when I refer to Clara, that’s who I’m talking about) and Clara’s chocolate lab, Baci (pronounced “bah-chee”). Clara is taking GREAT care of me - she made what everyone has told me ... read more

I successfully made it through the first segment of my internship assignment in New York. I spent the 3 weeks collecting and organizing demographic information for Laerdal's major market segments (Healthcare, Pre-Hospital, Professional Education, Government, and National Accounts). I used information from existing marketing plans, databases the company had purchased, previously collected demographic information from other Laerdal departments/employees, and LOTS of Google searches!! I combined all the information into Excel spreadsheets for each market segment to show comparisons across various sources and discrepancies within the existing information. I also created a "bibliography" to provide details and websites for the sources I used (in case Laerdal employees would like to access or cite the same sources in the future) and a PowerPoint presentation summarizing what I had done and th... read more
