From Rohet to Khumbhalgarh, the countryside became more mountainous. We climbed up into the range of hills (the Aravalli Hills) that crosses northern India. The vegetation was much more dense (but not exactly the rainforest of North Qld conjured up by our drivers remarks). Being winter it was also fairly dry, although their were many gullies and several stony creeks with water still in them. The hills are a haven for wildlife, including leopards, various types of monkeys, antelopes, jackals, leopards and panthers. We stopped at a site in the foothills where several Jain temples had been built. The main temple (Ranakpur) which dates from about the 13th/14th century, was absolutely magnificent!!!
