~ * ~ DAY 1 ~ * ~ UTRECHT We took the train from Schipol Airport to Utrecht. Once in Utrecht I bought a strippenkaart (€7.70 for 15 strips) from the bus station and the bus driver stamped 3 zones for the ride to Robbie’s apartment. Once Miranda got in, we headed to the city center. From the central station, we walked toward the large Dom tower. We found our way to the main canal, which was lined with shops and cafes on both sides. However, most windows we passed on our way to Oude Pothuys were dark. We climbed down the stairs at Oude Pothuys, where there is live music every night, only to find we were a bit early for the music. The only thing on the bar menu was “Nachos with sauce” but ... read more

~ * ~ DAY 1 ~ * ~ December 11, 2010 LONDON I hopped on my Air New Zealand flight from Hong Kong to London (special one-way promo ticket). I was impressed by Air NZ overall, especially their in-flight entertainment system. Sadly, I fell asleep and missed the ice cream! 13 hours and 3 loops around Heathrow later, I was back in London! After waiting 40 minutes to go through immigration, I headed for the tube. I was glad to still have my Oyster card on hand. We had dinner at Ping Pong, a dim sum restaurant. Ping Pong is one of those "hip" London chains, where groups sit at large tables. Our group of 10 shared a table, though most of us ordered the set meal, which came with an assortment of fried and steamed ... read more

Vietnam: Hanoi & Halong Bay ~ * ~ DAY 1 ~ * ~ Landing in Hanoi, we hopped on the $2 shuttle van, supposedly heading to the Vietnam Airlines headquarters near the Old Quarter. The highway from the airport to the city cut through miles of fields and was lined with gigantic billboards, all promoting high end and high tech products, from luxury cars to digital cameras. Upon reaching the congested Old Quarter, the driver picked up a local who graciously offered to take us directly to our hotels. We proceeded on a complicated, twisting route through all 36 streets of the Old Quarter, dropping pairs of travelers off. Finally, it was our turn, but the van took a quick turn past the lake. Way past the French Quarter, the van stopped and a man opened ... read more

Cambodia ~ * ~ DAY 1 ~ * ~ A crowd of taxi drivers descending on us as we exited the Phnom Penh International Airport, but it was too late to run back in to the safety of the baggage claim. Central Market Our city exploration began with a trip to the Central Market. I guess we couldn't wait to start shopping! The Central Market, aka Psar Thmei, was housed in a yellow art-deco building that was built over a former lake. We walked past the entrance of tourist souvenirs and t-shirts, and in the dark center ranged a variety of goods, everything from silver jewelry and watches, to pots and pans, flowers, fresh vegetables and slabs of red meat. Wat Phnom Wat Phnom, the legendary site of the founding of Phnom Penh. The surrounding gardens ... read more

Vancouver ~ * ~ DAY 1 ~ * ~ I took an early Quickshuttle bus ride from Seattle to Vancouver, on which I slept the whole way. It was two hours from Seattle to the border and one hour from the border to Vancouver airport. Crossing the border from the US to Canada was an interesting ordeal, as I got questioned by the customs official to the extreme, especially for my declared 2 day trip! Official: Why are you going to Canada? (To visit a friend.) how do you know this friend? (From high school.) Did she go to high school in the US, or did you go to high school in Canada? Official: How much luggage do you have with you? (I showed her my backpack and laptop.) Where is the rest of your luggage? ... read more

Seattle ~ * ~ DAY 1 ~ * ~ Arriving on my early morning flight from New York (caught the 4am bus through Harlem), I landed to a sunny day in Seattle. My friend David met me at the airport and we headed toward the university district, north of the airport. We took a stroll around University of Washington, which had a beautiful library and a great view of Mount Rainier (since it was a sunny, clear day). From the university, several buses went downtown. Pike Place Pike Place is one of the must see stops in Seattle. It is similar to a fisherman’s wharf, where we could see men throwing fish as customers made their orders from a selection of seafood laid out decoratively on ice. We also browsed a tea and spice shop, and ... read more

Our next stop: Austin, the "Live Music Capital of the World." After two hours on the highway, we rolled into the Austin Greyhound station and took a bus toward our hostel. The local bus took us on a mini city tour through the University of Texas (saw the huge stadium under renovation) and down Congress Avenue. We were staying at the Hostelling International hostel on South Lakeshore Blvd, right next to the lake! The hostel had a large bright living room with couches and tables, a well-equipped kitchen, a full bookshelf of resources and stories, and free internet! The women's dormitory that we were in had 16 beds and lockers -- always remember to carry your own lock! It comes in handy! "The Republic of Texas" Heading back downtown, we hopped on a free trolley - ... read more

Getting there Our flight from Baltimore to Atlanta was delayed due to thunderstorms and hail around Atlanta, so after 4 hours of sitting on the runway with no real knowledge of what the situation was...we finally took off and landed in ATL, 10 minutes after the last flight to New Orleans had left. We found ourselves having to sleep overnight in one of the world's busiest airports. We tried to find a quiet section near our gate, and dozed off to sleep with the sounds of CNN and vacuuming in the background. The air conditioning was freezing, and it was so nice that one of the cleaners came up to us and offered us blankets for the night. The Big Easy We arrived to a warm New Orleans and our troubles melted away...although we still had ... read more
