Why not, it's Saturday??? KFC for lunch, races in the arvo and the Western derby in the evening!!!Just like being back home.......Almost!!!! Arrived trackside an hour early, which wouldn’t have been so bad except that it was stinking hot!!!(Common occurrence in these Asian countries of late) This gave me the chance to have a good look around, search for a cold beer and seek out some hot tips from the locals! The races themselves are run very similar to races back home except for a couple of things or I’ll coin the common Vietnamese term “same, same but different!” The horse’s look more suited to giving children rides at the local show than competing against each other on the race track!! (May have to look into bringing one of Errol’s nags over from home. it ... read more

www.albyadventures.com Mission Complete… Operation “Headless Chicken” was a raging success! I didn’t lose anybody in the process, so that was a great first up result!!! At no stage was I standing at the end of a dark and dodgy dead end street, reading a map upside down, scratching my head, thinking that this isn’t the place we’re supposed to be!!!! As far as I know that there wasn’t even talk of mutiny…(not saying that there wasn’t, but I didn’t hear of any if there was!) It all started off a little too well for my liking after hearing the horror stories from other leaders along the way….I think I just got very lucky! I had a great group of people who liked beer.. I’m fully aware of the “what goes up, must come down” theory ... read more

Because the chickens not stupid that’s why!!!!! My biggest safety concern while I was in Cambodia was definately anything to do with being on or near a road. Walking home in a drunken stupor a 4 am in the morning no problem, riding a pushbike during peak hour that’s another story. While I was fortunate enough to date (touchwood) to avoid any major incidents I’ve had countless near misses including a couple of bumps from cars. Full concentration is recondmended when crossing a road, driving on a road or even walking on the footpath which quite often doubles as a road in heavy traffic. Around 50 people die each day on Cambodian roads everyday..Law enforcement of the road rules seems only to take place when the local “boy’s in Blue” need a little extra pocketmoney ... read more

Never a dull moment! Here's a few of the highpoints and low points of Cambodia * Kids wearing those squeaky shoes..I know we have them back in Oz but every kid seems to be wearing them here..Drives you crazy!! * You can get a tasty 2 course meal for a dollar. * Crazy- a very offensive word to call any Cambodian. *To Marry a Cambodian women the dowry (or whatever the word is) ranges from $2000-$10000 depending on your barting skills. *Ordering a steak 8 times out of 10 will lead to disappointment and time on the toilet the next day.. * Children selling souvenirs around the temples know more about your country than you do.. *Going to "kill" your opponent on the sporting field has a whole new meaning here. *A motobike without the ... read more

Phnom Pehn the capital has it all!! A dodgy past, beautiful architecture,(thanks the French!),bustling markets, international restaurants from all over the world, traffic from hell, interesting nightlife, the might Mekong river and the best sports bar in the world..(3 big screens!!!) perfect for watching the world cup! I’ve been offered cocaine ,heroin, yama, ecstasy, happy pizza’s, Bob Marley cigarettes, bad girls, nice girls ( the bar girls that are looking for a relationship!), sisters, brothers, sickening young girls, real diamonds (opposed to the not real ones!), spiders, monkeys, ancient artifacts, cheap land (which I’m sure the real landowners wouldn’t have known anything about!) and that was just at my guest house, I hadn’t even walked out on the street yet!!! I even went to a restaurant that advertised that it could make any sandwich… So ... read more

Chai an administrator at Salarin Kampuchea, the school where my teaching career blossomed, was kind enough to invite to the countryside for a day to meet his friends and to enjoy a bit of good old fashioned traditional home-style cooking. A carton of Crownies $9 was the going rate for the day…an offer I gladly accepted. 8am sharp was the time Chai picked me up from my guest house..(he wanted 7 am but I talked him around!)I was bright eyed and bushy tailed after a solid 4hr sleep following the Friday night “end of working week” celebrations. “We’re off hunting” he informed on the way out to his friends village, “We have to catch lunch first”! This will be interesting I thought, going by my last 2 hunting expeditions (fishless charter boat fishing trips!) “Have ... read more

After only seeing the insides of the Angkor What bar for my first couple of days in Siem Reap, I was well overdue to go and check out the real thing. It was the reason why I came here in the first place…not the cheap buckets!! I hired a bicycle and made my way to one of the worlds most famous world heritage sites Angkor Wat.. Hiring a bike was a great idea after to talking to fellow tourists at 2am at the bar who’d done the “temple thing “on bikes the previous day. Making the around 25km round trip and climbing over temples, nursing a hangover as the temperature soared above the 35 degree mark wasn’t the wisest decision I’ve ever made considering it only cost $12 to hire a motodriver for the day..If ... read more

Well basically when I was heading into Cambodia I was shitting myself!! We're all fully aware about the horror atrocities that happened here 30 years, what was I thinking going to a country that everything I’d seen or heard beforehand about the place was pretty much evil. My confidence didn’t improve much when our trustworthy bus guide warned us to be very careful with our belongings after we crossed the border as there are pickpockets everywhere! After nervously making the walk across no mans land to Cambodia it didn’t take long to realize that we were leaving a developed country and heading into a 3rd world country (one of the better off 3rd world countries mind you!) Talk about lack of bins at this place... strewth mate, I’ve never seen so much rubbish scattered everywhere ... read more

Alby teaching English! Well, it is Cambodia where anything can happen and usually does…. You can only drink cocktails on beautiful tropical islands for so long until a feeling of guilt starts to play on your conscience. (Plus the fact the monsoons were coming!) So, Siem Reap, Cambodia was the destination of choice partly due to the fact they were screaming out for volunteers and that it’s quite cheap to survive there. I was paying $100 US a month for a guest house room with fan, hot water, cable TV and wait for it… this was the sealer…FREE laundry!! Salarin Kampuchea was the lucky school to recruit the tanned Aussie lad with mumbling English. The school has a couple of hundred or so snotty nosed, dirty, smelly loveable little tackers with the odd adult thrown ... read more

Pre Cambodia days! (well, mostly!) Asia » Kazakhstan By Alby April 8th 2007 Alby Mangels Heres a collection of the wonderful people ive meet BC (before Cambodia!) looking at their worst...and there best!! Dont blame me for the crappy snaps...your the one with the alcohol problem ;-) Please dont judge a book by its cover, some of these people are twice as bad as they look! Just to carify the term "bucket". A bucket in Thailand is a lethal combination of Vodka, redbull and sprite..(my preferred choice!) served in a...you guessed it... bucket!! Great fun at the time but not much so in the morning.. I apologise if i've missed anyone out of the crappy snaps photo session. I'll endeavour to keep this updated as more crapp... read more
