Warsaw day 2. Hey guys .... continuing on from the awesome card game, the next day we head to the Warsaw Uprising museum. This museum is a must see for any one who comes to Warsaw or anyone who has an interest in WWII. The Museum takes you from onset of WWII with Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland on the 1st of September 1939. From which the Allies declared war on Germany. On the 2nd of September Russia invaded from the East and basically split Poland in two. Germany and Russian had got together several months earlier to agree on the line of seperation and sign a non-agression pact. It the goes into detail about life in Germany, the commencement of deportations, the creation of ghetto's and persecution of anyone and everyone. In then talks about ... read more

Well... i was right about one thing... it was the bus ride from hell. Russians yelling, bus had more stops then a datsun with unleaded in it, crappy seats and no sleep. Arriving in Warsaw at the friendly time of about 5.15am. No money (atms did not like my card for some reason, deutesch bank must be after that money from 2004 still), no ones speaks english and I seem to lose the ability to navigate through the night. But its April fools days so here goes nothing. Catch a train to the centre of Warsaw and walk for 20 mins to the hostel which is open 24hrs a day except the one hour that we happen to arrive. So decided to eat a few snacks just outside and wait for something to happen. Eventually they ... read more

hey guys, currently killling time in the hostel awaiting my overnight bus to Warsaw, Poland. But the last 36 hours have been spent in lil old Vilnius. First arrived and with my dutch mate we explored the city, which (by my reconning) has 1 church for every 5 people. The most numerous by far considering the population is only a mere 400,000. So slightly bigger than Adelaide, but with less churchs. But these are the most animated by far - anyway enough on churches. The rest of the old town is larger than talinn and Riga that I have been to recently and it also seem to have a good combination of modern and old. Lots of bars, lots of cafes also. Made the mistake of ordering a hot chocolate and got a melt bar of ... read more

Lativa is another place, like Estonia that has recently been freed from the soviet's (ie 1991) thanks to Boris. But almost 20 years on you can still seem the impact it had on their lives from living in egg boxes, to speak your mind got you 5 to 10 years in the hardest salt mines that can find. The museum of occupation detailing the atrocities and mass deporations that took place from 1940 when Soviets first took over from the switch to nazi Germany and persecution of the Jews and the swap back again in 1944 to the Soviets who held it to the present day. I can't help thinking that the Allies should have listened to Patton (american general from world war 2) and told Russia to get back over it own border line. Sorry ... read more

Hey hey, well slept most of the flight from Stansted to Tallinn. But coming into land I got an idea of how cold it was going to be due all the snow still on the ground. Tallinn is some 54 degress north of the equator. Going through the whole passport control which is pretty easy with an Australian passport - they nearly roll their eyes thinking - another bloody aussie. We're everywhere. This got proved when I got to the Old Town Hostel (which looks like your nan's house) and meet three aussie's in two hours all from perth. Seriously what are the odds? First night crashed a medieval bar with one of the Perth dudes. They serve no coke, or anything else made after the 14th century. But the food was good and beer even ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London March 24th 2009

After being found the weakest link at work. I have decided to go travelling, spending my hard earned cash on beer, dodgy tourist attractions, buses to the middle of nowhere and silly souveniours. I leave tomorrow morning at the ungodly hour of 2.45am for a 6.45am flight from stanstead (just south of edinburgh...apparently) to Talinn in Estonia. Not sure what I will find but will be fun never the less. ... read more

Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Val Thorens January 4th 2009

Well this is my first blog for the new year and hopefully I will keep them regular and current when something happens. 20 Dec 08 to 3 Jan 08 Flew from Gatwick to Grenoble, France. Note Gatwick is absoulte chaos and I am convinced that a 14 yr old came up with the chaotic logistics plan they saw the line snake around on it self and saw us waiting for 2 hrs before being called out of the line rushed to the shambles of the flight desk. After packing our own luggage in the crates, we bascially ran all the way to the flight, which left only 2 hrs late. After a 4 hr bus ride to Val Thorens we finally arrive at 4 pm. To the lovely club med experiance. ... read more
