I am a Landscape Architect wanting to walk the great landscapes of Britain. Alas work and lack of time has always gotten in the way. Now I am trying to turn the negative of redundancy into a positive and am using my available time to achieve one of my dreams - to walk the Pennine Way. I will be doing this alone but if others are happy to join me then I am more than happy to share my experiences. If you prefer the armchair approach, you can follow me on this blog. Is this madness? Am I fit enough? Will I be scared? Lonely? Lost? Wet? There is only one way to find out.....

Only one day to go and then I'm off. I have not been holidaying ever on my own. This is actually the first time I have called it a "holiday". Somehow it does not seem quite like a holiday as such - more a mini adventure. I am really ready to go now as I am tired of talking and ready for action - in moderation of course you understand - but action all the same. Anyway, lists have been made and pinned to the fridge and the back pack is packed and ready to lift. It has little in it and it is still heavier than I hoped for. It is very comfortable though and I am leaving behind some things to be taken up next wekend when my husband and children are due to ... read more

Now just over a week to go. All booked and ready to go. Thought I'd put a list of the key elements of what I have chosen to take with me: 1. Boots - probably the most important piece of kit I went for the Scarpa Mistral GTX (url=http://www.scarpa.co.uk/Products/Product.asp?ProductId=113) Really comfy apart from first few days when the upper cuffs rubbed the inside of my ankles. Didn't take any time to break in and have been wearing them in really wet weather - they have held up so well. They will become a true friend on this trip I feel. 2. Back Pack - had to get one that was as light as possible and managed on my first try-on to purchase the amazing Osprey Talon 44L. Fits llike a glove and is really light. Won't ... read more

Still trying to get my head around this blogging stuff. I need to understand how the formatting goes. Others' blogs look really good with loads of photos and stuff on them. I am not sure if this can be formatted in quite the same way but I really need to get it sorted soon as day of the trek starts very soon. I leave London on 4th July and then start off from Edale on the 5th. I have allowed myself a fairly generous 21 / 22 days to complete with only one day off completely. I have on my plan towards the end, broken some of the very long hard sloggers down to a combination of 8 miles and 13 miles to give me some slack. So I have really committed to this trek now. ... read more

Ooooh I really have done it now - only just gone and set up a donation page with Virgin! Yikes I really have to do it now!!! But I have chosen Macmillan as my cause and think if anyone out there has experienced their kindness and support, then they would agree it is a good choice. So here is my giving page please, please do log on and donate. I have set £1000 as my target. Mmmm possibly aiming too high but then again how else can we achieve if we do not have a target. Please help me out and donate small or large - it all helps!!!... read more

Ok - have now told work collegues and they keep asking jow the planning is going. Need to sort out the good cause. Have a soft spot for Macmilllan. Checked their web site and they are well equiped for fundraisers. Possibly thinking of changing to September as time is tight to sort out my plans. Alas as I will be between jobs I may have an offer that would put this plan on hold. However for time being it is still on course and no sign of any offers on the horizon.... read more

Hi This is my first short and introductory entry. I feel I really need to make a start on this blog as a good motivator because it would be easy to not do "it" if no one knows that I want to do "it". Now I have made a statement it is official and not doing "it" will be public step down. "It" is the Pennine Way, early July 2011. I have only just decided and I will need some real planning so I will just have to get my skates on.... read more
