ALOMAS

To Italy and beyond! For the next 6 months I will be living and working in Biella, Italy as an au pair. I plan to pack as much travelling into these 6 months as possible and I have decided to document my experience for friends, family and anyone else who wishes to read about my adventures. Feel free to leave comments and suggestions on places I should visit, I would love to hear your thoughts. Enjoy!

or in English "a lifetime isn't enough for Rome". For those of you who have been there, you probably agree with this statement. Besides the long list of archeological sights and museums, there is something eye-catching around every corner. Whether it be one of Rome's gigantic monuments, or one of the MANY churches or statues, or just the beauty of people-watching in a place that's so cultured and alive, this city has it all. If a lifetime isn't enough for Rome, then 3 days DEFINITELY isn't enough, but we tried our best to see as much as possible in a small amount of time. I did this trip with one of my university friends, Ciara, who is also living in Europe as au pair. She was a great travel buddy as we were both very anxious ... read more

It was a long, hard road, but I did eventually get there. To Cinque Terre, that is. Let me explain... As I've come to learn about the Italian train system, it can be very unreliable. This is the case especially when taking the Regional train, the slow train that stops in every single small village. This said, Cinque Terre is not at all easy to get to considering its rural geographical location on towering seaside cliffs, making arrival possible only by car or by Regional (as opposed to intercity and eurostar which travel mainly to big cities) train. Also, as I've come to learn about Northern Italy, the weather can be very unreliable. February and March graced us with sunshine and 20+ degree weather while April is giving nothing but cold rain. Knowing this and having ... read more

Upon arriving to the outskirts of venice, whether by plane, train or automobile, you reach a certain point where you can go no further. You leave these mainstream modes of transport behind you and you begin your adventure as pedestrian extraordinaire. From the train station, you cross the bridge over Canal Grande. You start to walk down a slightly narrower street, and then you cross another bridge, much smaller than the last one. The next road is even narrower, and the bridge even smaller. This pattern continues until you find yourself in the middle of a fairytale. You are LOST in a paradise of winding canals and impossibly stunning architecture, both centuries old. But you soon learn that lost in Venice is the ONLY way to be in Venice. Follow the sea of fanny packs and ... read more

I'm now just over two months into my life in Italy as au pair, and time is beginning to pass way too fast. I can't believe it's been three weeks since I broke my wrist, sentencing me to a month without driving. Two months ago I would have begged for this sentence, as (if you remember) i dreaded every day I had to drive standard alongside these crazy Italian drivers. However, these past three weeks have made me appreciate the freedom I had when I could drive. Surprisingly though, I still managed to get out and about thanks to some lovely friends who offered a lift as well as the (slightly unreliable) public transportation. My weekends as of late have been jam packed with friends and food. Shortly after coming back from Switzerland I met a ... read more

I'm not talking about rotisserie chicken, I'm talking about a log house in the Swiss alpes. I've just returned back to Biella after 5 days in Saas Fee/Saas Grund, Switzerland! The family had invited me to join them on this trip before I even arrived in Italy, meaning I'd been looking forward to this trip since November! Every year, they do a house swap and often they choose mountain destinations, ideal for family ski trips! It's such a fantastic way to travel, as you pay nothing for your accomodation (you just have to trust complete strangers in your home). A lot of families in the house swap community have second homes which they generally use for swapping purposes. We arrived in the late evening to the coziest little chalet. The fire was already going and dinner ... read more

This week started off with a BANG. The bang being food poisoning (Samantha insists that it was the bug that's been going around, but I'm convinced otherwise). I won't go into too much detail about how awful it was, but it left me pretty much out of commission for 2 days (one day of being sick and a second recovering), and has made me fear eating. How can I fear eating in Italy of all places? I curse my delicate stomach that freaks out at anything out of the ordinary. Hopefully I can train it to MAN UP in the next few months... Just a small bump in the road, I got over it pretty quickly and the rest of the week flew by. The days are starting to go by faster which must mean that ... read more

In the week since my last entry, I haven't been to Rome or Florence or Venice. I've been here in Biella adjusting to life in a new place with new people. On tuesday I started my au pair duties which mostly involve being a chauffeur. On tuesday morning it took me 15 minutes to get out of the driveway. During those 15 minutes of frustration I couldn't understand why anyone would EVER want to drive stick (in fact, this is something I'll never understand). I practiced for about an hour before I had to head into town to get Gaia. In that hour I angered A LOT of Italian drivers. I stalled in busy roundabouts and at green lights and at stop signs...just about everywhere, causing all the traffic behind me to stand idle. I really ... read more

no parlo italiano

Since arriving in Biella 3 days ago, I've learned a few key phrases such as Mi chiamo Alison (my name is Alison), dove il bagno (where is the bathroom) and Mangio una mandarina (I'm eating a mandarine). This, however, can only get you so far in a conversation, so I mostly just say "no parlo italiano". After my 9 hour layover in London after an overnight flight without sleep, I was delighted to be greeted at the house by two smiling faces, Jacapo (13) and Gaia (6). It was such a warm welcome which involved homemade pizza made by the 13 year old. I don't know any kid his age in Canada who could do that, so in my opinion that's pretty darn cool. For those of you who know me well, you know that pizza ... read more
