| 18th December 2009 Bob Cammett | Brief Foray - From: Sinai: A Brief Foray into Egypt and Back (Barely) into Israel Dear Aladdine, The entry title brief,is rather oxymoronic-nothing you have seen,or done seems brief. What tales y0ou will have to tell, upon your return to The States. You are a remarkable person. Stay well. Your Friend, Bob Cammett |
| 23rd November 2009 Bob Cammet | Where isn't There a Road - From: Walking in Bohemia: Where Isn't There A Road? Dear Aladdine, Well, you certainly,in thiis trek: Have given new meaning to the Frost ending, where the narrator says: "I took the path less taken, and it has made all the difference." Stay well. Your Friend, Bob Cammett |
| 11th October 2009 anonymous | - From: Pictures! The photos are beautiful and amazing! My favorite is a shot of the power lines over tibet with the backdrop of a valley and mountains entering and exiting a large white cloud. What type of camera do you have? The quality looks very good. |
| 11th October 2009 anonymous | - From: Berlin: A Quick Visit "The company that produces the coating is the same that produced the gas used in the Nazi gas chambers." Wow. Makes you speechless doesn't it? There is a sociology/economics class that could develop based around that one fact. You are a busy bee! Museums, bus trips and books, oh my! |
| 28th September 2009 Bob Cammett | Berlin - From: Berlin: A Quick Visit Dear Aladdine, Well, your city tour, upon reflection,of your arduous treks-was a breeze. So nice to be strolling leisurely this time. I imagine the surviving architechture is fabulous. Take care. Stay well. Your Friend, Bob Cammett |

| 22nd September 2009 Jan | Hi - From: Copenhagen: Casinos are Not ATMs My partner owns a hotel in Copenhagen,1/2 block from the train station. It used to be a whore house but it's now a hotel run by his two sons who are Afgani. I've been they're a couple of times in the last few years. Ie love the town but the weather is lousy in the early spring or late fall. The food is great especially the herring and the beer is wonderful. I've never seen as many drunk people at 8 am as in the train station in Copenhagen. Continue having a great adventure. |
| 15th September 2009 Bob Cammett | Tivoli Gardens - From: Copenhagen: Casinos are Not ATMs Dear Aladdine, I believe I read,or heard that: When he was conceiving his theme park,Walt Disney modelled Disneyland,or The Tivoli Gardens. Maybe that was an urban legend though. Stay well. Your Friend, Bob Cammett |
| 11th September 2009 Bob Cammett | Hamlet's Castle - From: Copenhagen: Casinos are Not ATMs Dear Aladdine, In reality,it was not what Shakespeare conjured for the masses. BNut, I am sure spell-binding nonetheless. Stay well. Your Friend, Bob Cammett |
| 5th September 2009 Jaimee | running commentary - From: Copenhagen: Casinos are Not ATMs Response as I read: -Since "A [person's] house is their castle", can you bring me back a Fountain for my backyard? In exhange, I'll send you money to get your hair done at "Aladdin's". -Muggings happen all over the world. It is not safe to carry large amounts of fudge at any one time. You were correct to eat it all at once- lessen the temptation. Should this happen again in the future and you are approached by a would-be-thief, experts recommend throwing one piece of fudge on the ground to distract them, stuff the rest in your mouth to free up your hands, and then promptly run away. (Or, waddle away....) -Oh, good, just got to the part about "not actually being muggers in the alley....no need to worry... JUST junkies and prostitutes". Oh yeah, "Just!" Fantastic. ALADDINE!!!!! -If at first you don't succeed, walk on to the next Casino and try again! Remember, unlike and better than ATMS, there are NO hidden fees with slot machines! |
| 2nd September 2009 EMILY JAMES | Copenhagen - From: Copenhagen: Casinos are Not ATMs "the Swedish claimed to trace their royal family back to the grandson of Noah, so the Danes wanted to keep up." Charles the Second of England ordered portraits of all his ancestors dating back to Moses..some obliging artist gave him what he requested...all ancestors having same nose as Charles...these portraits hang in Holyrood Castle in Edinburgh.. |
| 2nd September 2009 Bob Cammett | pictures - From: Pictures! Dear Aladddine, Well, here is the attemot,to view your photos. I would like to thank you for the opportunity to follow along on your trek. Stay well. Your Friend, Bob |
| 1st September 2009 Jan Joroff | Hi - From: Sweden: Hiking in the Arctic I love your travel journals and especially the one about Tibet. Would love to see some photo's to get a better mental picture of your exciting travels around the globe. When are you coming back home? I'd love to see you and talk to you about your adventures. We will be with the family Oct 10 in NYC. Love, Jan |
| 28th August 2009 Bob Cammett | Hiking - From: Sweden: Hiking in the Arctic Dear Aladdine, Well, now on to the Scandinvanian Countries. I spoke with your mother to-day: to find out how you were, and get the coordinates-Yes,I lost them again. Ahe had a wonderful time with you,and I told her how I admire your courage. Stay well. Your Friend, Bob Cammett |
| 27th August 2009 Train Tove from Sweden | I've made up my mind - From: The Annurpurna Circuit: Wow (and a little bit of ow) I'm so glad that I met you on the train from Stockholm, so I had a chance to ask you all kinds of questions about the circuit, and then read about your whole adventure. I've just ordered a guidebook on trekking in Nepal and I've also checked how much the flight tickets are. So I really think that I will go to do this trek! Thank's for giving me the adress to your blog, it's been a pleasure reading about everything... |
| 31st July 2009 Emily James | envy stops here - From: Tibetan Travels and Travails I read the first blogs with a bit of envy. Lived vicariously. No more. Glad I was not on this adventure. You are on your own, girl. Positive attitudes, unmarked meds, nope, definitely not for me. I would prefer the entourage.(Sikkim) |
| 31st July 2009 Jaimee | What's Cookin'? Could it be you? - From: Tibetan Travels and Travails Considering the food and the spiritual-related purpose of this tour, seems there was reasonable justification for the reemergence of the Ancient Rites of Cannabilism. Perhaps the lack of a bath first or gross-decon was why it didn't happen.... Who knows? As the non-swami follower, you might have been saved by the lingering aftermath of the sleeping bag! |
| 30th July 2009 Bob Cammett | Tibet Trek - From: Tibetan Travels and Travails Good to know; You are well, and safe. You have had the kind of experiences, few of us can dream. Continue to stay well. Your Friend Bob Cammett |
| 5th July 2009 Darrell | - From: Mount Everest Base Camp: Is That It? The very old comment from the 19 year old is just payment for your comment about the old 41 year old. haha You should post some of your pictures on the site here. |
| 5th July 2009 Alice Tracy | Rhododendron forest - From: Trekking in Sikkim: A Winter Wonderland A rhododendron forest??? it sounds so beautiful! |
| 24th June 2009 BobCammet | Ecelsior - From: Mount Everest Base Camp: Is That It? You made it. I admire you for the fortitude you have shown. Think of all the adventures you have had. Enough for a dozen lifetimes. Stay well. |
| 24th June 2009 Emily James | What baby? - From: Mount Everest Base Camp: Is That It? Is this the biting 2 year old you help care for? Would you rather tax your lungs and knee or your patience? |
| 3rd June 2009 Bob Cammett | Bhutan - From: Bhutan I saw,on television, were Bhutan is considered, one of the new world wonders. The palace and environs. Did you feel as if: You'd found Shangri-La. Stay well. Your Friend, Bob |
| 19th May 2009 Bob Cammett | Winter wonderland - From: Trekking in Sikkim: A Winter Wonderland "Sleigh Bells ring..." I reckon the last few months have ruined any thought of: Hiking The Appalchian Trail. After al you have seen,it would pale in comaprison. We are forecast to reach 80+ and perhaps 90 Degrees on Thursday and Friday. Stay well. Your Friend, Bob |
| 18th May 2009 Cliff Schecter | Glad I Was Told About This... - From: India (surprise!) Hey Laddy, I have become a humble follower of your journey. Just found out about the blog from the fam...Will read religiously, and as ironically it is exactly 10 years (this June) since I set off around Thailand, the Philippines, Japan and China with a good friend...ahh, so much fun to get old. But now, at least, I can live vicariously through you. Have a great time and be mindful of those touchy feely types on those long bus trips :).... Cliff |
| 7th May 2009 Bob Cammett | India - From: India (surprise!) Glad to know you are still 'hanging in there'. It sounds spectacular, and you have only started you Indian trek. Please take care. Stay well. Your Friend, Bob |
| 6th May 2009 Kevin | Vital items - From: India (surprise!) "my Red Sox baseball cap" What's important, after all? (Incidentally, at last report the Red Sox were 5-0 against the Yankees so far this year.) "I will be traveling with a guide and cook, and perhaps a person also to manage the horses who will carry all the bags/equipment." For the first time in your life (that I know of), you have your own entourage! |
| 6th May 2009 Mike | jeeps, horses and smart growth - From: India (surprise!) You cannot hide an MIT technie...horses, high mountains, switchback roads, Tibetans, smushed bugs, an entire new culture and the technie notices "smart growth" strategies. A horse will never equal a yak for storytelling. |
| 4th May 2009 Alice Tracy | I just didn't know! - From: The Annurpurna Circuit: Wow (and a little bit of ow) Aladdine, I had no idea someone could do a trek like this! I am so glad you have had such a tremendous adventure. You are so courageous! And I am so sorry that you were ill during this undertaking but I honor your willingness to hang in there. Now I can't wait for the next installment. best, Alice |
| 27th April 2009 bridget | - From: Buses, Taxis and Motorcycles - Oh My! baby bubbles are SO much better than sweaty man-hands! glad you latched on to a savior and prudently kept w/her on the next leg of your trip! spring is totally here in boston now, warm sunny days and still-coolish nites. not quite like your weather yet but we're working on it. can't wait to read more but am still missing u. B |
| 25th April 2009 Bob Cammett | One added comment - From: Buses, Taxis and Motorcycles - Oh My! I just thought: about our first trip,to England, and navigating the roads, while one is on the 'wrong'side. My Dad was drivingand Mom was in the shotgun seat. Well, she was most vocal, regarding his driving, and the nearness of the side of the road. Well,we all survived. Stay well. |
| 24th April 2009 Emily James | motorcycles and amulets - From: Buses, Taxis and Motorcycles - Oh My! Maybe the amulet is to protect you on moving vehicles and not against bad food or water. You might want to keep it on. ANy sightings of the Vestal Virgin in Kathmandu? Do the young Tibetans wear traditional garb or is it jeans and western attire? Emily |
| 24th April 2009 hanh | WTF aladdine??? - From: The Annurpurna Circuit: Wow (and a little bit of ow) i could have billed 2.4 hours, but instead i read your post. good stuff. also, i think what you're trying to say is that 40 year olds are pretty friggin old and shouldn't be allowed to go about with the hiking and such. i mean, look at namgyal--he didn't get very far. |
| 23rd April 2009 Bob Cammett | Buses, taxis & Motorcyles - From: Buses, Taxis and Motorcycles - Oh My! You certauinly have had the adventure of a lifetime-Several in fact.We are about to go; From Spring to Summer,in 24 hrs. Over the week0end,we will have record temperatures-nearly so,in the eighties. It is 53 right now. Stay well. Your Friend, Bob Cammett |
| 23rd April 2009 Jaimee | Oh my indeed! - From: Buses, Taxis and Motorcycles - Oh My! Oh my! I was getting motion sick just reading this. You need a fly swatter to deal with annoying seatmates. A little "whack, whack" now and then to keep them on their side of the seat. That or a stun gun. That could be entertaining for everyone- liven up the trips a bit. Keep on traveling Ali! |
| 20th April 2009 bridget | - From: The Annurpurna Circuit: Wow (and a little bit of ow) hey kid! glad to hear you're still trekkin'. have finally made it past tax season myself and have a few days off and your message came in to my home computer so as a bonus i was able to catch up on your adventures. sounds like by the time you get home you'll be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! or at least take mt washington by storm. take care of yourself, stay well and where do u want me to send those AAA batteries? |
| 17th April 2009 Bob Cammett | Glad you're sll right - From: The Annurpurna Circuit: Wow (and a little bit of ow) Dear Aladdine, After not seeing any posting, omn the blog, was concerned you fell down a crevass. You are seeing many things, which folks(Americans) don't have the time,or initiative to do. Stay well. |
| 8th April 2009 Jeff and janni | Alladine, envy - From: Setting Off for a Trek (take 2) Of course we read this with joy and relish - but no hot dogs :-) Those moments with nothing to do, no outside stimulation, Aye, Lassie, 'tis meditiation that calls thee'. That's a quote from the Dali O'lama. Sounds so wonderful and glad you are well. Just in case you hadn't heard the BoSox won the opener and Beckett looked great (except a soft 3rd inning) Pedroia pops a homer at his first at bat and Varitek pops one too just to let everyone know "i'm still hee-uh" Trek on and be there. Namaste, jeff and janni |
| 7th April 2009 Mike | - From: Setting Off for a Trek (take 2) Aladdine, You are -- I expect -- in the middle of somewhere, seeing great sights I hope. I wonder if that elderly 42 year old has had to carry you--if so, I hope you shared the chocolate. |
| 5th April 2009 Irena | Found you! - From: Setting Off for a Trek (take 2) Sounds like a real adventure! Please keep the blogs coming. Myk is visiting in Switzerland in a few weeks - and we have your spot all warmed up... xox. -Irena |
| 30th March 2009 Hanh | Snacks - From: Setting Off for a Trek (take 2) Make sure to pack some canned sardines, cigarettes and a beer in case it starts to get cold and rainy and you want to feel completely miserable. |
| 25th March 2009 Charles | Baby carrots - From: Setting Off for a Trek (take 2) Aladdine, will you have to trek in a supply of baby carrots, or are those available at the guest houses? It sounds like you're having a wonderful adventure. Charles. |
| 24th March 2009 Darielle | about pride, but NOT falling - From: Setting Off for a Trek (take 2) gee Al, that old guy-- in his 40's yet--couldn't possibly be in good enough shape to carry your bag! So looking forward to that story... Enjoy, stay warm, and love to all when you get back to Jawalkhel. Don't know if you will get this en route, but if so and you know your future route/ direction, do relay for potential monument proximity. d |
| 24th March 2009 Bob Cammett | Your First Trek? - From: Setting Off for a Trek (take 2) If you havebeen on anything, that is not considered a trek-arduous journey,so far,as Mr. Griimwig opined,"I'll eat my head with my hat on it." Stay well. |
| 24th March 2009 Emily James | Backpack - From: Setting Off for a Trek (take 2) I don't believe 42 is considered old anymore...even in the Tibetan culture. I suspect the guide could easily carry your pack, probably carries heavy burdens on a regular basis. Can't wait to hear about the trek. |
| 24th March 2009 Alice Tracy | What a wonderful event! - From: Another Pilgrimage and an Outing Aladdine, I am so enjoying hearing about your trip! It is so extraordinary to be able to see the country so up close like that. And what you are seeing and living (aside from the cold and the balky toilet) sounds like such a new and different world. I am struck by this notion of the stone Ganesh growing out of the rock. Do you think it really does grow bigger -- perhaps erosion makes it appear bigger? Or is it just a myth? And I am pleased to hear that you have a Kindle -- I thought, if she's carrying all those books, they must be awfully heavy and where does she have room for clothes?! Best, and waiting for the next installment -- Alice |
| 18th March 2009 bridget | - From: Another Pilgrimage and an Outing HAH!! amulet indeed.... too bad you're feeling poorly, hope it improves soon, sounds like that amulet of yours might need a booster shot! you do indeed paint very pretty pictures of the sights you're seeing but am curious - are u picking up the language or do u always have an interpreter at your side? must be rather difficult to communicate at times or do many speak english? am eagerly awaiting next installment to see if you ever get to tibet. still missing you kid, B |
| 18th March 2009 Kevin | Stick around - From: Another Pilgrimage and an Outing Hey, if you decide to stick around in Nepal till July, you'll catch the total eclipse - I might even join you! |
| 13th March 2009 Ben | all those books! - From: One Month this seems like the perfect time to get an amazon kindle. must be crazy carrying so much around. which books? |
| 13th March 2009 bridget | - From: One Month glad to see there's been no more issues w/illness, blisters or sunburn - that amulet must be working, assuming you're still wearing it that is! (or you're just not sharing the other stuff any more) whichever, am still loving your stories and am eagerly awaiting the next installment. stay safe! write more! B :) |
| 11th March 2009 Tina Rhea | Festival - From: One Month At least they were throwing only water. There's a town in Spain where they throw tomatoes by the truckloads. Have fun & stay safe! |
| 11th March 2009 Bob Cammett | March 11th - From: One Month It seems as if you are having the time of your life. But,there is still much more to see. I hope you don't run out of journals. Papyrus is a laborious element,on which to write. Stay well |
| 10th March 2009 Hanh | re: toilets - From: Where I Actually Am you can manually flush with very little water (depending, of course, on the size of your turds, etc.) western-style flushing toilets basically use water and gravity to flush. you can accomplish the same with a small bucket/large can of water poured from a decent height. be careful of backsplash. |
| 9th March 2009 bridget | - From: Where I Actually Am we're not gonna recognize u by the time u return if u continue to sit on rooftops, lolling about all day reading books, you'll be as brown as a nut. i'm now willing to lay good money down on the bet that you bought stock in suntan lotion before leaving the US. (sorry, is my jealousy showing?) u are not only edumacating me about a part of the world i have never and probably WILL never see but you write a damn good story girl!! was quite disappointed that the power was about to go down, i could read more, can't wait for the next installment. hope the cold is all better now. B |
| 8th March 2009 Emily James | Lama Visit - From: Where I Actually Am Keep the amulet on |
| 8th March 2009 Bob Cammett | March 8 posting - From: Where I Actually Am Your guide book, should not be used for a medical journal. Stick with NEJM or JAMA. Stay well. |
| 4th March 2009 bridget | hey girl! - From: First Days in Nepal i've just finished reading all your writings and have finally caught up w/u in nepal. my jealousy knows no bounds. am greatly relieved to hear you're eating chocolate again. i thought you had caught some strange but serious asian disease or something. will try to read more frequently so i don't get left behind in nepal. miss u kid, B |
| 2nd March 2009 Bob Cammett | Nepal - From: First Days in Nepal Glad all seems well with you. We are having another snowstorm-I have around 9". Stay well. |
| 2nd March 2009 Jaimee | Motorbikes and chocolate - From: First Days in Nepal And to think you are there and missing all the East Coast Snow! Mama is still visiting me. One more day. Could you not have posted the part about motorcycles for one more day? Just one? She's in a complete state of nervous collapse now and may not be able to go home. However, she seems much better upon learning that your taste for chocolate has returned. We were very worried and arranging a Red Cross Medevac for you- it was hard to explain to the insurance company: "What's the problem?" "She doesn't want chocolate!" "What?" "Hurry!!! It's serious!!!!" |
| 2nd March 2009 Kevin | Bus - From: First Days in Nepal "your knees will get pretty cramped" YOUR knees got pretty cramped!? I think i will avoid that bus entirely (should the opportunity arise). |
| 25th February 2009 Alice Tracy | National Museum - From: Siem Reap Aladdine, What a wonderful trip! So exciting. I am green with envy. The Freer and Sackler have a long-standing relationship with the National Museum and our head of conservation has helped them build their metals conservation lab. He did a slide show (well, it was probably PowerPoint, but you get the idea) about his work there and I so wanted to go see Cambodia. The trees were what impressed me the most with their big gnarly trunks and their efforts to take over the temples. I am anxious to hear more! Best, Alice |
| 24th February 2009 MViray | Re: Siem Reap - From: Siem Reap I can't believe you lost your taste for chocolate. That's nearly sacreligious. Totally agree, by the way, about the gorgeous faces of the Bayon. And yeah. Not drinking the 'yellow water' goes right alongside 'don't eat yellow snow.' |
| 23rd February 2009 Bob Cammett | Feb.23 - From: Siem Reap The Plague! I am afraid that is a little too adventurous for my blood. You are a freeless person, and I wish you continued Good Luck. Stay well |
| 22nd February 2009 Bob Cammett | Your 2nd entry - From: First Day in Cambodia You ought to recall that-Boston's streets are still defined by the cow paths. Even with The Big Dig all through-we think! |
| 19th February 2009 Hanh | - From: First Day in Cambodia oh, i read "tuk-tuk" wrong, and was thinking that $7 was REALLLY cheap even for cambodian prositutes. btw, crossing the streets in vietnam is very similar, so you should practice now. |
| 17th February 2009 jeff | Hey Alladine - From: First Day in Cambodia Just checked in on your blogette ;-) Sounds like you are already having some adventure. Fried bananas/plantains are heaven, I agree. Stay cool!. Big Papi announced today that everyone should be tested for steroids, across the board and anyone found positive should be banned for a year. He is the Big Papi, no doubt. Duval Patrick wants to introduce a driving chip tax instead of a .50 gas tax hike. The chip would be part of the inspection sticker and you are charged for how many miles you drive. Lost of orwellian complaints but its actually not a bad idea given the amount of infrastructure that needs funding. it will also encourage alot of public transportation. As well as fake inspection stickers ! That's all from the hood. Cheers, jeff |
| 15th February 2009 Hanh | - From: First Days Yay!!! Very glad to hear your trip is officially started and you have arrived safely. Don't worry about missing out on those movies you really wanted to see--Frodo drops the ring in the volcano in one, and in the others, Hugh Grant learns not to be such a tool bag and then finds that the love of his life was really right there in front of him. And please, no more descriptions of your trip that start with "I met a very nice man from Canada...." |
| 14th February 2009 Tito | Welcome! - From: First Days Hi Aladdine, i have accidentaly ran into your blog. Welcome to our lovely country and enjoy your stay. We are very friendly people and like foreigners (even Americans) Tito |
