We are at the airport and waiting for our flight! Hope we get some sleep tonight. It's going to be one heck of a time change for us - 18 hours ahead of Indiana, 21 hours ahead of California. That said, since we are leaving at 7:45 at night and our flight is about 13 hours long, and since we are flying across the International Date Line, we will skip February 15th entirely. So, for those of you who get to experience the 15th, I hope it's great! Attached us a pic of us together as we left our home in warm and sunny Vacaville today.... read more

I love the Dr. Seuss book, "Oh, the Places You'll Go." There are so many situations in life when lines from that book are encouraging. So, since I had not yet figured out how to post pics to this blog, I chose a picture of one of my favorite lines to practice with in this early morning post. And, since today is Valentine's Day, I tossed another one in of Aaron and I skiing on Valentine's Day many moons ago. Guess we tend to travel on this weekend! Our flight from San Francisco to New Zealand leaves tonight at 7:45. We've enjoyed a wonderful few days relaxing here in sunny, warm Northern California. I can't believe we are leaving tonight! Doesn't seem real. Trying to stretch out and rest this morning since tonight we will be ... read more

If you have ever traveled internationally, you know that one of the most important considerations when packing electronics is to determine what type of plug will fit the local wall outlets and if you need to have a voltage converter. Now, while I know that the discovery of electricity cannot be contributed to one guy flying a kite in a lightning storm, I do not know who decided what the plugs on electrical appliances should look like and what voltage each country should run on. And, why didn't all those folks sit down together and come up with one standard plug and one standard voltage that works for everyone? I was pondering this in the shower tonight (that's where I do my best thinking, of course, don't you?) as I was thinking about what I have ... read more

Many people have asked us why we have chosen to travel to New Zealand. Well, New Zealand was added to our bucket list on Thanksgiving 2010. We were still living in California at that time. Grandma Marj's dementia/alzheimers was advancing, and we knew that taking her to Indiana with us for Christmas wasn't going to be possible. So, we stayed in California for Thanksgiving that year, and took her to spend the day with her long-time friends Frank and Carol Walsh. Also at the Thanksgiving Dinner that day were Frank and Carol's relatives who were in the process of moving back to California after spending several years living in New Zealand. At that point, we had never really given any thought to ever traveling to New Zealand. It simply hadn't ever come up. But, after spending ... read more

It's hard to believe our trip is almost here! We have waited years for this bucket list trip to New Zealand. I remember planning it out for the first time in the Fall of 2011. We had recently moved to Indiana to take care of Aaron's two grandmothers. It was a bit of a sad time, moving away from the home and the friends we loved in California, and we needed something to look forward to. We were so excited about the possibility of going to New Zealand in early 2012. It didn't take long, though, for it to become apparent that a nearly month-long trip to the other side of the world wasn't a good idea considering the health status of the grannies. Don't get me wrong, we have traveled since then to some amazing ... read more
