Greetings from Chicago! I am a high school senior, and currently taking a World History class. To mention a bit about myself, I am Latina and a Jehovah's Witness. I am excited to be in the last year of high school and look forward to starting my college life in the near future. Taking World History will be exciting this year because I can get the opportunity to find out what is happening outside of the U.S.Many of the things that I have learned are related to the U.S., so learning about different parts of the world will be very interesting. Taking this class is important because it will give me a better outlook on the world. I can learn about different cultures, how different countries distinguish themselves from the U.S, and how the world has changed as a whole through the passing of time. Let's begin the magic carpet ride around the world!!

. RIHLA #27– Explore the student activities/clubs offered at the college you are planning to attend (or ones that you interested in) and describe 1-3 student groups that you would consider joining and WHY. The point of this is to start thinking about what your particular fight is…what are you most passionate about? 1.Cooking Club This club allows any student interested in cooking to learn or teach. I am considering joining this so that I can learn to be independent from my mothers cooking and to prevent myself from buying take-out everyday. Also, the club does not focus on one type of food. Rather, cuisines from different cultures will be included. 2. Hispanic Student Dental Association This association is a community of Hispanic graduate and undergraduate students that are persuing a career in dentistry. This group ... read more

Create a TOP TEN list of the best experiences you've had or things that you like about UIC College Prep. Each idea must be expressed in complete sentences Note that these experiences are not listed from best o worst. 1. Friends. I learned alot about the friends I've made here. I even learned about the friends that I already knew before starting high school. We have cried together, fallen together, laughed, and have ben embarrased together. 2. AP classes Not many people can say they have taken AP classes, but I can. I cannot say they are easy; rather I can say I have been pushed to my limits. Even though my laziness often gets in my way, I try to get back in the game. 3. Meeting Amazing staff Fortunately, I have always been ... read more

Describe the adventures of your Spring Break (MINIMUM of 8 sentences) Q4 starts the day you return – what things are you most looking forward to in Q4? This will be your last opportunity to make an impression on the colleges you are about to attend – how do you want to end senior year academically? How do you plan on doing this? Spring break. This spring break I did not really do anything. Sadly, I caught a cold and spent a lot of time at home. Nevertheless, I was able to spend time with my niece Giselle. During the first years of life, learning is essential, so I try to teach her to count, distinguish colors, and learn about God and his purpose of humans. I also attended the annual Conmemoration of Jesus Christ's ... read more

As we are nearing the end of the quarter, it will be valuable to engage in some motivation to end the year well. For this RIHLA: Give a shoutout (AND EXPLAIN WHY) to 2-3 senior Firecats that you think are performing well academically or in class for some other Noble reason. To the UICCP senior class of 2012, Our journey has been long and rough. From going to school in the Forum, breaking through 21, losing friends, seeing Mr. Sicat make a difference in CPS, losing some teachers, and having a rough last yeat. Although these are the last few months, this end is the start of a new beginning. In a few years, we will not be the same firecats. We will be those people who we have searched for. I would like to take ... read more

Taking Chances. How can you get somewhere if you don’t cross your own boundary? Sometimes we are scared to do things that are foreign to us. I know I am. Sometimes it’s laziness that gets in the way or plain fear. Yesterday(March 2012), someone taught me a lesson I thought only I could teach myself. I am a senior in high school. Like everyone else, I’m trying to discover what’s underneath these layers of skin, the books, the shell that I hide myself in. Being a reserved person, I struggle with situations where I am faced with the idea of being judged or laughed at. Yesterday, I unwillingly faced my fear. A friend sang to me a song that he wrote. Some people think of this as something sweet. As I saw his eyes penetrating through ... read more

What are some of the reasons that books are banned in high schools? Do you agree with any of these reasons? Explain. What reasons do you NOT agree with (this means that you think high school students SHOULD be able to read about these topics). Why? Who do you think pressures teachers on what they should or shouldn't teach? If one wanted to fight against book censorship, explain at least one way in which they could do so. Any other additional thoughts or comments? Unfortuntely, I was never aware of book banning in high schools. This is because, as the article says, banning books is not acknowledged by the media and remains unreported to the public. Some of the reasons that books are banned are because they talk about sex, homosexuality, drinking, drug abuse, and ... read more
