Marriage, weddings, and divorces were much different in Roman times than they are now. Marriages were arranged between men in their mid-twenties and young teen aged girls. Marriages were arranged simply to improve families wealth/social class. Marriage was also, under law, only allowed to be between two roman citizens. If a man and woman wanted to be married, they had to be citizens. There were many restrictions on marriages. Citizens could not marry prostitutes or actors, officials were not allowed to marry local women, soldiers could only be married under certain circumstances, and women who were divorced for being unfaithful were not allowed to be re-married.
