It's almost a week now since the theatre project with Jana Sanskriti (JS) so I've had time to unwind a bit and muse over the experience. And what an experience........... When I first arrived in Badu - a suburb (though it's more like a village) just outside Kolkota where JS is based - I had a vague idea of what I was letting myself in for. I knew it would be a fortnight of drama training and activities using "theatre of the oppressed" (TO) techniques which I'd come across briefly before through working with a couple of drama therapists (see 2nd blog for an explanation of TO). I hadn't thought much about who 'd be working with though. I assumed it would be mainly Indians from JS and a smallish group of participants. I had a ... read more

Well, I'm still here, nearing the end of the theatre project. It's been hectic, funny, surprising, tiring and probably the most demanding thing I've done in a while. Anyway, internet access is not easy at the mo so I'll write more in Mumbai. Someone is waiting to use the ... read more

Had a coffee and a strawberry smoothie in Mumbai airport in celebration of Christmas Day listening to some carols in Hindi over the tannoy. Was expecting a full-on hassley arrival but it was loads calmer than expected. Got to Kokata feeling surprisingly calm and rested in spite of very little sleep. Was greeted at the airport by some people from Jana Sanskriti - the theatre group I'm staying with at the mo. A friendly bunch. Also some fellow participants from Germany and France. After stopping off to change money, we had some tea with Sanjoy and Sima who lead the group - my third curry of the ... read more

This time tomorrow I'll be almost on the flight to Mumbai. Weird thought. Just sorting last minute stuff at the mo and drinking a G&T. Have had a hectic few days here on the island but great to spend time with family and friends before the off. Am feeling relatively calm but legs keep jigging every now and then in excited anticipation. Wahey! I'm going.............. read more
