Asia January 3rd 2012

We left Darwin at 5.00 p.m. The next day was spent at sea before finally sailing into Komodo Island, Indonesia on 3 Jan - early in the morning. Komodo Island is where they have Komoda Dragons – big, ugly looking lizards that stand waist-high, with poisonous drool - that simply bite their prey, let the prey run off whilst they wait until the poison kills them, before they track them down and eat them. There were a couple of small fishing villages there who sent small canoes out to the ship that was anchored off the Island. We thought it was a welcoming committee, however, “Hello - Dollar” became a very familiar phrase during this cruise. The ship wouldn’t allow anyone off unless they were on a guided tour, as it was too dangerous with the ... read more

New Year’s Day was into Darwin at 9.00 a.m. As I used to live there in 1974, thought I’d head to Smith Street (downtown), reacquaint myself with my surroundings and then go walkabout from there. Well, I got into town and I didn’t recognize a thing – was REALLY surprised. Darwin was also the hottest place out of all the places we went to – and absolutely sweltering. It was also a really boring town, not helped by everything being closed for New Year’s Day. There was nothing there apart from drunken Aborigines propping up a tree in the middle of town and I honestly wonder how I spent a couple of years there. Darwin was that boring I took exactly one photo. It does have a wave pool which I’d intended going to, but there ... read more

Asia December 28th 2011

28 Dec we left Cairns at 2.00 p.m. to sail up to the Great Barrier Reef, past Lizard Island and the Ribbon Reef Region, overnight anchored at Sherrard Island and the next day through the Torres Straight. 3 days of sailing and at sea and celebrating New Year’s. I thought going through the Great Barrier Reef would be spectacular but it poured and we didn’t even see any turquoise water - just a few islands dotted around.... read more

Asia December 26th 2011

Boxing Day was again at sea with storms due to one of the Cyclones off the coast. The nicest thing about rough seas is that you get rocked to sleep at night - we had several nights like that and it became an enjoyable way to go to sleep. 27th December saw us arriving in Cairns at 2.00 p.m. We were overnighting in Cairns but I must say I was disappointed in it. It is basically a largish country town - nothing to write home about and very much a surfy place with lots of pubs and restaurants. As most things were closed for Christmas holidays, it probably looked deader than usual. An American said to me that with the exception of Sydney, Australia is not that interesting - and I have to say I agree ... read more

Oceans and Seas December 25th 2011

Christmas eve was spent at sea and at 6.00 a.m. on Christmas Day, we arrived in Brisbane. I decided that if possible I was going to be up for every sailing into port, so this meant a 4.30 a.m. rise (I regularly saw dawn on this cruise). After all the rain and dark clouds in Sydney, it was nice to see the sunshine again in Brisbane - and phew, was it hot. I hadn’t planned any tours of Brissy having been there before, so I caught the ferrycat up the river and back for a few hours, which was enough for me in that heat. At 5.00 p.m. on the dot we sailed out of Brisbane.... read more

Oceania December 24th 2011

December/January is the typhoon/monsoon season in Asia and the northern part of Australia – and what with the bad weather that Sydney had been receiving, a lot of this cruise was dark skies, thunderstorms and rain, sprinkled with intermittent boiling days and sunshine – and lots of humidity. Each evening, I’d return to my cabin to find a different Towel animal, compliments of my Cabin Steward.... read more

Asia December 23rd 2011

Made my way to the ship on Friday, 23rdDec at 11.00 a.m. and by 12.30 p.m. I was onboard and enjoying an Embarkation lunch. We sailed at 6.00 that night amongst storms and rain in Sydney and a forecast of 2 cyclones off the coast, one off Brisbane and the other off Darwin. Even if a cyclone dissipates, it leaves big seas, so we were all wondering whether or not we'd feel the effects of these 2, or worse still run into them. We've had one weird summer this year as its rained in Sydney throughout December, January & February. So here’s a tour of the ship.... read more

Finally the day of flying home arrived and my last lot of pins and needles you know where, with an 11 hour flight plus losing a day on the way back and of course, gaining another 4 hours extra to my day. With all the rain in Honolulu it wasn't once humid, but as soon as I walked out of Sydney Airport and within 2 minutes, I was sweating my head off as it was 95% humidity and HOT - such as 41C or 106F. Thought to myself - I'm back. It's taken me another 3 days to get back to Sydney time and the first morning I woke up in my own bed, I dozily glanced over at the window and initially thought I was actually in my Hotel room in Honolulu, before realising I ... read more

North America » United States January 9th 2011

Arriving into Hawaii, this time I LOST 4 hours of my day (which made a nice change, although again took adjusting to). After all that travelling, I intended to simply spend the entire 6 days lazing by the pool in the Sheraton Hotel (which is right on Waikiki Beach) simply with my nose in a book, sunbathing. Well, as luck would have it, it rained for 5 of those days so I only got 1 day of lazing around. The remainder of the days I occupied myself with long lunches/dinners, walking around, shopping etc. Talking of food, I am not in the least bit surprised a lot of Americans are so overweight. Their meals are HUGE - I could never finish one of them and one of their favourites seems to be fries with cheese on ... read more

I also did the tourist things like see the Flamingos, the Dolphins and the Lion Cubs, plus check out the shops. On the last 2 days in Vegas I met my friend who lives there, and I went to stay at her place. She drove me to the Hoover Dam which was only half full due to L.V. having had a 7 year drought, and we had lunch along the way in Boulder City. The bridge across Hoover Dam was SO impressive with both of us admiring good engineering. In the evening we went to dinner at the Tao, a superb restaurant in the Venetian, where one of the mediocre priced bottles of Pinot Noir was $75, food was absolutely fantastic and almost worth the $200 bill, and later kicked onto the Tao Nightclub which is ... read more
