Asia January 13th 2012

Took the second day in Bangkok easy and at 4.00 p.m. on the dot, we left Bankok for Sihanoukville, Cambodia, arriving on Fri 13th at 8.00 in the morning. By now I was getting to the stage where I felt we were simply paying to see poverty, and as Cambodia was advertised as another fishing village – I didn’t bother going ashore. Interestingly, the Cambodian government insisted that everyone on board still had to pay $US90 for a Cambodian visa, even if you didn’t go ashore. A right rip off, and from what I heard, Cambodia was smelly and dirty with just another market – so I didn’t miss much. The ship departed at 5.00 that evening.... read more

The ship left at 5.00 p.m. and the following day (Wed, 11 Jan) we were into Laem Chabang, a port off Bangkok, where we were overnighting and wouldn’t be leaving until 4.00 p.m. the following day. I was looking forward to Bangkok as I’d never been there. A private van was booked to drive a group of us the 2 hour trip to Bangkok along the filthiest highway with tin shacks everywhere. We stopped for a bathroom break along the way and of course came across the usual Asian loos - just a hole in the ground. After experiencing these a common question became, is it western? In Bangkok we visited the Grand Palace where the King & Queen still resides. The Grand Palace is a real WOW factor, i.e. you walk in and the first ... read more

We left Singapore at 6.00 p.m. and the next day, 9thJan was another day at sea before arriving at Koh Samui, Thailand at 8.00 in the morning. I’d heard a lot about Koh Samuii, mainly that it was a beautiful place, so I was looking forward to photographing it. I’d also booked a tour with several other ship guests. We all met off the pier and were driving to a mummified Monk Temple – very dirty streets and tons & tons of motorbikes. When humans are mummified, their skin looks like brown leather. Next we went to a field where they had monkeys on long ropes, who climbed the palm trees and twisted the coconuts until they fell to the ground, then we were all given a drink of coconut milk. Felt very sorry for those ... read more

After the Marina Sands Hotel, I jumped on the underground and went to Little India, Clarke Quay and hit Chinatown for lunch (Singapore has the best chilli crab). Singapore is really clean as they fine you if you litter. A lot of people got off at Singapore as that was 2 weeks and one sector, so I lost a few American friends I’d made. Needless to say a lot of people also got on at Singapore for the Asia leg, another 2 weeks. This part of my cruise I was really looking forward to.... read more

I’ve been to Singapore several times before so I decided to get myself a Tourist Train pass for the day (their train system is brilliant and dead easy). I'd seen a documentary on how the spectacular Marina Sands Hotel (with an infinity pool on the roof) was built, so I wanted to visit there and photograph it as it has spectacular views.... read more

Thursday 5 Jan was spent at sea (Java Sea) and Fri, 6th we sailed into Semarang, Java, Indonesia where they put on a dancing reception for us at the Dock. Java is very Muslim, very hot and pretty dirty so I didn't bother getting off. Just spent the day by the pool cooling off. The ship allowed all the wives and children on for the Cabin Stewards, etc., so they tended to gawk when they got to the pool deck. When leaving port we saw loads of trees that had been felled - obviously cutting down their rain forest. Then a storm hit and it was that windy that the local ferry absolutely packed with people, kept getting pushed back to the dock so they had to wait until the storm passed before they could sail. ... read more

The following day (Wed, 4 Jan) we were anchored off Tanah Ampo, Bali, Indonesia arriving about 10.00 ish and not leaving until midnight. They put on a nice greeting for the ship with girls dressed in their finery greeting us at the Terminal Building, accompanied by a typical Balinese Band. However, as soon as you were outside of the Terminal you basically ran the gauntlet of being constantly pestered to buy things, kids begging, taxi guys pestering, women selling materials, etc. One woman was so persistent that she followed me up the entire road, pestering for “dollar, dollar” that eventually I said to her, I’ll give you a dollar if you’ll piss off. She understood that alright, as she did. (Cheap at the price but her plan worked). Again it was really hot in Bali, and ... read more
