I had the alarm set for 7am this morning, but we didn't get up until closer to 11am... Actually, I kept hitting the snooze button, but Rhiannon never made a movement or sound (except for some snoring). I figured eventually she'd wake up and start asking about breakfast, but that never happened. I finally gave up on the snooze, and got up to shower. When I came out, Rhiannon was still fast asleep, but I knew we had to get going or we'd waste a day in the hotel (something I never want to do). I tried several times to wake her, but the only reaction I got was that she put her pillow over her head. I said, "Rhiannon, you have to get up now, we've wasted 1/2 the day....". Her response? "No thanks, I'm ... read more

Anyone that's used the subway system of any large city can tell you that it's probably the best way to get around. Why we don't have far more cities with subways, I'll never understand. We are staying another night at the Maydrit Hotel, here in Madrid, and while it's one of the nicest and cleanest hotels I've ever stayed in, it's not exactly in a prime location. It's perhaps only a kilometer from the airport, but there are no real sights of interest, or very many restaurants within walking distance. We discovered this last night while taking a walkabout after dinner. Consulting the little map I'd picked up at the tourism bureau at the airport, I realized that while we were technically in Madrid, we'd have to spend a small fortune in cab fare or waste ... read more

After traveling for just under 23 hrs, (from the moment we left our house until we put our bags down in the hotel room) we are finally here. For the most part, the 3 flights we took to get here were rather uneventful. In fact, the 2 short flights (3 hrs from Austin to DC and 2 1/2 hrs from Brussels to Madrid) were easy and straightforward. It was the flight from DC to Brussels, however, that took a toll on our traveling mood. It started out fine, in that all of the passengers were able to board the massive 777 aircraft in time for the 6:02 pm departure time. Unfortunately, all of the luggage wasn't loaded on until nearly 6:25 pm. Once loaded up, the plane left the gate and queued up for the runway. ... read more

So, back in 2006, I took my oldest daughter, Zoƫ, who was 10 years old at the time, to England for 7-8 days. Problem was, I have 2 daughters, and my youngest daughter, Rhiannon, was only 5 years old at the time. Not only was she 5, but she was a VERY tempermental 5. I knew that there was no way physically nor emotionally that I could survive such a trip and remain sane. In order to keep things "fair", I made an agreement with Rhiannon that, upon turning 10, she could pick ANY place on the map and we'd go. Over the years, Rhiannon has picked all sorts of locations - Japan, Egypt, Austrailia, Russia, etc. Now, last year, I went hiking in REMOTE parts of China. Seeing as how I don't speak nor read ... read more
