1e Dag Penang. Door het vroege tijdstip van vliegen zijn we ’s morgens om 10.30 uur al in het allerlaatste hotel op Penang, Shangri La Goldens Sands Resort.
Pa heeft op Penang gelegerd gelegen, Bayar Lepas.65 Jaar geleden is vooral het harde drillen op oefeningen met bepakking pa bijgebleven. Morgen gaan we dit dorp verkennen, mits nog een beetje in originele staat aanwezig natuurlijk.
Penang, of "Pulau Pinang", is een staat in het noordwesten van Maleisië. De hoofdstad is George Town op het eiland Penang en het inwoneraantal bedraagt ruim 1,2 miljoen.
De naam "Penang" komt van het woord "pinang", wat verwijst naar de betelnootboom (Areca catechu). De naam "Pulau Pinang" letterlijk vertaald uit het Maleis betekent "pinang-eiland".
Tot het eind van de 18e eeuw hoorde Penang bij het sultanaat Kedah, daarna werd het een britse kolonie. Sinds 1946 maakt het deel uit van Maleisië.
Ennuh….Penang heeft een Hard Rock Hotel (en cafe natuurlijk, da’s lekker).

First day in Penang. Because of the early flight we arrive at the hotel Shangri-La Golden Sands Resort at 10.30 AM.
Pa was stationed on this island, in the village of Bayar Lepas to be exact. Tomorrow we’ll try to find some connections of his memories.
Penang was originally part of the Malay Sultanate of Kedah. On 11 August 1786, Captain Francis Light of the British East India Company landed in Penang and renamed it Prince of Wales Island in honour of heir to the British throne. Light then received it as a portion on his marriage to the daughter of the Sultan of Kedah. Light ceded Penang to the Government of India and promised the Sultan military protection from Siamese and Burmese armies who were threatening Kedah. Light is now credited as the founder of Penang. Since 1964 it is a part of Malaysia.
And uhmm.....Penang has a Hard Rock Hotel (and Cafe of course) so that’s great!
