wanted to take ferry to 'cat ba' island. vietnamese are charged less than half the price of foreigners. i offered, a few times, to leave the ferry before paying more for what? a faster ride? more comfortable perhaps? or is it to be smoke free? a resounding NO is the correct answer.

i did pay the vietnamese price. as the conductor approached me for the 3rd time, i started to unlock my bag from the bench so that i might disembark. he said, "don't" that i was going as a local. ooh rah!!

while on the island i rented a motorcycle. then i gave 3 vietnamese girls a ride. at the same time of course. i am learning to be a local.

on the same ride, i removed my sunglasses, as it was a bit cloudy and thus dark. 2 minutes later, a guy was sledge hammering a big rock. he hit it as i passed. a shard hit me in the side of the head. man, that was too close for comfort. keep those glasses on!!!!!
