Where's WhiteyAmidst thecrazy traffic in Siagon Whitey had no choice but to ride on my head. Here we are crossing the street. You just kinda gotta go for it and hope that everyone avoids you!
Well it is early, around 9:30am here. Not that early really but considering the condition of us when we turned in last night it feels a lot earlier than it is. We arrived in Siagon (Ho Chi Minh City) yesterday after taking in some western food and beach time. We ate pizza for dinner 3 nights in a row. One night we even went to 2 different pizza places. Sounds sickening now but it was a much needed respite from rice and noodles. Last night we went and had one of our last bowls of Pho for a while as we all leave Vietnam today.
We got to do a couple of scuba dives and although the visibility was only about 2 meters we still saw some amazing aquatic life. We dove at Madonna Rock and Mama Hanh Coral Garden. It was the most nerve racking dive I've ever been on. Although the one in Indonesia was tough due to the current, this one was rough because if you stopped to look at something within seconds everyone would be gone, lost into the sediment filled abyss. We all managed to survive though and other than Tristan and I losing Gabrielle

Pho 24Variation on a theme perhaps. This place had the best Pho' in town. We ate our last several servings here. There is no place like it back home.
and our Dive Master once it went pretty well. It is a whole other world on the bottom of the ocean. Magical.
Siagon is a proper city with tall buildings and the like. It has a much more modern metropolitan feel than Hanoi. Although that is the charm of Hanoi, its rustic buildings and crowded streets. There is definitely a different feel about this place. It is as if life goes on here even without us. A little relieving to know that the world doesn't revolve around you. There are fancier cars, neon lights, and loads of hawkers and touts. Mind you we haven't been anywhere that the touts and hawkers haven't been. We had 3 ladies follow us around for an hour as we went from hotel to hotel looking for a room last night. The thing about them is that they are just plain annoying, like that kid that repeatedly keeps poking you saying your name over and over(except for you Gracie). I mean really, take the hint. If the hint doesn't work than just listen when I tell you to bugger off. They haven't really gotten to us though, they just make it difficult to have

The alley Our hotl was down this alley. Not really an alley as we would think, it is far cleaner and doesn't smell nearly as bad as you may think. Just a road too narrow for cars.
a conversation by constantly repeating the same thing over and over. My favorite hawker was a little old lady that came to the sidewalk bar last night. She was selling Happydent chewing gum. When she actually smiled her teeth looked more like something out of a horror movie. I wonder if she gets the connection and knows why no one would buy her gum.
Along with the usual elements there is a new one here. It is the oldest profession in the world as they say. As we sat in a western style establishment drinking beers for 30,000 Dong that we paid 10,000 Dong for earlier that night there were swarms of hungry eyed Vietnamese women with old white guys. At first it was entertaining and then it turned into just plain sad. Mind you, we think most of them were really men but who knows.
In the end I am really glad I cam back to Vietnam. Although it goes completely against my theory of "Big World, So Little Time" I really got to see this country this time. From rice paddies to quaint villages, happy children to crooked old women salt fields to floating villages we

have covered the entire country. I can't say that I really understand the people here as the ones we have met have come from so many different walks of life it is hard to put it all together. I can however say that Vietnam ranks high on my list of beautiful places and is accessible to even the most high-maintenance travelers with good CHEAP accommodation. We spent on average around 10 dollars a night on a hotel with hot shower satellite TV and a fridge. Eating at local stalls and restaurants we could get by on less than $10 a day for food. Throw in a moto for $4 a day and you have yourself a great adventure.
I do have to say that when we weren't dodging giant bugs, skidding in front of buses, and sore bottomed beyond comprehension having a moto everyday has really made this leg of the trip so interesting. We really got to see places you could otherwise not go. We were completely free to explore, get lost and get found again. There were no negotiations with drivers, which never leave you feel like it was worth it, and we weren't stuck on public

transport routes. It was quite liberating and a great experience. I am just glad I lived to tell.
I probably would have never come back here if my sister and Tristan weren't here. I am grateful to them for inviting me along with them and especially my sister who did so much of the leg work.
Next stop Thailand. Koh Chang Island. A place I really wanted to see last year and didn't have time. I'll get to meet up with the Medford crew for a few days before going back to Indonesia.
Thanks for all you messages and comments, they go a long way when on a long trip.
til next time

And gave your sister credit for it too!!! Sounds like it was way beyond expectations. Small wonders of the world and you shine a light on them. Glad to know your continued adventures will have you meeting up with "the Medford crew" gee would you ever think Medfu would follow you to the other side of the world?!?!?!? :)

dear erics mom
we read this blog aloud to each other after we returned from the beach.although we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of your son, we try not to let on his influence in our travels this summer. We feel as if his head is already quite large since we have christened him President Paci.
Sincerely,
Christina and Kristin
hey Eric ..
Glad you've enjoyed Vietnam and the many wonders of the place. It's always fun to read your commentary. Thanks for sharing so much with us. I miss our golf games. Get your butt home soon, so we can enjoy a few rounds before settling in to work. I still haven't gotten to Chicago to see Mark. So much going on. Now with gabrielle home and another moving experience it looks like it will be September before I can get out there. I've been invited to speak at the Second life Community Conference in Tampa the weekend of Sept 5-6-7. It will be a good take as well as a chance to travel a bit. Lisa and I had lunch with Stephanie last Wednesday and caught up on all the happenings with her. I'm very glad to see good things happening. Enjoy the rest of your stay, be safe and know that we all miss you very much. Lisa always asks and when I talk with Rina once a week you Gabrielle and Mark are all she wants to know about.

We are sitting here reading about all of your adventures while we plan what fun kids things we are gong to todoay. Adult adventure seems so much carefree. We love receiving your blogs they make you feel that we are there with you. We appreciate the experience you are sharing with us. Make every moment and memory count because life goes by so fast. We look forward to your next blog. Travel Safe and Fund. Luciano, Dante and Annette
I'm glad you are enjoying the virtual journey. It is very exciting for me to have some of my kids (and maybe future students as well) along with me in spirit. It is really great to get messages from home. Makes it not seem so very far away. I'm now in Bangkok, Thailand. A very large crazy city!
I have to say that every time we drive by a golf course I think about it. I'll be good and ready, if not out of practice, when I get home.
I think I earned that title! Of course I would though, that is why I'm president.
Really Eric your blogs are the best. Whenever you decide to stop these summer experiences, what will we all read. While I get to stay in the same spot every summer I at least get to try and feel your good times as I read. Your little cousin made it home safely from her Ireland experience. A couple of pounds heavier from her Guinnesses she had daily over there. But she did have a great time and now she has to focus on her college life. And Nick gets up every day at 5:30 and goes running to get in shape for soccer can you believe that. Well anyway glad to hear that you are safe and sound (though your diving stories make me a little nervous) and enjoying every bit of your trip. Looking forward to see you, Gabrielle and Tristan all safely back in the great USA and hearing more stories. Love Aunty Donna, Mich and Nick
Glad to hear that you were able to see more of Vietnam than the first time and also about the great time you had with Gabrielle and Tristan. This is another great adventure that you can all reminisce about throught the years especially when you get old and to share with the grandkids and relatives.
I am so happy that you willbe going to the island and meeting up with the girls. May all of you have an amazing adventure and time together there. It will be amazing to meet up with friends from home in another world. enjoy and stay safe.
Lucille
Bah humbug! $10 a night. Grrr. Add a zero to that number and you're closer to my world, although I have been lucky at times - like now for instance.
Glad you're OK and having fun. What are you doing back in Indonesia?
mike
Thanks lucile. It has been great so far!
Dear Mike, Eric, Kristin, Christina, and 'fellow travelers'-- Following all of your trips has been fascinating and educational. I truly feel as if I've learned so much about the world that I would never uncover on my own. Not only are your individual exploits interesting, but your connections, both through meeting up and through discussions of shared experiences, add an incredible depth to the experience. You can't imagine how exciting it is for me that four teachers from my school are out there experiencing the world in ways that most of us will never be brave enough to try. When we say that we like to have teachers who bring different experience and backgrounds to a school, we don't realize what the potential really is. What you're doing this summer adds such an amazing dimension to our community!
