US army left overs Nov 19th Saigon
So, we are back in Saigon after two days in Can Tho. All I can really say about Can Tho ( and Hue) is that they are dirty, rat infested cities. Wouldn't recommend either to anybody. The other places have been quite nice though. I would return to both Hanoi and Hoi An in a flash. I suspect that some of the beach communities would nice also, but unfortunately the weather is not cooperating. Yesterday in Can Tho we had a major thunder and lightening storm which dumped massive amounts of water. Today when we arrived in Saigon we were met with another deluge of water, flooding everything in sight. At least when we arrived here at our hotel, it had not yet rained, until we decided to head out for a bite to eat. Leaving the restaurant we just had enough time to get back to the hotel before the storm hit. We had thunder loud enough that it boomed down our small alley. Then the rain poured. Right now the alley is flooded over ankle deep. One of the homes across the way from us is pumping out the water that has flooded into the

Took a cab this morning over to the War Remnants Museum and we were both surprised at how interesting it really was. Yes, it is a very biased point of view, the Americans are definitely the bad guys, but it left us with a good sense of the brutality of the war and an understanding of the pride the people here have of who they are. The museum has helicopters, planes, tanks etc on display (as does many other places), all abandoned when the Americans left.
From there we walked to the Central Post Office for some pictures. Didn’t have the camera when we came here to mail our parcel so had to come back. It is quite the place. Then we wandered around a bit, found a large, modern shopping plaza where Darrel was able to find some good, cool, sandals. Then it was off to the Revolutionary Museum. This place used to be a palace and now displays some revolutionary stuff along with some historical stuff. It is still very war based. Then from there we walked back to
the hotel, arriving just before the rain.
Tomorrow we will head over to the History Museum which is a bit farther away.

A couple of busy tour days for us. We did do the History Museum and Zoo..nothing much to report as they were pretty much as to be expected.
Then yesterday we traveled by speed boat to the Ben Dinh Cu Chi Tunnels. These are the tunnels that the Viet Kong used to hide from the Americans; and to pop out of at the most unexpected times. They must have really annoyed the Americans because they were bombed almost out of existence. We entered one of them, which had been widened for us Westerners, and followed it for about 30 metres. That was long enough because the tunnels are narrow, low, smelly, and dark. Not really my thing. Best part of the trip was the boat ride up to the tunnels. Looking at the foliage along the river is thick, green and beautiful. It is easy to understand why the Americans lost the war over here because they would never see what was coming.
Then today we took another tour, this one to the Mekong
Delta. It was a rough, bumby, two hour bus ride to My Tuo where we got onto narrow boats. This part of the tour was nothing to write home about…visited a village, saw some bees, saw some coconut candy being made, ate some fruit and a cheap lunch. After that however, our group split up and our headed back to Saigon via the river. It was three hour trip in a speed boat and again, it was a great trip. Darrel and I sat outside for the whole time and enjoyed the scenery.
Tomorrow is a shopping day and a trip to the Reunification Palace. In other words, a quieter day.
