The early morning commute to the place of swimming was uneventful. As per yesterday's blog - it's pretty much a case of dodgem bikes/cars/people. You do see some unusual sights when riding around. A good percentage of the bikes have been on the road for decades. Honda and Yamaha look like they were the vehicle of choice. Most are either 110cc of 125cc. It's only the younger people that have had enough money to buy the more modern bikes. It was only recently that the Vietnamese government allowed engine sizes greater that 125cc. The train of thought was that as the local roads were so bad, there so many bikes - it was considered to be a safety issue and if you limited the size of the engines that it would be safer. FAIL!! However - ... read more

Not sure why - but the wake-up rooster got me woken up at 04.30am, Still dark outside - so not sure why he thought he could let fly with that horrible cock-a-doodle-doo. Perhaps he is a nightwatch-rooster and there was a fox in the henhouse. Anyways - I was able to go back to sleep again but it meant I did not awake naturally until 06.30am - which made me a little late for my morning swim. I try to get the same bicycle each day - after adjusting the seat for my height and making sure the tyres are capable of transporting a 100kg payload - but some other persons in the homestay randomly take bikes and change the seat settings - which means I never get the same bike 2-days in a row. It's ... read more

Not sure what happened - but my blog for today was 900+ words - and somehow it's has "disappeared" I thought it was in "saved" status - waiting for me to "publish" - but alas I cannot find it. So now I will do a shortened version - sad because the original blog was informative - if I do say so myself. A little late to the beach this morning - so had it to myself except for 2 locals and the "regular" fisherman. The sea was warm again, and a slight swell - probably from the passing fishing boats (again). Only saw a couple of jellyfish - so I am sure it has something to do with the temperature of the water and the current. About 40 minutes of swimming, aerobics and then I make ... read more

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM!!! The rooster in the yard next door did his job and woke me around 06:00am. It's already in the mid 20's - so it's hard to get motivated to get ready for the beach. A quick call to KLY - then it's into the "routine". I arrive at the beach - and except for a couple of guests from one of the resorts and the local fisherman - I have the beach to myself. I notice only a couple of jellyfish this morning - so nothing to worry about. I do think I might have touched a tentacle yesterday because my left foot had a slight swelling. I did not feel a "sting" but am sure I brushed against a couple of the creatures, Anyhow - a little freestyle, some breaststroking, backstroking, water ... read more

It's been a week now - so I need to get into some kind of routine. The morning seems to come around earlier when your retired. I am waking up "naturally" between 05-06:00am - although sometimes the rooster in the yard next door makes sure I hear him!! A quick check in with Kathie via FB - and then its swim shorts, singlet, thongs and goggles - and on the treadly and cycle 2kms to the 500m stretch of beach between the Victorian Beach Resort and the Golden Sands Resort. The number of other people on the beach depends on my arrival time. If it's before 06:00am - there's usually a dozen or so locals there having their morning "bath". Sand is a great exfoliant - and it's not uncommon to see them rolling around in ... read more

Now - time to settle down and get into a "routine". But first I have to check out a few hotels for some colleagues from Kingscliff who will visit Hoi An in August. Ironically - they will arrive on 21 Aug - same day as Kathie and I arrive here with family after we have done the Long Tan commemoration tour. The colleagues have seen some hotels on the internet and asked me for my opinion/recommendation. As it happens - I did not know any of the 3 properties - so the day was spent visiting them and doing "site inspections" - so I could make a recommendation. I duly returned to my homestay and reported back to said colleagues. I then spent a little time helping one of the homestay workers practice her English. Coincidentally ... read more

6.30am wake-up and down to the beach by bicycle. Lots of "xin chau"'s along the way. I am a little late this morning - so I have the beach to myself except for the fisherman and the hotel guys setting up the beach chairs and safety flags. A little swimming, a little water aerobics - then head back to the homestay. For breakfast I try the noodles and veggies just to see what that does to my sugar level. I ask for only a little condensed milk in the coffee. But there's quite a bit of sugar in the fruit - pineapple, watermelon, banana and pear. But the insulin shot should take care of that. Off to the ATM and bank to get money for house rent deposit and for the motorbike (moto) deposit. You have ... read more

Now I can relax a little knowing we have a roof over our head(s) from 04 Aug until 17 Oct. I will spend my next days visiting friends, watching what i eat and drink because of the diabetes 2 - and relax a little. It's hard to control the diabetes because the Vietnamese use so much sugar (particularly cane sugar) in their food. Even salads get a dose of sugar in the various dressing - so you always have to ask them not to use sugar. And then there's the coffee. Fresh milk was always a problem in VN - so they make white coffee using condensed milk. Ask for a white coffee and you get a cup that has about 1cm of condensed milk sitting at the bottom. Ugghhhh - there's a high glucose reading ... read more

I wake early this morning - and decide I should again get into the habit of riding a bicycle the 2kms to the "secluded" section of beach between the Victoria Beach Resort and the Golden Sands Resort at Cua Dai beach. The relatively short ride is interesting because it's a chance to see regular "locals" during the journey. Like the little old lady who has the "ban mi" (Vietnamese bread roll filled with pate, veggies, various meats, oils) that is not far from the homestay. Or those at the many coffee stands enroute to the beach. And precariously making your way along the road at the point where the local market spills out on to the road - so it's a menagerie of stall holders, buyers, seller, bicycles, motos, cars, trucks, locals going to the beach ... read more

A good sleep at my homestay - Rice Village - in the hamlet of Vong Nhi - just outside Hoi An town. I promised the staff I would stay here on this visit as I failed to stay here during my previous visit. Today would be a quiet day - visiting friends in the village and arranging for a rental moto to get around on. I also had to check on the apartment we are renting for 2.5 months - to make sure everything is OK. You have to be careful with Vietnamese when dealing with them direct as sometimes things "change". In the afternoon I visit the apartment and see the owner who lives next door to the apartment. There are several other family members at his house. At this time I was visiting without ... read more
