One more holiday We are biking to the beach Lots of games to play. It seems like ages since I've been in Vietnam and it hasn't even been a week. I think it is partly because we really haven't been doing anything since we got here in Tam Ky. I'm psyched and excited to start with our placements tomorrow. Like I may have mentioned, the workload looks pretty light. I think three days a week I'm finished up by lunch time! But that is okay. It will give me lots of time to do stuff that I never have time for like read and perhaps finally finish that cross-stitch thingy (eh, Anita!) Oh, before I forget, here's the mailing address for the place I'm staying at for the next 6/7 weeks here in Vietnam. 01 - ... read more

Hello! Hello! Today is the first day of orientation.. Orientation New things to experience Very relaxing We spent part of the morning going to the local market. For a small place, Tam Ky sure has a huge market. Mind you it is probably because it is the main market for the entire town. I plan on going there again in the next couple of days since we did not have that much time there this morning. Also found where things like the post office, ATM and bus station are located. At the market I totally felt like I was the one on display. Seeing this "giant" Chinese Foreigner (a lot of people seem to think I'm from Singapore!) Well, I guess all 6 of us volunteers were on display. :) It was sad seeing the children ... read more

Well, I made it into Tam Ky for the volunteer placement late last night. There are a total of six of us volunteers here in Tam Ky. Four from Australia and another girl from Vancouver! What a small world. There are two of us to a room and I'm sharing with Karen who is from Perth. Orientation doesn't officially start until tomorrow. Today we are to "settle into" our accommodations. This morning we set off looking for the big market but didn't find the right one since the streets aren't really marked and we didn't have the smarts to grab the map before leaving! But that's okay. We managed to find our way back after coming across two other smaller markets. Lunch was a good mix of vegetables, meats, rice, soup and fruit. I think I ... read more

Hi all, hope you have got your shopping done and the presents wrapped........if not just get down the pub and have a few festive drinks instead.....you know it makes sense....! Life is good here. We staying in Hoi An for 5 nights, could easily have managed a month there as it's a really great little town. Got plenty of clothes tailor made there.....final bill was 655 US Dollars. $400 of that was mine, but I got: 2 suits 1 Tuxedo 9 Shirts 4 Trousers 3 Shorts 2 Winter Coats 1 pair of shoes 1 pair of 'Personalised' Trainers (!!) 4 ties so I am happy with the loot. Posted most of it onto Oz (cheers Dave!!), which cost us 110 Euro for everything to get there safe and sound (fingers crossed). Last Sunday we bumped into ... read more

We decided to give DaNang a miss and are now here in nice little Hoi An. Our 8am bus this morning didn't show up until 10:30am so we didn't arrive until almost 2pm. Lovely hotel with a small pool, $10 for the room. For our last day in Hue yesterday we went to the DMZ (De-Militarised Zone). Trip left at 6am and returned at 6pm, and we worked out that we were only off the bus for a total of 3 hours (and that included lunch & breakfast!!). Exploring the tunnels that the Vietnamese lived in for 4 years was the highlight, but overall the trip had far too much time spent on the bus......at least it only cost $8 each! Also got to see an old American Army Base with helicopters, tanks, and stuff. The ... read more

We had a few hours free in Hue, and then we took about a 3 hour ride to Hoi An. Driving through Hai Van Pass was pretty nice. The scenery was amazing. We had views of the beach, and views over the mountains. Our hotel in Hoi An was pretty big. On the outside it looked pretty posh, so we were all a bit puzzled when we pulled up there. When we went inside the rooms were in good condition, but didnt quite reach that 5 star rating. The town is full of tailors. I didnt go mad with getting clothes made. So I just looked through a few fashion magazines, and found a nice pair of jeans. So I got measured up, went back later that night, and then the next morning they were finished. ... read more

Det ... read more
