Old friend!Old friend!Old friend!

My friend of 38 years came to stay for 2 weeks.
Well, that's Christmas and New Year done and dusted and now everyone in Hoi An and Vietnam for that matter is preparing for Tet. This is their most important day of the year. It is the same day as Chinese New Year and occurs on the first day of the first month on the Vietnamese calender on a new moon, usually late January, early February. This year it starts on 30th January.

Hoi An is abuzz with preparations for this festival. Houses and shops are being repainted (straight over the top of the mould) and special foods are being prepared, schallots being one of them, would you believe? Dog is another but a local expat from Australia assures me that the family pet isn't devoured but they have special restaurants where you can consume this "delicacy". Lots of weddings happen at this time of year also as it is a very auspicious time to wed.

Will be moving next week to the beach. Have rented a brand new cottage on An Bhang beach and looking forward to some exercise. Have been very remiss since leaving Australia as the only exercise I have done is walking (miles and miles) or

cycling (miles and miles)! Nothing to really get my heart rate up. Running/walking on the beach will be a change. Won't need any other motivation other than a swim after!

I have included a few food photos as some of you are interested in weird looking dishes. Haven't actually tried any of them yet and probably won't but one man told me that the silk worms had a lovely flavour but the texture left a lot to be desired.

Having "going away" drinks for a couple of friends today at Soul Kitchen, a restaurant/bar on the beach which, coincidently is about a 5 minute walk from my new abode. Ged, an acupuncturist who volunteered for Lifestart from the UK and Glen, my fellow traveler are both leaving on Tuesday to fly to Phu Quoc, quite separately I might add in case you get any ideas. With new volunteers coming all the time and others leaving, it's a revolving door here all the time. So many new friends to be made!

I could eat the baby clams and the spicy frogs but draw the line at the braised organs - the scum that has formed on top is very unappetising.

Silk Worms, Dogs and Organs for Tea?
Hi Sue, Great to hear of your exploits in Hoi An but YUK to the food choices!! I hope you find something a bit more appetising than those salads (they all look the same). Not even going to mention the braised organs - ewwwww - make sure you drink plenty of alcohol to kill off any bugs !! Looking forward to seeing pics of your new beach pad!! Big hugs xxx
