We arrived in Lao Cai train station at 5.30am on Thursday and soon found a minibus to take us to Sapa, however we were asked to wait 20 minutes for the next train as we were the only ones on the bus. It was 7am by the time we left and 8am when we actually arrived in Sapa. We were taken to a hotel to look at which was really nice and cheap so we decided to stay there. The weather was so cold we could see our own breath and the whole town was covered in fog, so we decided to go back to bed for a few hours, but first we put on lots of extra layers of clothing as there was no heating in our room, just a fan that we certainly weren't ... read more

The night train arrived in Lao Cai at 5.30am, I had slept quite well on the journey as I had been so tired. We had to sit & wait in a mini bus until it was full, (about an hour) & it was cold. It took about an hour to get from Lao Cai to Sapa & as well as being cold there was thick fog, as Sapa is high in the mountains & you couldn't see anything. We found somewhere to stay, put on 4 t-shirts, 2 pairs of socks & a pair of trousers & had a sleep, I was still freezing cold so we asked for more blankets for the evening. After we got up, I had a hot shower, I nearly cried as it was so hot & I was so cold! ... read more

Sapa is bloody freezing! What makes it worse is the high humidity and fog, which means that the air is so moist that your clothes are always damp. It goes right through you and seeps into your bones. Our trekking group consisted of our guide Cee-Cee (cheeky 17 y.o. Hmong native), a couple of French guys, and a Jap dude. We were followed every step of the way by an entourage of local villagers whose main aim was to peddle their wares. There was no escaping them as our progress was severely hampered by the track being very muddy and slippery. Visited 4 villages over 3 days and covered 24kms - Lao Chai (Hmong people), Ta Van (where we stayed with a local Hmong family), Giang Ta Chai (Red Dao people), and Cat Cat (Black Hmong ... read more

In the far north of Vietnam, ten hours on a rickety overnight train from Hanoi, lies the sleepy mountain town of Sapa. It is the main gateway for travellers wishing to experience remote Vietnam, although the hilltribes that provide this experience do not call themsleves Vietnamese. They do not have passports, often do not even speak the language and have minimal involvement in anything outside of their northern homes. Our bus ride from the train station in the foothills to Sapa at the peak was nothing short of terrifying! The horn on the bus was broken, and we learnt on our 45 minute journey just how crucial it is to have a horn when driving in Vietnam. On any sharp curves (ie blind corners), it is customary to honk to indicate your approach. In the absence ... read more

After a long day doing the perfume pagoda and a good dinner at the Baguette and Chocolate, we crashed hard till 11am the next morn. We dragged our overslept butts around Hanoing for a couple of ours trying to waste time till our 11pm sleeper train to Sapa. After an OK sleep being rocked in the sweat box the call a sleeper we arrived bushed at the town on Lao Ci at 6am. We found a local driver with a placard with the worst spelling of my name I have ever seen and plopped our buts into yet another minibus. A crazy twisty hour drive up higher into the northern highlands we arrive in Sapa proper at about 7am. We were treated to a quickly baguette and jam breakfast and it was trekking time. At about ... read more

We have taken it easy today and just done the one mountain/village walk! We visited the Red Sao village, the village of our guide. She took us to meet her family and it is really humbling to see how the tribes people live. We met her cousin, who you will see in photos below, and her 4 month old baby. The baby is in fact a boy although he is dressed in a pink hat. It does not seem to matter what the children are dressed in as long as they are warm. It was strange to see that although they live in total poverty they still have satelite dishes!! You're right Ann it is cold and although it is damp luckily it is not raining. The mist is really thick and heavy. The temperature is ... read more

Hi everyone, Thank you very much for your comments and messages (Ann I did get your comment & message :-) ) It's great to know that you are all enjoying our blog. We normally get a bit of time during the day to pop into an internet cafe and try and let you know what we have been up to. We arrived in Sapa at 6am this morning. We caught the overnight train from Hanoi and it was an experience!! We did not get very much sleep last night so we will be having an early night for sure tonight! I think we last updated you when we got back from the Emeraude on Halong Bay. That evening (Tuesday) we met up with our new American friends, Darcy, Dana, Jean & Joyce and went for a ... read more

Well our first day in Hanoi was definatly exciting! It was the most chaotic and cultured city we have been this far! As we walked through all the different streets they were all dedicated to a certain item. For example clothing street, shoe street, herbal medicine street, christmas street, etc. There were about 50 of these different types of streets. We got lost walking through the old quarter of Hanoi. Every corner we turned was filled with a new suprise. The sidewalks are so filled with motorbikes and street stalls selling so much random junk that you have to walk in the middle of the road and weave through all the motorbikes. During the day when we were walking around I was comfortable. Once the night time hit when Asia gets busy I didnt even want ... read more

The 12 hour train ride from Hanoi to Sapa was great. A 2nd class, soft sleeper train. We board at night and wake up the next morning in another city......Actually in Sa Pa's case it feels like a different country, a whole world away from Vietnam. Of course being in Asia nothing is as simple as it seems. Getting off the train we were stopped by some officials asking for our ticket. I left it on the train. The stone faced officals wanted a whopping 400 000 dong fine ($30). I ran back the full length of the train to get the tickets. The lady would not let me back on no matter how much I pleaded. She kept saying "No English" Money talks in Asia so as soon as I pulled out my wallet, my ... read more
