I returned to Hanoi in mid April after spending 6 months in southern Vietnam and 8 months in Australia. I was happy to go back home and met my family as well as eating my favorite food. My sister from Sài Gòn (HCM city) also went back home with her husband and son during our national holiday, so we made a 4-day trip to Hạ Long bay from 30 April to 3 May 2014. My Swedish brother in law had never been to Hạ Long bay even though he has been living in Vietnam for 3 and a half years. He wished to see the bay so we organized the trip for him. We rented a 16 seater car with driver and the 11 of us arrived in Bãi Cháy city at 7pm. This city is ... read more

We travelled from Dien Bien Phu to Sapa in a minivan, and apart from a lunch stop that was more for the benefit of the driver catching up with some mates than us actually being able to obtain any food, it was a pretty easy 10 hour trip. On arrival in Sapa we were swamped by the ladies from the surrounding hill tribes trying to sell us their treks and home-stays. They had remarkably good English (all learnt from practicing with tourists) and were incredibly persistent. The 2 ladies that attached themselves to us followed us around the town for 2 hours! The 2 hours part was more our fault though because we had encountered another unexpected holiday - Sapa Cultural Week! What joy... everything was booked out and we felt like it was ground hog ... read more

We started our day with Tai Chi on the sun deck before getting ready to sail back to the harbour. Before we left we we visited the Surprise Caves. There were 3 separate caverns The Surprise Cave the Amazing Cave and the Shocking Cave. Each had impressive features and although they may well have been spectacular the sheer number of visitors basically unrestrictedly touching, photographing and walking over has led to them being fairly ordinary and sadly grubby. Eking out the last of our Halong experience we lay on the sun deck watching the scenery go by as we drifted back to the pier where we caught a bus, stopping at the same type of tourist trap, back to The Boss in Hanoi. Wayne picked up some pizza, pasta and shopping mart beer whilst out getting ... read more

My friend and I were dreaming of going on a cruise together and so when the opportunity to travel to see the Halong Bay came through, we grabbed it with both hands. We started off in classy Singapore airlines on the first day of the year. I watched a lovely historical Chinese movie called 'Face Reader' with all the thrills and drama of the Chinese court. We landed in Hanoi and it was lovely to feel the slight chill after hot Singapore. We immediately set off to see the Ho Chin Minh mausoleum and the Ethnology museum. I was lost as I admired the 53 different ethnicities in a country like Vietnam. I am too scared to think of the same in huge countries like China and India! We had some street food of baguettes, sausages ... read more

Some feeling a little worse for wear with early breakfast and a transfer to the sightseeing boat for our excursion to Lan Ha Bay. We visited a Pearl Farm which was pretty much the grubbiest part of the bay that we saw and despite the "You no buy, you will regret" I have no regrets (well not about not buying pearls but maybe about the amount of gin consumed last night). We chugged further along into Lan Ha and stopped to kayak around some of the formations by Three Peaches Beaches including the Bat Cave, Dark and Light Cave and kayaking under and through many of the formations. A glorious day that included much lying around in the sun and enjoying the breathtaking scenery that we were cruising by. We finished the day by climbing to ... read more

After breakfast we left Boss and picked up another couple. Typical stop on way at giant tourist shop with silk and lacquer ware and giant stone turtles. On arrival to Halong Bay 3hrs later we were ushered to the Glory Cruise waiting area and offered tea whilst we waited for our fellow cruisers. A tender took us out to our junk. Really lovely timber interior with lots of velvety accessories. Once everyone was on board we cruised through the bay with the massive limestone rocks passing by as we had lunch. We stopped at a fishing village and kayakked around. A fellow traveller lost his iphone from his pocket as he got out of the canoe so our return to the boat was delayed a little as one of the local guys tried diving for it. ... read more

The second day of the trip. Those of us who were left boarded another boat and were taken to Cat Ba Island where we visited Cat Ba National Park. Caroline, Ally and I stuck together as there was us and a Dutch family left from our group. Cat Ba national park was great. We went off alone trekking up and through the mountain. Some of it was tough and we were practically rock climbing - I loved it! We reached the top and had views of the rest of the park. Happy! After getting back down to ground level, we made our way to Cat Ba, where we checked into our hotel, had lunch and for the rest of the afternoon we had free time. I took a walk around the bay and to the beach ... read more

Waking up early for the bus to collect me to take me to Halong bay on a 3 day, 2 night trip. Cat, a canadian girl I had chatted to at the hostel a few nights before was also doing this trip but only doing 2 day, 1 night stay. She had been picked up on time, but I was still waiting. 15 minutes later than the suggested pick up time, my pick up arrived...a chick on a motorbike. She drove me through the crazy roads to the bus where everyone was waiting for me (even Cat was on there). They obviously forgot about me. I arrived in Halong Bay at 12.30pm, where we clambered into a small boat that took us to our small cruise ship. I shared a room with Cat, which worked out ... read more

During Deepavali break in 2012, I and my husband decided to go to Halong Bay for a long weekend get away. Both of us have been in Vietnam many times prior to this trip but it was for business, and we hardly had a chance to explore the city or area. Initially, we wanted to go to Sapa, located in the Northwest Vietnam, famous for its culture and highland. Unfortunately, the train schedule didn't really match with ours, so we decided to go join Emeraude Cruise instead. I had a totally different experience coming to Hanoi as a tourist than being there for work. Being a tourist, I saw everything brand new with open mind, and I got to appreciate the Vietnamese lifestyle and people better. Even the lake that I hardly paid much attention before ... read more
