Was pleased to have arrived in Hue, away from the big city of Hanoi, it is much slower down here which is great for a change and we have really good accomodation in a really good location we don't have to wander more than about 100m and have the choice of about 6 restaurants/cafes. We decided to spend our first afternoon wandering around the old city, which, again is a world heritage site. We had to cross the river to get over to the old city and wandered up to the bridge, where a cyclo driver said "no, you can't cross the bridge" and he tried to point us to the other bridge 500m away from where we wanted to go, we were slighly sceptical of this and hung around and took a few photos until ... read more

We were looking forward to Hue but in the end we were a bit disappointed. The town was OK, some great resturants and drinking holes, but in terms of stuff to see it was a let down. The citadel was not bad but we had been told inside wasn't worth it so gave that a miss. The area around the citadel was good for a cycle round though just to soak up the atmosphere. The main thing we wanted to see was the tombs of the old emperors. Maybe we didn't read up on it enough but we found them quite dull and not really that interesting. The most fun part of the day was the motorbike ride between stops which included having to ride the bike over a very unstable bamboo bridge about 1m wide, ... read more

North to South - the first two stops on the road down through Vietnam. In Hue, (pronounced Who - ay), Helen and I ate disgusting pasta that had so much garlic in it, we felt nauseous. Actually, everytime I crave western food I go for Pasta (in India it was usually the only western choice) and its always rotten so now I have finally learned and banned myself from ordering pasta. To work off the pasta in our bellies and to avoid looks of scorn and hatred from locals due to our pong we hired bicycles and cyled for hours around the city. It was great! We both couldn't remember the last time we were on bikes and these were ancient models with curving handlebars and hard high seats so that you were sitting high and ... read more

I flew from Hanoi to Hue to cut out a 15 hour bus journey through what is not the most exciting area of Vietnam. The main reason I visited Hue was to see the imperial citadel. Most of the citadel was destroyed during the 1968 Tet offensive, when the Viet Cong flag flew over the citadel for weeks. Though it has been heavily renovated, you can still see bullet holes in a few places. The citadel was quite interesting and the government is carrying out extensive renovations. It looked like a smaller version of the Forbidden City in Beijing. The constant harassment of the moto and cyclo drivers is annoying, but you just have to be firm and ignore them when they follow you. On the second day, I took a boat trip to the imperial ... read more

Hey all, I'm leaving Hue today so I'm posting some pictures for you guys. Hue has been awesome - too short a stay, as usual, but really good time while I've been here. Yesterday we hired a boat for a ride down the "perfume" river and a look at some of the sights along the river - most of the pictures are from the boat. The actual boat ride was nice, but I'm getting pretty sick of looking at old tombs and temples, etc, so we only stopped at a few places and just enjoyed the river ride for the rest of the day. The Citadel was definitely the highlight of the day - they let you (or don't stop you when you do) climb inside American tanks. I've never been inside a tank, so that ... read more

Well, I followed up the sandwich with an all you can eat pizza place for dinner and a big ice cream sunday the next day. I also decided to book a flight out of Ho Chi Minh City for the 17th going back directly to Bangkok. This means I won't get to see Cambodia except for Angkor Wat but I think I didn't really have enough time to see as much as I would have liked anyway so I'll leave it for next time. I am currently in Hue which is much quieter and much hotter than Hanoi. I am still being hounded by people wanting to give me a ride on their motorbike for an insane fee but it's not as bad. I've had a few conversations with people about their impressions of Vietnam and ... read more

Though we loved Hoi An we did have to keep moving and so we headed for Hué. The ride here was once again a real feast for the eye with imposing mountains, still bays and paddyfields as far as the eye could see. Arriving here we quickly checked into a place with a fan and a private balcony and took refuge from the heat. Set on the Perfume River (named for the lillies and lotuses that used to line its banks), the ancient Imperial City of the Nguyen Dynasty and the Tombs of its Kings dominate the North side, Hué is a laid back City set in beautiful countryside. The highlight of our stay here was a motorcycle tour we took with two great guys, Minh and Thu. Whilst zooming along we saw stunning vistas of ... read more

Hue is an interesting city, with the Perfume River neatly disecting the city and as the former capitol of the counrty, the heart of the city surrounded by a defensive fortifation consisting of an enormous brick wall that runs a total of 6 miles around. On top of all this, is a fortified citadel is a walled off area within the walled of area that encloses several acres. All in all, the city provides ample fair for just nosing about. On my first day spent my time wandering the streets and poking around some fairly interesting museums. The following day, on the recommendation of some friends, I bought a ticket to the citadel. The city of Hue was fiercly contested in the Vietnam War, and as a result of the heavy bombing a large part of ... read more

Went on the Perfume River boat tour. Stopped at Thien Mu Pagoda, and three major mausoleums of past kings—Tu Duc, Kai Dinh, and Minh Mang. The kings built their mausoleums when they were still alive and used them as retreats. Also stopped at Hon Chen Temple. Lunch on the boat (better than the last boat lunch, but not great). Got back to Hue and walked over to the other side of the river. We tried to find a couple small pagodas, then crossed to the moat into the Citadel. A cyclo driver offered to take us around the Citadel, so we hopped in and went on a leisurely one-hour circuit tour. He dropped us off where we started and we headed to a bia hoi place nearby. There were a couple of Vietnamese guys drinking at ... read more

Breakfast at Son Xanh Blue River Restaurant. There were two guys there who were already drinking beer at 7AM! Then we got a bus to Hue, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stopped at Marble Mountain along the way. There is a cave there, but we didn’t feel like paying the admission fee and racing up to the cave and back to the bus in 15 minutes. The bus stopped right in front of Phu An Hotel and there were touts that got on the bus to drum up business. The place was nice, so we stayed. We had lunch at Omar Khayyam’s Indian Restaurant. Then we walked to The Citadel and toured the Forbidden Purple City, which follows the same layout as the Forbidden City in Beijing. Much of the Purple City was ... read more
