After my beach vacation in the south, I met up with an organic farmer named jo. I had planned to work on his farm, but instead volunteered with him, working on various adobe building projects. The first was in Chaiyaphum province in the northeast. We were building an entire village for a group of farmers who had been displaced from their land by a government dam. Nov 4 2002 Hello all, Here is yet another mass e-mail from this crazy fool. So I made it to Malaysia after my month of roaming the south and watching my bowels change their consistency and frequency in a chaotic patternless manner. Yes I saw about two minutes of Malaysia, leaving Thailand, entering Malaysia and coming right back. It was a ridiculous process of routine paperwork, but indeed, I got ... read more

Maandag Formuliertje, formuliertje... Thailand in gewandeld.

My 19 hour stop in Bangkok was great - I slept a lot on the plane from Denver, so took a bus in to Khao San Road as my cousin Jon recommended. At 3am things were fairly quiet but I met a couple of British people (Welsh and Scottish) took some tea in a bar, and then slept for a few hours in a hotel there. The next day I took a look at the Royal Palace, a 60 ft long Golden Buddha (Wat Po), and the Golden Mound with a lovely Austrian couple before having a great lunch and then heading back to the airport. It was just as well that I left a lot of time to catch my flight to Delhi because the traffic was terrible since there was some foriegn royalty landing ... read more

Just letting you know that I made it to Bangkok OK. I was going to write earlier but things have been a bit hectic. I arrived at the hostel I was supposed to be meeting Scott in and went up to the room and there was just a scrawled message from him saying that he had a fever and was going to the hospital, but no more info. The people in the hostel were really helpful though and called the hospital to confirm he was there and wrote all the details down in Thai to give to a taxi driver. I got to the hospital and someone showed me to his ward, full of old sick men. He was in a bed in the corner attached to a drip! It turned out that he had been ... read more

Here’s me on a lonely beach in Krabi, Thailand. I was there on a month long trip with my brother. We’d planned to see a lot more of the country but it just turned into one big party. I’d like to go back and do it properly one day. ... read more

Hello from Bangkok, it is now 4:30 am and I am in the airport getting ready to fly out. I got here Thursday night, a day later then planned. Can anyone guess why? One guess only. I MISSED MY FLIGHT! This has been a quick visit. One quick stop in Hong Kong and it is off to Calgary and back to North America. This is the first time I am actually on time to catch a plane (the ticket window isn't even open yet). I know from experience that I have another 2.5 hours before they close the window for the flight. Well got to go. See the guys in Calgary soon, and the rest of you soon afterwards. Off again to fly the friendly (I hope) skies, Joel ... read more

I did it! After 4 days of "work", an exam, and $170, I am now a fully certified open-water diver! I am on Ko Tao Island at the moment, one of the cheapest places to get certified in the world. The first two days of the course were a bit of a pain as I had to spend the mornings sat in a classroom studying all the theory side of diving. On the second day we did our first dive in the sea, in a shallow sandy bay so we could do all the "skills" required for the certification - clearing the mask, emergency procedures, taking inflator jackets on and off under water etc etc. The last two days were the best though, as there was no theory, only cool dives. Each day we did two ... read more

Back to friendly Thailand and familiar Khao San Road. We had our much-anticipated reunion with Chris and, of course, many beers were had we caught up on the gossip from home. Too many more were had during a crazy night out to Nana Plaza to see the sex shows (!!) with an international group of insane people. What fun! And best of all, the dancers all seemed like they're actually having a good time. Not the desperate, coked-out brand of sex entertainer you see elsewhere but people who are just enjoying themselves and aren't taking work too seriously. I love it! The women here are like the trees that hold the sand on the beach. From a young age they can travel by themselves, ride a motorbike, work at manual labor, flirt with men and run ... read more
