Today of course is a day that we sort of slept in, not too late but later than expected. I messaged Vincent early as we had something for his Mum and we organised to meet for breakfast. Vincent and his family were going to meet us near our hotel as we couldn't risk being late to get to the airport. We eventually met only Vincent and Toto as his Dad was not well and ended up at the doctors. We went into Raffles City Marketplace and we ate some bread with some sort of peanut spread with 2 sunny side up eggs, doused in soy sauce and pepper. This is a Malaysian /Singapore type of meal, it was very nice so we bought 2 jars of the spread to take home. We then said our goodbyes and left Vincent and Toto as we needed yo get yo the airport. We checked out of the hotel, grabbed a taxi, and we were off to the airport, terminal 2.
We had some time to spare once we were checked in so we rang home to see how things were, of course Murphy's Law, ( he's a bastard!), our air conditioning unit
has broken down, so I rang Dad to get a service man to come to fix it.
Time to board, we went through Customs X-ray and Clint had packed one of the peanut spreads in his backpack, so that jar got confiscated. We then got on our flight to Phuket International Airport. The flight was just over an hour and once landed, we had a shuttle pick us up and take us to Aquamarine Beach Resort at Kamala Beach, about 45 minutes away. ( free wifi in the bus allowed us to let the girls know we were ok.
We were taken to our rooms, and then the attendant wanted a tip, not knowing the money yet, I thought I was giving him lots of money but it worked out to be about $1.50!!!
We explored around the resort, which is very hilly, everywhere is stairs, no lifts!! This area is built into the side of the hills, I would say terraced. A lot of devastation was caused 11 years ago with the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami and it's a bit freaky to see the place next door still getting rebuilt as they've run out of money. Its hard to
imagine a huge wall of water coming across this bay. We are higher up on a hill but I would still be running higher if I saw Tsunami coming.
After exploring the resort, we changed into our bathers and went to the pool, so refreshing, and then planted ourselves at the bar for a frozen cocktail, I had a Pina Colada daiquiri and Clint had a mango daiquiri. Brain freeze first then we enjoyed them.
We caught the 5pm shuttle to the beach area for our first adventure out, thinking it would be easy but I'm still trying to get my head around the currency conversion that I totally confused myself. The rate is 24 Baht to $1.00 AUD, so first shop we tried to barter but didn't end up with the shirts. We went to the 7/11 store and purchased a local tourist sim card, had a couple of problems with the sim and the language, but in the meantime found a supermarket and bought some supplies. We walked along the main road until we found a place for dinner, it was very nice and very cheap. Got a taxi to take us back as its about 2km from the
main part of Kamala, then cooled off in the pool before bed. Another exhausting day!
