10th Feb 14.
We headed to Krabi for 3 nights - and of course we were staying in the accommodation booked for us which were little bungalows, a 5 minute walk from the beach but miles from the town/nightlife.
Arriving there we were skeptical of our hotel but the bungalows were nice, clean and big. The only problem with all these hotels were that they weren't sociable or anything and we didn't meet any other travellers AT ALL. Not exactly what we wanted being two 18 year olds, we felt like 40 year olds on a family holiday in the places we were staying, so frustrating.
Krabi was average as were the nights out - we found ourselves playing connect 4 in a bar with two strangers on our last night, WILD.
Chang bar was probably the best and we met quite a few other travellers which was nice as we lacked that in our accommodation. Although the shady Thai boys working there gave us 3 free buckets one night which we naively accepted and most of that night was a blur...we're almost convinced we got roofied but luckily nothing bad happened.
During our stay in
Krabi, we went to do some elephant trekking which we booked through our hotel for about 600 baht.
On the way in the tuk tuk, we stopped by a field and there I witnessed something which made me question the integrity of my entire existence....we found out...pineapples grow out of the GROUND. Okay maybe it wasn't that shocking but even the 40-something year olds on the trip with us were getting out of the tuk tuk to take photos and all sorts. What a revelation.
Anyway, when we got there, we had to climb up on a platform to get on the elephants. It was nothing like I imagined, but in a bad way. I disliked every minute of it from first seeing the baby elephants chained up to the trainer on the elephant with us with a sharp rod to seeing an elephant playing a HARMONICA (even I can't do that, jheeze). I'm not sure what I expected because realistically 99% of elephant trekking places are like this (the only humane one I saw was in Pai where they had a sanctuary and you could bathe with them). I understand they have to use those rods to control the
elephants for the tourists safety but sitting on top of one whilst that was happening, I felt awful and couldn't enjoy it. The only bit I liked was feeding them bananas but overall I don't think I'd want to do it again, but it was a good experience seeing those creatures up close, one even gave me a kiss on the cheek.
After Krabi, we booked a bus to Koh Samui where we stayed for one night. Food was fairly pricey around where we stayed and I wasn't keen on the nightlife.
Before leaving for our trip, we'd booked Dancing Elephant hostel for the full moon period (12th-17th Feb), but obviously the conman at the tourist info/travel agent somehow convinced us that it wasn't good to stay on Koh Phangan etc etc. so we have to stay on Samui and get a boat over. By this time, sitting in this shit, secluded hotel in Ko Samui, we realised everything that guy had told us was absolute bullshit so we quickly booked a boat to Koh Phangan for the 14th (Full moon was 15th) and hoped our hostel was still reserved when we arrived..
