The three weeks with Mom and Daryl were pretty great. Their first week in Seoul was a great experience in that Colin and I got to share our little life in Korea with them...just like when Colin's sister Christine was here. And being with them when they saw new things for the first time made me have moments of renewed appreciation for living in Korea. They seemed to really like the big city. As Colin mentioned in the previous blog (along with pics) we did shopping, a weekend getaway, a ferry cruise, celebrated Buddha's birthday with the locals, and went to a palace.
It was tough leaving Colin behind (again) but it was pretty cool to be setting off on a little adventure to Thailand with my mom and brother.
We started in Bangkok and then headed north to visit the city of Ayuthaya (Thailand's capital back in the day). We took a train which was pretty shabby but pretty cool, nonetheless. We stayed for a day (or two...I'm in Vietnam right now and my memories are getting mixed up), then headed back to Bangkok. Originally we were going to venture all the way to Chang Mai, but having
A sea of black hair
This was at the Children's Day festival in Seoul that we stumbled upon. only two weeks, we figured that we better find a beach sooner than later.
We stopped in Hua Hin for a few days before heading south to Koh Phan Ngan. The 8 hour bus ride wasn't too bad. It did get a little cramped near the end when more locals started cramming it full to the point of barely any standing room.
We decided to head to the north of the island (Koh Phan Ngan) to a quiet beach. It was so quiet in fact, that we needed a 4X4 vehicle to take us to the bungalows that we chose to stay in (based on info in our books.) Well, the beach was pretty but I could tell by the look on Daryl's face when we finally put our bags down that it was perhaps a little too secluded for a holiday with his sister and mom. I think his words were, "ya, it's beautiful.......for a holiday with your girlfriend!". Well it stormed that night (did I mention that rain was an ongoing event during our two weeks?) so all we really did was eat at the only restaurant open on the beach and then tuck in for
the night. Mom and Daryl were pretty good sports about staying in the "treehouse", despite the huge gaps in the floorboards that allowed all the creepy crawlers free reign and the v-shaped mattress that Daryl had to sleep on. However, it was the cold water shower that mom had to take that was the last straw for her. Ha Ha. It was time for an upgrade!
The next day we headed to the island of Koh Samui and basically stayed put for about 6 days. We were at a pretty busy beach that had a pretty bumping town with shops and lots of other people. I think it was more up Daryl's alley and it was convenient for mom and I 'cause we could hit more tailor shops! (Daryl was convinced that we had an addiction.) We had a really nice place right on the beach and on the days that it didn't rain we enjoyed the beach. I have to admit that it was a nice treat staying in a nice place--especially on the rainy days.
We took a quick flight back to Bangkok a couple of days before heading back to Seoul. I think Mom and
Daryl would have preferred to hop on a plane back to Canada at that point but Colin and I were counting on them to lug some of our suitcases back to Canada. Let's just say that they had quite the heavy load leaving Seoul.....only Colin and the luggage could fit in the cab--we all had to walk to the bus station that would take them to the airport. (We were strategic in letting Colin in the cab: he had to deal with the cranky cabbie who was wondering what the hell we were doing loading his car so full for a fare that was only two blocks. Ha Ha.)
It was a little tough to see them go, but I told myself that after being away from family for 8 or so months another 7 weeks was going to be pretty easy.
Colin and I had another 4 days in Seoul to pack up the rest of our stuff to ship home and see some people for (maybe) the last time.
We are now in Hoi An in Vietnam and LOVING it! We'll update soon.
