My hut
Ants, roaches and me Well the same thing happened last night as had the day before. I spent an hour typing something out, only to loose it all when i tried to put it onto the webpage. So i went to bed a bit fed up that i'd have to do it all over again.
You will only get a potted version now. Hallowean in the Ko san road was everything i expected it to be and more. It was just one long street party that went on for hours with so much to see and do. A band similar to Stomp were playing and they were absolutely fantastic. I caught the end of their first set and made a point of finding out when they were going to play next and got there nice and early to get a place at the front. Mistake - of course a blonde western face was the first one pulled out of the audience made to play some instrument thingy and dance, i think i held my own though, certainly got an encouraging round of aplause.
After that i bumped into my masseuse Tiam and he invited me to a party with him and his friends.
I declined which i think was much to his relief when i told him how old i am, he thought i was about 25!! Like i wasn't going to tell you all the bit of news, some things are worth typing twice!
After a very late night i explored every mode of transport in Bangkok including Tuk Tuk - which i have to say was one of the scariest things i've ever done. This was all in order to find my way out of the city and hear towards Kanchanaburi. After 3 local buses where i was the only Western face i managed to track down the bus out of the city and headed North East. About an hour into the journey i started to feel stomach cramps and just hoped and prayed that they wouldn't reach their destination before i got to mine!!! A little out of the town here the bus met a van coming towards it in a very narrow spot. This didn't seem to faze the van driver at all and he just continued straight for us, knocking the wing mirror off the bus. With that the driver jumped out of his cab, on to the back of a passing moped and headed off down the road after the offending driver. We all sat patiently waiting 15 mins till he came back and resumed our journey - you couldn't make it up.
From the bus station i got a rick-shaw, i felt so sorry for the guy trying to shift me and my 25 kilos of backpack. I checked into a little place right on the river Kwai, so much so on the river my room or shall i say hut was on stilts over the marshy edges of the river. Everytime someone walked down the gangway to their hut the whole thing shook including the bed, it was like being in Vegas!
I've decided that one night in a shaking bamboo hut over a swamp is enough for one lifetime and have moved to a nicer air conditioned room, 100b more but well worth it.
Today i've been to the Death Railway museum and cemetary, which i found quite moving just looking at the hundreds of stones laid to commemorate the dead. Then i went to a Tiger sanctuary run by monks where you could go into the compound with the Tigers and touch them, i've got pictures which i will once again try to put on here. I didn't like the whole Tiger thing and it left me with a very bad taste in my mouth. It wasn't cheap to get in and there's no sign of the money being spent on the welfare of the animals, my advice for anyone planning to visit - don't!
So that's me pretty much up to date. Im going on a trip tomorrow to the Erewan falls and a few other places culminating in a ride on a train over the famous bridge here, hope its good. I've also decided that i'll probably visit Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam for a month of my time here. Everyone you speak to says its well worth the time and so i think i may as well, it'll still give me a month on the beaches after Christmas.
Hope you are all well and managing to get by without me, you poor things it must be hellish for you. Oh and by the way did i mention that Tiam my masseuse, lovely boy, thought i was 25? X
