Hiya everyone,
We had the most amazing three days ever! Kanchanaburi has been an unforgettable experience. On our first day we started off by heading to a world war II war cemetary and museum and the Bridge over the River Kuah. The museum was very interesting, it gave the history of the Death Railway and the brutal treatment the prisoners of war and civilians had to endure buiding it. The cemetery is where the 12,000 people out of 150,000 people who died to build this railway are buried. Later that day we got to ride a train along the Death Railway, the views were spectacular but there was something a bit eerie about knowing how many people died while forced to build it, definitely an interesting experience though. After the railway we visited a beautiful waterfall where we got to splash around (in our clothes so we got soaked), here we trecked to a cave where we found inside alters of worship to Buddah, the sunlight came through a hole in the roof and hit exactly the spot where the main alter stood, it was spectacular. That night we stayed in a floating house in an elephant camp. We had
dinner and drinks with the other travellers there and exchanged some interesting tales, they were a reall nice bunch of people.
The next day we woke up at 7 in the morning and were taken out to 2 waiting elephants. We hopped on their necks and they took us down to the river. To get there we had to get down a steep, slippery river bank and we were thinking the elephants are never going to be able to get down this, but we were proved wrong, they're actually very agile and did it with ease (I have to admit I was more than a little scared though!). We took the elephants into the river and washed them, they kept dipping us under water and blowing water at us! It was a surreal morning but we've agreed it was the highlight of our trip so far. We even felt like we had built a close bond with the elephants until the very end when Liam fell off his! His elephant decided to let him off in the wrong area and Liam was more thrown off than escorted like I was! Very funny to watch though! After lunch we went bamboo
The beautiful waterfall
Us at the waterfall (still dry!) rafting down the river, it was very relaxing and we had a beautiful view of the river and mountains. Our next stop was the Tiger Temple. It's a temple where monks have tigers roaming around, they're tame because the monks have reared them. We got to take pictures with the tigers and even rub them! We saw baby cubs that were only born 2 months ago, very cute. We travelled to Bangkok for the night to get another early night to prepare for the next day!
First stop was the floating market, we travelled in a paddle boat around to the stalls, in one stall we stopped to get pictures taken with 2 huge snakes! Definitely the most unusual market we've been to so far! We went to a suger factory and a handicraft factory, the handicraft factory had fabulous hand carved furniture. After lunch in a floating restaurant we went to a crocodile farm where we saw crocodile wrestling and a very funny elephant show, they even played soccer! After our 3 day action packed, nature filled tour we headed back to the smog and lights of Bangkok, booo! On to Vietnam next though, can't wait.
Take care,
Laura at the waterfall
Soaked because I ran under it! Talk soon,
