When travelling to countries where you don’t speak the local language, silly events often happen that can put a smile on your face. Take for example this experience. Bev decided this year to take some Thai language classes. She found out that in the Thai language, questions and responses as kept as short as possible. No need to speak in sentences when one word will suffice. Well that doesn’t sit well with Bev, as she has a tendency to talk; to elaborate upon things. For breakfast we usually have eggs, plain pancakes, muesli and yogurt, along with a fruit plate of bananas, pineapple and watermelon. One morning, Bev decided she wanted banana crepe pancakes, instead of the plain pancakes. In great detail she explained in English, to our Thai waiter, what she wanted for breakfast. Satisfied ... read more

Our Air Asia tickets from Bangkok, to the island of Koh Phangan in Southern Thailand included a two hour bus transport from Nakon Si Thammarat airport to Donsak Pier, where we would board a ferry for the three hour transit to our island destination. Its a pretty sweet service that Air Asia offers. However, in the aftermath of tropical storm Pebuk, the ferries were still not running the day prior to our departure, although we were told by Air Asia that they believed they would be running the next day. We decided to risk it, the worst case scenario being that we would be spending the night somewhere near the ferry terminal if the ferries weren’t running. We wanted to get to KP and begin our yoga studies, not put in another day of waiting in ... read more

It was a forty hour journey to get from our home in Regina, central Canada, to our first overseas destination in Bangkok, Thailand. The first fifteen hours involved a two hour flight to Vancouver airport on New Year’s Day, followed by a dozen hours waiting for our after midnight flight to Bangkok, via Taipei. All connections went well, but the additional twelve hours of waiting around the airport was a gruelling time extension to an already long flight plan. However, when we finally arrived Bangkok mid-afternoon two days later it was only a matter of minutes before we fell asleep and remained in that state for the next eighteen hours, ready to commence a new day in a new country relatively fresh and revived. Jet lag was not noticeable. It is always a delight to start ... read more

There is nothing much to tell about Khanom or show what I have not told or shown on my recent trip to Khanom. On the first day (monday) I assembled my bike and was really happy that it worked well. I visited my Khanom friends and they were all really happy to see me. I was invited for lunch and dinner and really happy to be here. It was a really happy day. :D Today I also bought a table and finally established my office. What was a nightmare though, is what happened to my bicycle. I had a flat tire the very first day (I had only 2 in 3 months last time). I repaired that and had another flat tire only 2 days later. I repaired that too and started to work on my ... read more

(scroll down for all images) Hi everybody. It took me a while but as usual I need time to get everything settled until I have some minutes to share whatever happened. And it takes some more time until something happens at all :-) So here is my trip to where I am now. Saturday: Benno was so kind to give me ride to the airport because the S-Bahn was on strike and it would have been unpredictable to take it. I went straight to the check-in of Emirates where I saw people unpacking things out of their suitcases because they were too heavy. I got a little bit afraid about the 3kg excess luggage I had but I was lucky because the bike case did not fit onto his scale entirely and so it weighed about ... read more

The tranquility of url=http://www.travelfish.org/location/thailand/southern_thailand/nakhon_si_thammarat/nakhon_si_thammaratNakhon Si Thammarat hits you the moment you step off the plane and onto the runway. The mighty peak of Khao Luang (namesake of the national park) looms in the distance overlooking all and sundry in a kind of serene benevolence from a height of over 1,800 meters. Birds large and small chatter in the bushes on the side of the runway, and they are the only sound one hears aside from fellow passengers talking on their phones. Speaking of those passengers, I counted just two other farang on the flight down. My plan was to hop in a taxi and go straight to the village of Ban Khiriwong in the foothills of Khao Luang National Park . In hindsight it would have been more fun to take a songthaew for 25 ... read more

MORE PROOF OF TRAVEL (Pics) at the bottom Dear followers, dear friends, dearest, beloved family. This letter goes to those who encourage, promote and finally sustain my epic voyage, however encountered my leave with grief and mourning, who feared for my life when I had to find my way through the dark shadows of the ogress Bangkok. It goes to those whose hearts were fulfilled with relief when I overcame my adventure with the black road with both – sane mind and sane body. But it also goes to those, who are my worst enemies – the nine lords of the false things: (1) Lord of the envy – may your false protestations and your identities be revealed before I reach my destination, for you are not one but many. (2) Lord of responsibility – already ... read more
