Mango-sticky rice
I forgot to add the picture to the last blog. I just scorched my mouth. Not on hot, but on spice. I ate papaya salad again, and this time I asked for it to be Thai-style. I'll let you know how my digestive system likes that choice tomorrow.
I got back from my trip to Krabi last night around 9ish. The flight only took about an hour, but I was dog tired and almost slept the whole way! It was an exhausting but truly wonderful vacation. Thats not me being annoyingly positive, it really was
wonderful.
We left Victory Monument around 5:15 on Thursday night on the #515 city bus. It took us 45 minutes to get about 3 miles. The traffic was
that awful, but once we got on the expressway to the bus terminal, we made pretty good time and we arrived about a 1/2 hour before our night bus boarded. We had a bite to eat and got a donut from Mr. Donut. No, Andrew wasn't there. Its just the name of a restaurant-bakery they have here😊 Also, I had a honey glazed, if you were wondering, and it was delightful. We found platform nine and three-quarters without trouble and waited for our bus to pull up. BAHAHAHHA
FRESH FRUIT
So...I bought a juicer and made my own orange juice. I also am addicted to guavas and everyone thinks I'm crazy. Sure: they have zero taste. Maybe thats why I like them. They're bland compared to Thai food. Right now I can't recall what the black fruit is but it was like a grape texture inside and there were ants crawling around under the cap. Needless to say...I've sworn off those. just kidding. It was actually platform 69, I'm just in a HP mood. I was going to write: "before our
Knight bus boarded," but I thought that would be going to far. There are probably copyright laws on those terms...and I'm sure you know them.
We were shocked when our double decker bus complete with an anti-durian symbol displayed on the side arrived; it was pimped out with colored lighting, red seats, and flourescent pink blankets. I think Sarah and I got the handicap seats because we had a humungous amount of extra leg room. Kyle was jealous at this--he's really tall. He almost hits his head on awnings and hanging signs when we walk to work. Its hard to be a tall white guy in Thailand, I guess. Some people stopped him in Krabi to take a picture with him. A Punjabi man close by said Kyle is like an elephant in India. I said that if that were the case, Kyle would have charged 1000 rupees per picture.
Anyways, back to the story: we quite happy that we had chosen to take the bus. So inexpensive, so luxurious, nice snack pack....
and our happiness lasted about 5 minutes.
Tukata (May 28)
This is my grad student, Tukata. We're working on her project to learn more about acinetobacter's antibiotic resistence gene. It broke down in the middle of the highway near the bus station. After about an hour of trying to rev the machine back to life, another bus came to pick us up. It smelled like pee and had no leg room anywhere. Sarah and I took a sad picture just to remember our disappointment. We were in for a long bus ride...
But actually we weren't. A half hour later we stopped again. There was an announcement in Thai and since we don't understand that language, we just followed suit of the other passengers and got off the bus. Bus #3 was similar to Bus#1, but with a regular amount of leg room and only a pee-smelling bathroom. We were trying to settle down/read/relax, when the TVs turned on and the speakers blared the audio for a Chinese movie dubbed in Thai. They didn't have access to your movie collection, apparently. Wish I could have loaned them
Goldmember. My iPod was on full blast and I could still hear the movie. I guess it wasn't time to go to bed yet.
Around midnight, we stopped for some really runny steamed rice and cold vegetable dishes at a truckstop. It

Tukata got us tickets to the "fun park" last weekend. It was a carnival and I got sick on the first ride...naturally. hahha was much like the Flying J minus the X-rated magazines and slot machines. When we returned to the bus, they turned out all the aisle lights and disconnected the reading lights. I guess you have to play by the rules on Thai buses: "Go to bed now" was the implied direction. I woke up from a fitful night's sleep around 6:30 on Friday, and looked out the window to soak in the quiet countryside. Much too soon, however, REALLY LOUD Thai garbling music started playing from the speakers. So much for quiet; as the Thai say: DUUUUUN--"Wake up!"
We arrived at the Krabi bus station in the rain, paid 3 baat to use a shower-drain style bathroom guarded by 6 sleeping dogs covered in flees, and jumped in a shuttle van for Na-Thai Resort. I am not sarcastic when I say: I am so glad that I took the bus. So ends part one of my vacation.
Until we meet again,
Amy
