We finally have our beach-hunting skills honed to perfection! On both Ko Samui and later on Ko Pha Ngan, we found delightful areas with at least a little village atmosphere squeezed in amongst the tourism. While we were in Mae Nam (Samui) Chinese New Year was celebrated amid gongs and firecrakers louder than cannons. Chalok Lom on Pha Ngan was a much more serene fishing village, where the catches of squid were laid out on the beach to bake in the sun alongside the tourists.
