25th March
G'day, after leaving Kata, me Bully and Will made our way to the island of Ko Phi Phi. Before our boat from Kata docked in Ko Phi Phi pier you could tell how scenic the island was, cue Japanese tourists on the boat mimicking Titanic-esque poses at the front of the boat with glimpses of the island in the background of their photos-"Don't let go Jack""Do You trust me?" "I'm the king of the world" and all that jazz. It was actually around this neck of the woods where Leonardo Di Caprio filmed another one of his famous films, "The Beach" (Every bookshop you walk in is selling the book, every DVD shop has the DVD and every tour operator on the Island is trying to cash in on the Hollywood blockbuster) nb. It wasn't on Phi Phi itself where it was filmed but on a nearby island reachable by boat.
We'd heard that it was meant to be really expensive here but we managed to find a room for less than 4 quid each- Brucey bonus! After settling down we explored the beach area, huge cliffs dominated one side of the island and were quite a sight

The cliffs surround most of the island to behold. Ko Phi Phi was devestated by the Tsunami, but there seemed little hint of this apart from the numerous signs directing people to "Tsunami evacuation route(s)" and a memorial garden.
At night the heavens opened, it seems that it is getting close to rainy season!! The rain was horrific but we needed to reach a bar in time for Liverpool v Everton, we got there just in time-Phew! Bully pointed out that we would have to have a night off the cheapest beer which we usually go for, Chang beer (they sponsor Everton, and we didn't want to be jinxing the result!) Unfortunately they didn't have any Carlsberg, so we were on the more classy Thai beer, Singha.
What a game! I thought we were done for when Stevie G saw red, but alls well that ends well eh. We ended up in a bar called "Rolling Stoned", which is a rock music place which has live music provided by a Thai band with 80s Bon Jovi hair- they were roaring out loads of classics all night, Creep by Radiohead, Sweet Child of Mine by G&R (Cheeky Dan would've well been giving it some beans if
Maya Bay
Aka THE BEACH he was there!) After rocking out i headed to bed, only to find that we had only two matresses not 3! I was seething but as it was nearing 1am nothing could be done, it wa a case of "three in the bed and the litle one said" that night!

Today was pretty dull gull, I had a day bumming around the beach and reading a book- I seem to be reading loads on this trip, but there's not much else to do on a lazy beach except listen to music and get burnt (Both of which i am doing with aplomb aswell!). It bucketed down again at night! We decided to book ourselves on a boat tour for tommorow where we would do some snorkelling and visit "The Beach"
27th March
Its raining its pouring and cocknose is snoring! We woke up to the clattering of rain on our tin roof and the chirpings of this bird/insect that seems to reside just outside our room- It has been heard but never seen! Fortunately the rain stopped and the sun came out just as we boarded our boat that was touring some nearby islands.
The boat was relatively big, about 30 people on board, and had a diving board off the top deck- I managed to do some Top Bombing, ever the showman, swallowing loads of sea salt in the process.
Our first stop was Maya Bay, aka "The Beach". It looked alright but no different to the countless other bays nearby- We had a bit of a snorkel and a jump and then moved on. Throughout the day we had about 4 snorkel stops and were shown various sites: Viking Cave, Bamboo beach and Monkey beach (Where, by the way, we never spotted one monkey). The areas where we snorkeled were all around beautiful coral where we could see various fish of different colours- After the snorkeling we done in Kata i was beginning to consider myself a relative expert and managed to "master" the art of swimming underwater without swallowing loads of saltwater through my snorkel (After some initial teething problems!)
It was a bakng hot day and despite putting on loads of suncream and wearing a t-shirt i still got burnt. Will and Bull were the same although the bit of Mediteranean in Bull, (OOh as an actor said
to a bishop!) meant he was more tanned than burnt if your gonna be pedantic about things. The night time was pretty lazy and we had an early night, a night i might add that was interrupted at various points to readjust my sunburnt body towards the fan- Damn you infernal sun!!
Tommorow we're heading back to mainland Thailand to Krabi
yours faithfully, Mike
